One Nation, Under God

Seeds and Moquitoes

It’s sunflower seed season, which means I will probably try every variety of sunflower seeds I can get my hand on.

I like them so much, that I’m attempting to grow sunflowers in my front yard, to harvest the seeds.

My sunflowers won’t be on the same scale as David Veseth’s, whose plants typically grow past ten feet tall in August, but I’m hoping for anything, due to the fact I don’t have a green thumb... Technically speaking, it’s brown.

I have been trying to turn my lack of growing skills into something good, because I’ve come to the realization that I don’t need the best looking yard in my rookie season, I just don’t want the worst looking one on “the hill.”

I have been frantically setting sprinklers and fertilizer to help and I must say, the yard is slowly coming together, minus the few sunflower shells I may or may not spit out into the yard while mowing.

Unfortunately, sunflower seed season, goes hand in hand with my least favorite season... Mosquito season.

Those little turds are out for blood. My Blood.

The truth is there is nothing I hate more than a mosquito, my wife Susan can attest that I do not sleep until every mosquito in the house gets vanquished.

Since there are mosquitoes, James Brown and the “Biter Fighters” are out again.

I remember my first introduction to the mosquito sprayer.. My first thought was, man this town stinks at night... Then Susan explained what the City Shop does for Malta at night, to keep the mosquito population down.

For those who don’t know, I worked at Albertson’s and every now and then I would walk home from work, only to hear that buzzing sprayer.

I knew I had to watch my back, because I did not want to get sprayed as well. I’ve never felt closer to being a spy then when I played hide and seek with that truck.

The 23rd of June marked my two year anniversary and man has a lot happened since then.

Even with the torrential downpour of mosquitoes, I have to say I like it here in Phillips County.

So did my mom, who was here from the 8th to the 21st.

She was particularly fond of a few places around town, Stretch’s, Darla’s Three Sisters, Sew Sassy and CollectM Antiques to name a few.

As I was dropping her off in Billings, a couple of Saturdays ago, she told me, “I’ve done more here in the last two weeks then I have in the last six months.”

I’m proud to say everywhere I took my mom in Phillips or Blaine County she, a native Chicagoite (What I call us) loved it.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Malta Merchants and citizens for showing her a good time and that this small town is more intriguing than most may think.

I also was to give a major shout-out of thanks to everyone, who had been so kind as to say a nice word about our baby PJ. Every prayer, thought, gift, card and meal has been a tremendous blessing to our family.

Thank You once again to the staff at the Phillips County Hospital and Clinic and at Frances Mahon Deaconess in Glasgow.

Thanks to the staff at the PCN and PCHC for their flexibility and understanding during this pregnancy.
