One Nation, Under God
I dislike America’s deep infatuation with social media.
You might call me bitter because I remember there was a time that only college students were allowed into Facebook.
Then it got kind of lame when high school kids were let in. Then it got super lame when everyone and there mom was updating their statuses.
The original intent of the site was great but today it is a Mecca for airing dirty laundry, talking about politics and pushing agendas that not even ten years ago was considered immoral and wrong.
When I moved home and saw that my parents used it more than me, I was even more off put.
Don’t get me wrong Facebook is awesome for keeping in touch with everyone, but it seems things were more personal when you made that phone call or drove to hang out with your friends rather than hide behind the keyboard.
One perk is that if Facebook didn’t exist I wouldn’t have reconnected with a friend, who later became my wife.
Also I like hearing responses from people about how handsome our son is.
But one thing that really turns me off about social media is the fact people can maliciously attack and “troll” other users.
Last year, a few athletes from our area attempted to assassinate each others’ character. I had to write about it, which was in fact my first or second column writing.
I just wanted to remind everyone out there, especially in Phillips County that these kids playing football, volleyball and running in cross country are giving their all out there and should be respected, praised and not attacked nor discouraged.
If a kid misses a play, please don’t disrespect them.
Instead encourage them, because your negativity sucks and that kid deserves better than to get bashed for something out of their control.
In other words don’t be a nag. You’re embarrassing your kid and yourself.
I’m just saying if my boy grows up and wants to play ball, I would hope that I wouldn’t come off as a “soccer mom.” I would hope I would be more “man” than that.
An occasional grunt or moan might suffice, but treat your kid how you would want to be treated, love is definitely better than resentment.
Relax, it’s a game.
When the NFL games are on the tube, yell, jump and scream to your heart’s content... Lord knows I’ve nearly wrecked a computer screen or two watching the Bears.
Onto the next thing.
I jumped out of my coach for joy last weekend when they showed Malta’s very own Tucker Schye run that fumble return back for the Griz.
He may have been in the right place at the right time, but it takes skill to scoop up a ball and take it to the house.
It was even cooler seeing him getting playing time near the end of the game.
One more thing...
I’ve got to say I am proud of our teams because the volleyball teams are killing it and the Mustangs played their hearts out against a really good and established Huntley Project team last weekend.
The passing offense showed just a little of their potential and I’m dying to find out what happens Friday against Roundup.
Please America, for the love of everything good, bring some mosquito spray to the game for your benefit and mine... Wink. Wink...
