Headline: John B. Cowan Arrested
After searching Montana and the states on the coast more than two months for John B. Cowan, embezzling postmaster at the station of Cowan, sixteen miles north of Malta, Post Office Inspector A.C. Graff today ran his man to earth in the county jail here, where he is held on a forgery charge. Cowan confessed to this afternoon to the inspector. He was indicted in Butte last week.
(Cowan) was a good official with a high rating in the office…he got into debt and drew on the funds from the post office. Realizing he would be unable to make good the shortage, he took money order blank forms and the money order stamp and fled. After his departure about $3,500 worth of money orders showed up, among them being a number made out to Malta residents to whom his father was indebted.

News and Notes: Dodson
According to Post Master Lars Kodalen, more people are enjoying the benefits of having post office boxes of their own than at any time in the history of the post office in Dodson. The lobby is left open until after six o’clock and farmers arriving in town late can get their mail, as well as workers getting home after hours.
Personals: Raymond Veseth, who has been in Malta the past few weeks visiting his brother, Carl Veseth, and family, left Tuesday morning for Redding, California where he will be employed in a theatre there owned by Carl Veseth and operated by Leslie Pancake, a former Malta resident.
Editor’s Note: There are no editions of the Phillips County News for November, 1964 at the Phillips County Museum. If you have any copies of those papers, the museum would love to add them to their archives. Editor’s Note:

The proposed increase is the second of a three three-phase plan in which the sewer rate will ultimately be raised to approximately $32 a month. That’s the amount mandated by federal regulations if the city is to qualify for a low interest loan and grant from Rural Development in order to fund improvements.
Headline: City Christmas Tree on its way
Yes, Virginia, Malta will have an official city Christmas tree this year. The tree, according to City Works Director John Demarais, has been donated by Malta resident Ron Sunford.
The city crew had to call local Northwestern power crews to deal with a power line before the tree could be cut down.
Demarais said the tree should be erected east of Front Street Park later this week.
