Golf a Sport?

What really makes a social gathering, a sport?

The biggest thing up for debate seems to be cheer leading. But I’ve found that there are many topics up for debate.

For instance, it came to my attention that many students don’t think of golf as a sport. Others don’t even see track and field as a sport.

While many people have made valid points for both sides, I believe that both of the aforementioned are indeed sports.

Take cheer leading for example. Many of the choreographed movements require skill.

I can see that because, while being a black male, I don’t dance. I find it flamboyant and I believe with all my heart, men should not move like that.

To this day, I cannot see why America is so mesmerized with Dancing with the Stars.

While I totally do not see the point in dancing, I can understand that many cheerleaders put in ludicrous hours in the gym and in practice to master their craft.

Those girls and dare I say boys, can do moves I couldn’t do in my sleep.

I also understand that there are competitions all over Northern America for cheerleaders.

Golf is another thing. It doesn’t give you the rock’ em sock ’em action, that football does, but I don’t know of a sport that involves more finesse, timing and patience than golf does.

Then of course comes the competition aspect, where players can play for up to millions of dollars at a time.

Which brings me to my next deal, pro athletes earn way too much money.

Why is it that most of the country is in debt, but one athlete can make up to 100 million in five years!?!?!

I’m sweating my school and doctor bills, that will take me well over a decade to pay, while Patrick Peterson hasn’t even cashed his $15 million signing bonus.

I love sports, but I cant be the only person that thinks that’s messed up. It really does show how far we’ve made it as a country...

I know that ALS is a worthy cause, but when I was asked to dump an ice bucket on my head or pay $100, I couldn’t do it.

I would love to be able to shell out money to various charities, but it seems as though I have picked the wrong occupation, because $100 is a lot of money in my world.

As of Monday, the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised $80 Million towards ALS. $80 Million.

Back to the minor sports.

For a little help on trying to decipher whether a minor sport is truly a sport I’ve enlisted the help of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia defines a sport as:

“Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators. Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.”

There you have it, if whatever sport you have in your mind, doesn’t sound legit, think of it in terms of Wikipedia’s definition. Then again, Wikipedia isn’t necessarily a reliable source, is it?
