Headline: A good yield

Victor Swenson, southeast of Malta, brought to this office this week a sample of Marquis wheat raised on his farm this season. Mr. Swenson is loud in his praises of this brand of wheat and states that the yield per acre was 20 ½ bushels from a sowing of one-half bushels to the acre and a bushel of this wheat weighed 62 pounds.

Additional Locals: Malta weathered the storm of Halloween very favorably and the youngsters did little or no damage, and it is safe to say they feel just as good as if they had carried all the gates in town away, and chances are the parents feel a lot better financially.

Headline: Malta Captures District Title from Big Sandy

By trimming a fighting Big Sandy team 27 to 6 last Saturday, the Malta Mustangs won their first district title in many years, having previously rolled over Chinook 18 to 6 and Fort Benton 8 to 6 to remain undefeated in district competition.

The fist half of the game Saturday was played in a howling blizzard that kept both teams on the defense. The score at halftime was Malta 7, Big Sandy 6. The second half the weather cleared but the field was wet, making it difficult to run anything but power plays and short passes.

Coach Hollister states that a great deal of work is needed on blocking and defense before the championship game next Saturday.

Editor's Note: There are no editions of the Phillips County News for November, 1964 at the Phillips County Museum. If you have any copies of those papers, the museum would love to add them to their archives.

Headline: Election is ho, hum affair

Running unopposed in Malta City election were incumbents Delmar Demarais, alderman Ward I, Byron Ereaux, alderman Ward II, and Garry Adams, for Mayor. No one was registered as a write-in candidate so write-ins didn't count.

In Saco, two city council seats were vacated and in Dodson the mayor and two city council positions were open and no one registered to fill any of those positions. In those cases, write-in votes will be counted according to City Clerk and Recorder Ingelef Schwartz. If there are no write-ins, then probably the city council would make appointments, she said.

Headline: Souper Sunday Success

The traditional St. Mary's Parish Harvest Dinner – turkey and the trimmings – took a casual turn this year as the men replaced the women in the kitchen and prepared seven varieties of soup instead of turkey.

Visitors were treated to barley, tomato, clam chowder, turkey, and noodle, chicken and dumpling and cream of potato soups – all prepared by the members of the Knights of Columbus Council 2124 – accompanied by an equally wide variety of pies, French bread and garlic toast.

Headline: New Face is news at the PC News

The Phillips County News office is always brimming with news. This week we had bad news and good news.

The bad news is we're losing our ad sales/ office person, Lesley Robinson, who is going on to better things as the newly elected member of the Phillips County Board of Commissioners.

The Good news?

Jennifer "Jenny" Pearson is taking Lesley's place and is already fitting into life as we know it at the PCN.
