One Nation, Under God

Eyes bigger than my stomach

Sometimes my eyes are bigger than my stomach.

Thanksgiving is in my top three of holidays. Any day that features family, football and food is A-OK in my book (throw in a couple of brewskies and away we go.) If there is one thing about this holiday that I could live without, it is the overeating I do on the day. My eyes are often bigger than my stomach and that third helping of whipped spuds and turkey gravy often leaves me writhing in pain as I attempt to pop the top button of my pants.

I only bring up the eyes vs. stomach metaphor because it applies to a feat that I was recently trying to pull off. With the elections right around the corner in November, I thought it would be keen to hold a public debate for the public to attend in which each of the candidates in our county would speak and ask for your votes. The more I looked into hosting the event, the faster that I realized that for an event like this to happen I would have needed to start planning in about early September instead of late October. Just like I do on Turkey Day, I had bit off more than I could chew with this debate idea.

Not to fear, the candidates will all get equal time (or space) in this newspaper as over the next three weeks the pages of the PCN will be covered with statements written by the candidates, whether they are running unopposed or not. I will not, however, be using this column to endorse any candidates in any of the races as I attempt to remain as impartial as possible. I have thoughts about who and what I will cast my votes for, but that is between God and myself and not for the pages of this community newspaper.

In the future, I will act in a timelier manner and I will be hosting candidate forums that will be open to the public (and maybe I can get KMMR on board to broadcast them.) I am still finding my feet in the stirrups of the PCN and the next time elections roll around I’ll be ready to go. I hope you will attend.

If you have an issue or candidate that you feel passionately about, I encourage writing a letter to the editor and sounding off. I don’t, however, blame you if you don’t. This is a small community and when discussing politics it is easy to share a view you believe in wholeheartedly but at the same time anger half of your friends.

Good luck to all the candidates, thanks for reading and aloha.
