One Nation, Under God
The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire had a good week, picking up two district wins against quality teams against Lustre last Thursday and Nashua.
The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire survived a clash against the Malta M-ettes JV team last Monday. Facing injury and fatigue, the team won the game in four sets. The scores were 25-18, 25-21, 17-25 and 26-24.
Malta's Gym was loud and seemed pretty intimidating even after Saco-Hinsdale won the first two sets.
As Malta's JV fought hard to force a fifth game, Saco-Hinsdale, did what they had to do to close the game, including two consecutive kills by Wildfire Outside hitter Alana Malmend.
"It's amazing, there are no words that can describe that," Malmend said minutes after her game winning kill. "It just feels so good."
Last year Malmend barely got any time playing, due to the fact that the team had powerhouse hitters like Whitney Molina, Bethany Lacock, Shyla Gairrett and Chadaya Christiansen.
A sophomore, Alana knows that in order for her young team to improve, they have to stay positive.
"We can't just shut down," Malmend said. "We have to encourage each other. If someone misses a hit, we have to be like 'you got it next time." We are working on that."
Encouragement from Malmend has come in a few forms, especially at Saco High School where she is helping the school put a stop to a very important issue.
That issue is bullying.
She gave a presentation on the subject to students at Saco, sharing her past experiences with bullying.
"I felt like I needed to let them know," she said. "I told my story because I went through a lot."
She figured by telling her story, maybe the students would listen and change their ways towards one another.
"Ever since that presentation, our school has been positive and there have been no negative comments," Malmend said. "Everyone's changed because of one person and I think that's what they needed."
Malmend led the team in kills in Monday's game with 12.
Capdeville led in aces, with seven. She also led in digs, with nine.
Beil led in assists, with 16.
The Wildfire needs a break more than many other teams, due to the fact that a few players are on the mend.
"We have a big break, which is not always good, but hopefully we can get rested up," Beil said. "We have a lot of sick girls on our team right now. Scobey's going to be a
