Class C Girls Basketball: Lady Panthers 6-1 after destroying Dodson and Frazer

The showdown between the Dodson Lady Coyotes and Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers wasn't much of a show, as the Lady Panthers destroyed the Lady Coyotes 64-19, in Dodson's first game of the season.

It was rough to watch as the opening quarter ended 24-0.

The rest of the game didn't get much better as the Lady Panthers gave up ten in the next quarter but still scored 18 more before the half, making the score 42-10.

Dodson wouldn't even double their score at the end of the game.

Lady Panther Tatum Moore led the onslaught, scoring 15 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter.

Larimie Scheffelmear had the team led with 16 points.

Keira Simonson and Kourtney Simonson scored ten points each.

"We were very intense and outgoing," Keira Simonson told the PCN.

Kayleigh Cummings scored seven including a three pointer heard throughout Phillips County in the third quarter. The trey the first in her young high school career.

After the shot, the crowd and Lady Panther bench erupted.

"I was really excited," second year player Kayleigh Cummings said.

She played for the team as an eighth grader last year, but knows this year she will get called to play more often.

"I'm way more confident this year than last year," Cummings said.

To improve as a team Keira, believes her team must come out strong on offense and be intense on defense.

"On all aspects of the floor whether we're pressing or not," she said.

Both Keira and Kayleigh are huge fans of the greatest basketball player of all time. Not Lebron or Kobe Bryant, but Michael Jordan.

Both wear black Jordan headbands to show how close they are as friends and basketball players.

"It was our plan for the year," Keira said.

"It's our trademark," Kayleigh added.

Karly Santillan added four points and Mickayla Johnson put up two points.

For it being their first game of the season, facing the Lady Panthers was a pretty tall order and would've been for most Class B and C schools.

It doesn't matter who they face, District wins are very important to the Lady Panthers because, "Every game counts," Kayleigh said.

"Tonight was our first and it was a good start," Keira added.

The Dodson Lady Panthers were led by Janessa Henry, who scored eight points. She was perfect from the free throw line, going six for six.

Jacina Doney scored five points.

Shontelle Talks Different scored four points, two of which came from free throws. She was two for two.

Jenessa Talks Different added two points.

LADY COYOTES

The Lady Coyotes had a much better outing against the Scobey Spartans, however they dropped the game, 75-44.

Dodson was led by Janessa Henry who scored 20 points.

Jenessa Talks Different found her stride scoring 17 points.

Shontelle Talks different had seven in the loss.

The team will have only practices during Christmas break but then will take on the Turner Tornadoes in Turner on Friday, January 2. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 P.M.

They will then take on the Nashua Lady Porcupines in Dodson on Saturday, January 3.

LADY PANTHERS

The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers had a another statement win last Saturday, defeating the Frazer Bearcubs 79-37.

The team was led by Kourtney Simonson a co-captain of the team, who had a stellar game, going 11 for 11 from behind the free throw line and scoring 25 points total. Seventeen of the points came in the first half.

Tatum Moore had 19 points in the win, 11 of which came in the first quarter.

Co-captain Keira Simonson scored 13.

Larimie Scheffelmear had eight points.

Jada Sudbrack added four points.

Both Kayla Howard and Casity Boucher had three points a piece.

Kaycee Howard and Kayleigh Cummings also two baskets.

Before the game, the PCN asked Keira Simonson what the team needed to do to defeat Frazer.

"We have to keep our intensity up, make sure we stay on our toes for defense and work the offense," Keira Simonson said.

The team has chalked up two district wins last weekend right before Christmas break and are now 6-1.

During the break the team will practice for a few days to try and stay in game shape.

"We get a break here and there that Coach Erickson lets us have off, but then we still go hard in practice," Kayleigh said. "We have to make the best of it so we don't come out flat when we come back," Keira said.

When asked if they thought they would be ready for their next game after break, both confidently answered "yes."
