Headline: Council Agrees to three month angle parking trial
Asked to reconsider its earlier vote, the Malta City Council Tuesday night reversed itself and agreed to a roughly 90-day trial period for angle parking on the south side of Front Street between Central Avenue and First Avenue.
Headline: Golf-ball size hail visits some
Howard and Joann Hammond returned to their home northwest of Malta Sunday night to find about a foot of hail stones piled against the house, 15 windows smashed out in their home and two mobile homes and dents in about anything that could be dented.
The windshield of Dale and Sue Marshall’s car (was destroyed) by the force of the hail storm which hit their car on Sunday evening … it was the second time the Marshalls have been hit by heavy hail.
“In 2000 we had a good one,” Marshall said.
Headline: Hospital’s pancake breakfast, yard sale set record
The annual Hospital pancake and yard sale was an overwhelming success as the Hospital Foundation Committee took in a total of $2,641 – the highest total yet – last Saturday.
Considering the rain, it was a tremendous turnout for all concerned.

Headline: Odd, even water days in effect
Temporary water restrictions have been put into effect in Malta, according to city officials.
The water restriction are necessary because of repairs to a pump which supplies water from a city well and the installation of meters on another well. Under the restrictions which will be in effect until further notice, persons living on the east side of Central and those living North of Highway 2 should water only on even numbered days.
Persons living on the west side of Central and those in the Hillcrest area should water only on odd numbered days.
Headline: Fighter pilot gains top rank
First Lieutenant Mark David LaFond, son of Roger and Beverly LaFond, graduated with an exceptionally qualified rating in the General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon on June 9 from the 314th Tactical Fighting Training Squadron at Luke AFB.

Headline: Country Club Members spend day in mountains
The Woman’s Country Club of Loring sponsored the annual club picnic at the Kirkaldie swimming pool in the Little Rocky Mountains. Five members, their families and four guests spent the day swimming, relaxing and visiting and finished the day with a picnic supper at Ruby Gulch.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Gene Cowan, Dixxie, Debbie, Dee and Scott: Mr. and Mrs. Orlo Simser, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Simer, Ross and Julie, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bradley, Mr. and Mrs. John Flansaas, Gloria, Carol, and Michael.

Headline: New Parking adopted for Front Street
At its Tuesday night meeting the Malta City Council amended its traffic ordinance to prohibit, in future, any large trucks from parking on the south side of Front Street. The projection of large truck bodies into the street is deemed a traffic menace and the amendment merely adds Front Street to the present similar ruling on Fifth Avenue. By “Large truck” is meant any truck bigger than a pick-up.
Headline: School building to be accepted Monday Afternoon
Superintendent J.H. Lesselyong of Malta School System said yesterday that the new high school building was now completed and that if would be formally accepted from the contractor on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. At that time PWA officials, school district trustees and architects will make the customary official inspection of the structure and accept it.
News Notes of Phillips County: Dodson: Frank Partridge, deputy Sheriff, was called to Dodson Monday morning to search for vandals who had broken into McLeods store and Tom Cotter’s pool hall, taking a slot machine from the latter and cigarettes from McLeod Store.

Headline: Success assured
Increased interest among farmers of Valley County, coupled with the assurance of enormous yields of grain makes it certain the Valley County Fair this year will be a stupendous success…twenty dollars will go to the man who proves to have grown the best malting barley in Valley County …the best general exhibit of farm stock shown at the Fair in September will be awarded the “Pearless Cup,” a handsome silver cup valued at $50…Mr. Geo. Harley, the well-known stockman of the northbench (sic) has put up $5 , and county attorney J.L. Slattery, $10, to be added to the prize money to the boy who brings in the largest number of gopher tails.
