Mustang Basketball: Malta set to avenge loss to Glasgow on Friday

The Malta Mustangs look to be back on track after back to back wins in the District.

The team is currently riding a three game winning streak after defeating Plentywood and Harlem last weekend. Their record now stands at 5-5 on the season.

With that being said, Malta will have tough task ahead of them as they take on Glasgow in Malta on Friday.

Glasgow (10-0) is currently ranked fourth in Montana B basketball by Maxpreps.com

Malta had Glasgow on their heels in their match up in Glasgow in late December, and lost 65-60.

The team is hoping for a different outcome this time around.

"We have to be more patient on offense," Senior forward Jeremy Costin told the PCN. "We gotta work harder on defense. Box out and get those boards."

Glasgow is relying less on their perimeter shots this year after losing their sharp-shooter Lane Herbert to graduation.

"This year they are trying to fast break a lot more," Costin said.

In their 42-15 victory over the Plentywood Wildcats, Malta showed great defensive depth, with every player seeing time on the court.

Though the team has no true post, they held Plentywood senior Justin Marsh to zero points in the victory.

The team was led by Allen Williamson, who scored nine points in the win.

Tyson Carney scored seven points.

Jase Galt and Ostin Welch had six points a piece in the win.

Jeremy Costin and Devon Raybon scored four points a piece.

Nate Costin scored three points.

Jayce Bishop added two points and Blake Sjostrom scored one point.

"It's really important (to get the younger players time) because we need them to come off the bench if we get in foul trouble or need a break."

Though offensive attribution struggled, the team was 82 percent (9 for 11) at the free throw line, which will bode well for the team in tournament play.

The game served as a win for the team's defense, but in order for the team to make it deep into the post-season it is important that the offense shows up.

Costin believes that the key to having a defense as good as Malta's involves a little more hustle than most.

"Just getting our rotations and sprinting at them," Costin said. "If we're not sprinting then we're going to get beat somewhere and give up and easy shot."

Costin has been to state every year he's played with Malta, so he knows what it will take.

"Just a lot of effort and hard-work and teamwork," Jeremy
