Wildfire Volleyball: Team takes second at the Scobey Invitational after losing to Scobey in 'ship

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire had a week that started off rough, with two losses.

One game was a thriller against Poplar last Thursday, that went to five games. The scores were (25-13, 25-21, 20-25, 16-25 and 18-16.)

The game featured great serving from both teams,

The Wildfire started off slow but thanks to some quality hitting from their frontline.

Freshman Mickalya Johnson led the team with 10 kills.

Fellow freshman Jada Sudbrack served fireballs, picking up a team high ten aces.

Setter Delaney Beil and Libero Payton Chopper both had eight digs.

Beil also had 23 assists.

After the game the PCN caught up with Sudbrack and Johnson to talk about the game and hitting in particular.

"I think once you get a good hit , it really hypes up everybody, they all get excited and give you high fives and they are in a great mood," said Sudbrack. "We just go crazy!"

Though the team was without it's main captain, Courtney Capdeville, the young team did well, as summed up by Mickayla Johnson.

"I think we did really good for not having one of our main players (Capdeville)," Johnson said. "We really brought up the intensity. We had some good hits and good passes. I think we did a very good job."

Sudbrack believes that to improve as a team the team needs to work on passing and letting mistakes go.

"We get stuck on one thing a lot, especially me," she said. "We just need to be more positive as a team."

Johnson shared her thoughts on facing a Class B team.

"It is pretty intimidating, especially considering we are such a young team," Johnson said. "But it's also a really good experience for us to play against these harder teams, it's just going to make us better."

Their next game, the next day was a pretty tall order, going up against Scobey.

It was a game that they ultimately lost in three (13-25, 14-25 and 17-25).

They saw Scobey again in the championship round of the Scobey Invitational the next day and lost in two. The scores were 20-25 and 25-22.

The team was led by Sudbrack who had team highs in aces with four of six and kills, with six of 14.

Capdeville led in blocks with two.

Chopper had 11 digs out of 32 team digs.

Hanna Whitaker led in assists, racking up four of 10.

The team's next action will take place tomorrow in Hinsdale , as they take on the Lustre Christian Lions at 6:00 p.m.

They will see Nashua on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Malta's JV on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
