One Nation, Under God
The Malta M-ettes C-Squad Volleyball team made short work of the visiting team from Wolf Point on Wednesday afternoon, 25-12, 25-20 and 15-11 and did so, according to at least one M-ette, by playing as a team.
"I think we played really well together and talked a lot," said freshman middle hitter Maria Brown. "If we play like that all the time I think we can win a lot of games."
In the first match, the M-ettes found themselves trailing 4-2 early on, but timely serves from Grace Doucette – which included three aces – led Malta to a 7-4 lead and the team never looked back in the match. Three successful serves from Ella Schye were followed by a kill from Julia Meisdalen and gave the home team the 24-12 lead before Billie Orahood knocked down the match-winning serve.
Game two didn't start well for the M-ettes and Malta trailed 5-0 early on. Sam Mitchell scored the first point of the match for Malta with a kill and later in the match had an ace serve to knot the contest at 10. Kills by Brown and Schye still later in the match gave the M-ettes a 17-16 lead, Hope Lawless notched two ace serves to push the lead to 21-17 Meisdalen hit an ace serve to give Malta the 25-20 win.
Game three – a first to 15-tilt – saw Lawless reel off five consecutive serves for a 6-1 lead and when Wolf Point tied the game at 9, Brown hit two scoring serves to push the score to 11-9. Schye served her team to four straight points – the last coming from an ace – to push the M-ettes to a 15-11 win in the set and a 3-0 win in the match.
Bella Mackey chimed in with eight successful serves – as well as third aces – during the three game, Alanis Doney chipped in with a dig, as did Alex Santillan, and Karley Santillan recorded one serve-receive in the well-rounded win.
"Since we lost to Saco yesterday, it was nice to come out here and win today," said Brown. "Sam Mitchell played really well and I would like to say 'good job' to all my teammates."
