One Nation, Under God
After 30 years as the Public Works Director for the City of Malta, John Demarais punched his timecard for the last time on Wednesday afternoon as a retirement party was held at City Hall in his honor.
"I thought I was ready for this," said Demarais, "but I'm not."
Demarais proceeded to thank each and every one of the city works employees at the party who worked under him. He looked them each in the eye and told a short story about them.
"I wouldn't be where I am today without them," he concluded.
Demarais then thanked the person he said was most important in his life, his wife, Sherry.
Malta Mayor Shyla Jones presented Demarais with a plaque honoring him for his service and dedication to the city over the years. She thanked him for all that he has taught her and the rest of the public works teams over the years.
Nearly 30 people were on hand at the City Hall to celebrate with Demarais, including Phillips County Sheriff Scott Moran, each of the city council members as well as James Brown, Demarais' replacement as Public Works Director.
"Good luck Buddy," Demarais said with a wink and a nod.
Cake was served, soft drinks were had and stories were swapped.
"If you want to find me," said Demarais, "look to the east and holler."
