The Malta M-ettes shined in the annual Malta athletic Club Invitational meet last Tuesday, April 29.

Malta was led by Freshman Sophia Stiles and Darby Schye, both of which placed first in events at the meet.

Stiles edged out tough opponents on her way to five first place medals in each of the individual events she participated in.

With names like Hinsdale’s Bethany Lacock and Bettie Carlon of North Star, the competition was fierce in the long and triple jump.

The team had a tall order going against so many strong teams out of classes A and C, and placed eighth at their home meet.

The next meet for the Mustangs and M-ettes will be the Fergus-Havre-Malta Triangular Saturday in Havre.

PENGUINS

The Whitewater Penguins made a late appearance to the Malta Invitational due to a scheduling conflict with an academic event, but the fact that the team missed out on most of the day didn’t stop them from placing in the few events.

Junior Kourtney Simonson, who was one of the few that hopped right off the three-plus hour trip and onto the track did exceptionally well, placing second in the 800 meter race. She had a time of 2:35.26.

The best part of her effort is that she nearly defeated Peyton Filius of Havre, who has been best among the best in the area. Filius won by a literal hair, with a time of 2:35.14, .12 seconds faster than Simonson.

Simonson was also a part of the long relay team that placed fifth in Malta with a time of 5:24.51. She was joined by fellow Penguins Kayleigh Cummings, Karly Santillan and Anastasyia Ivanchenko.

Jeret Warren, the team’s only male athlete has had an incredible year thus far, and it continued in Malta as he ran the 800 meter race in 2:20. 63. He placed fourth in the event.

Warren also placed sixth in the 3200 meter race, with a time of 11:09.

DODSON

Though the numbers in Dodson and Saco are low for track, the teams came out to the Malta Invitational and made noise.

The Coyotes have been an up and coming team, thanks to seniors Nick

Bear and Jesse Stephens.

The team was particularly strong in the high jump, placing three athletes.

Bear won the event with a leap of 5’10” and Stephens placed second with a leap of 5’8”. Fellow Coyote Trevor Banyai placed sixth in the high jump after clearing a height of 5’0”.

Bear and Stephens who are chasing the school record of 6’0” are both licking their lips at the opportunity to beat the school record at the Top Ten meet in Glasgow.

“We love the Glasgow track,” said Stephens.

“I love the high jump pit because its tar, it’s flat and the pads are nice,” Bear added. “It ‘s just a meet that we all feel comfortable at because it’s just that nice of a meet.”

Though both competitors have done well in the event, Stephens admits his arch needs to be better and more like Bear’s.

Bear’s arch is so legendary, teammate Trevor Banyai calls him “Flipper.”

Bear also finished third in the 800 meter run, after leading the first lap of the race, which is great considering he hasn’t even had four meets under his belt. He had a time of 2:15.88.

He placed third in 400 meter race, posting a time of 57.02.

Stephens also shined in the the long jump, after posting a jump of 18’5”. Bear had a jump of 17’5” and earned fifth place in the event.

The way that these three boy are working out, if they place well at the district meet we’re still looking to take home a trophy (at state),” said Coach Randy Domire.

In order for a top three finish Domire realizes that they need to peak at the end of the season and post their personal bests at every meet.

“They work really hard to get where they are at and we are really proud of them,” Domire said.

Raven Bear, was not with the team that day due to another school activity, has been on the rise, posting her personal best at most of her events.

“She just started the 300 hurdles. I think in all of her distance runs - the 800 meter, mile and double mile - she has already posted new personal best.” said Domire.

Bear has shown that she is a one-woman threat, and can put up a massive number of points.

Whitewater, Saco and Dodson will both see action at the Whitewater Invitational tomorrow at 8:30 at Penguin Field.
