Lady Coyotes aim to make it far into playoffs

The Dodson Lady Coyotes came on strong last season, finishing third in 3-C basketball and earning a berth in the divisional playoffs.

"It was our first divisional appearance in ten years, so we were pretty proud of that," said second year Lady Coyotes Head Coach Brandy Hunter.

The team lost out in divisionals and many returning athletes still have the taste of defeat in their mouths, but they plan on improving this season.

"We did talk about last season and how we weren't mentally prepared enough to go into divisionals and play as well as we should have," Coach Hunter said. "We kind of defeated ourselves more than anything."

The team will have a new look after losing Raven Bear to graduation and Jessica Parker to Harlem.

"We talked about how we're not going to let that affect us as a team," Coach Hunter said.

The team boasts a lot of talent and should still be able to compete this year.

The team has four seniors, including Wozek Chandler who is improving.

"Wozek is one of those kids who has a lot of ability and a lot of talent, but she is kind of timid," said Coach Hunter. "She is a very good defensive player. She has a great shot at the top of the key."

Coach Hunter went on to say that the improvements Chandler has made are "astronomical."

"If you ask her to do something she will go do it," Coach Hunter continued. "She'll give you everything she has."

Senior Jenessa Talks Different put on quite a show behind the arc last season, sinking shots nearly at will.

She is in her second year in the Dodson program since transferring from Malta last season, and should continue to thrive as a leader for the Lady Coyotes.

"She had a knee injury last season that affected her entire season, but this year she's healthy," Coach Hunter said. "She's an all-around great athlete and I just can't say enough about her. She loves the game of ball, she is a very consistent three point shooter, can shoot inside, sink free throws, does whatever I ask her to do, is very knowledgeable about the game of basketball, sees things a lot of kids don't see and is able to make plays."

It helps that Talks Different is also a very humble and unselfish player.

Senior Janessa Henry was a consistently strong competitor.

"She's a hustler she will give you 110 percent every day," Coach Hunter said. "She's very excited for the season to start. She can shoot outside and inside."

She also noted that Janessa is a good team leader, who is encouraging to her teammates and gives all that she has on the court.

Senior Jacina Doney is brand new to the team. She is a transfer student from Harlem.

She fared well for the Dodson-Whitewater Harriers during cross country and should have quite the presence in the paint.

"She's a hustler who is learning our offense and blending in well with the team, so I think the team dynamics will be good again," said Coach Hunter. "She's going to be an asset on post and she's a strong player not afraid to get that body contact."

Though Doney is new to the program, Coach Hunter stressed that the team has taken her in and she fits in perfect.

"I'm excited to see what she brings to our team," Coach Hunter continued.

Shontelle Talks Different is only an eighth grader, but is one player that the team is excited about .

"She's a solid athlete. She's only an eighth grader but she has got basketball smarts," Coach Hunter said.

Returning players like sophomore Shawnee Kill Eagle and freshmen Donna Dale, are focused and are continually improving in practice.

The team also welcomes freshman Kyla Racine and eighth grader Shania Kill Eagle.

The team will adapt their offense to how their bigs are playing, but for the most part they will run a motion offense like they ran last year.

"I think everyone on the hi-line runs it, but it's an effective offense," Coach Hunter said.

Their defense will depend on who they play.
