M-ettes finish first at Fergus Meet; boys fall without help from Mitchell

The Malta M-ettes dominated the competition, placing first as a team with 102 points at the Fergus twilight meet last Tuesday, April 22. The closest team was Fergus

"Even though it was supposed to be a quadrangular (four team meet), there were 16 teams down there and we just had some great performances overall," said coach Tad Schye.

The team won first place in seven of 17 events at the meet, the big winner of the meet was freshmen Sophia Stiles, who won a meet high four events.

Stiles was first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.82, the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.49, long jump with a leap of 16'7" and triple jump with a length of 33'8".

Stiles was also the anchor runner in the girls 4 X 100 relay team, who placed first, thanks to the effort each runner put forth, including Marley Manoukian, Darby Schye and Mary Grace Kalal.

The long relay consisting of Manoukian Adrianna Bibeau, Jada Nicholson and Rheanna Messerly placed fourth at the meet with a time of 4:53.34.

Jada Nicholson improved her high jump clearing 4'10", a height that she nearly cleared at the Havre Lions meet a couple of weeks ago. Ember Drivdahl of Hobson placed second with a height of 4'8".

Darby Schye took first place in shot put with a throw of 36'8.5". the throw is her all time personal best and was three feet greater than second place finisher Kylie Mohana of Harlem. Schye also recorded a 29.28 time in the 200 meter dash and placed third in the event.

Mary Grace Kalal placed second in the javelin throw with a distance of 104'8.25", a throw ten feet better than her previous personal best. Kalal also participated in discus for the first time and had a throw of 84'6" and placed fifth.

Marley Manoukian placed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 18.85. She also placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 52.89.

Shay Garfield made her voice known in discus, placing fourth in the event with a throw of 85'5.5".

With a lot of help coming from the freshmen class, Malta is not only good, they are scary good. If they scores can improve, the team may be able to challenge other schools in Class B.

With only a few more weeks until district, Malta is headed in the right direction.

Their next meet is in Fergus Saturday. They also have the top ten meet, where only a select few athletes will attend based on previous meets.

MUSTANGS

The Mustangs track team suffered from the loss of a key team member as Kyle Mitchell was unable to participate in the meet.

The team put up four points at the meet, however a few athletes did place.

Nathan Veit threw a 35'10" in the shot put event.

Veit was also the anchor leg of the short relay team. He was joined by Ostin Welch, Tyson Carney and Caleb Salveson. The team placed fifth in the event with a time of 4:05.24. The long relay consisting of Carney Jalen Lamb, Salveson and Welch as the anchor placed sixth with a time of 4:05.24.

The team hosted the Malta Athletic Club Invitational yesterday and their next meet is scheduled to be in Lewistown Saturday may 3, for the Fergus Golden Eagle Invitational. The team also is scheduled to attend the Glasgow Top Ten Meet next Tuesday May 6.
