The carcass results from the 2014 4-H and FFA livestock show at the Phillips County Fair are complete. Carcass results are eligible to be submitted to the Steer of Merit program, sponsored by the Montana Stockgrowers; Symbol of Excellence program, sponsored by the Montana Pork Producers Council; and Montana Certified Lamb program, sponsored by the Montana Wool Growers.
For meeting individual carcass requirements, youth winners and the breeders of their animals receive a certificate from the sponsoring livestock organizations, and 4-H trophies for first (Grand) and second (Reserve) place exhibitors in each species.
There was one steer out of 17 that qualified for Steer of Merit. All steers however received a blue ribbon. The Grand Champion Market Beef Carcass was presented to Markelle Lett. Markelle’s beef breeder was Roland Young. Her trophy sponsor was Independence Bank. The Reserve Champion Carcass was Trace Simonson with the trophy sponsor by John and Ruth Flansaas. Trace’s beef breeder was Matt Simonson.
There were two market lamb that qualified for Montana Certified Lamb. The Grand Champion Market Lamb Carcass belonged to Caleigh Green with her trophy sponsored by Big Flat Electric Co-op. Caleigh’s lamb breeder was Jeanie Green. The Reserve Champion Market Lamb Carcass trophy was awarded to Pierce Mortenson and the trophy sponsor was Doucette Ranch. Pierce’s breeder was Riley Mortenson.
Four youth qualified for the Symbol of Excellence swine carcass awards. The Grand Champion Market Swine Carcass was awarded to Channing Mavencamp with his trophy sponsor being S & L Hauling and Construction LLC. The swine breeder was Stenberg Hogs. The Reserve Champion Market Swine Carcass trophy was awarded to Kennedy Koss and the trophy was sponsored by Malta Dairy Queen Grill and Chill. The swine breeder was also Stenberg Hogs. Other SOE certificate winners were; Reese Sjostrom with the breeder of the Hartland Colony and Dally Niebur with East End Colony as the breeder. Channing Mavencamp is awarded the traveling trophy for the Grand Champion Overall Pork donated by the Mingneau family in memory of Jess and Diane Jones.
