The Wolf Point Invitational that was slated for Saturday was cancelled due to the course not being ready. However, the Malta golf team had its first meet in Shelby a day prior at the Shelby Invitational and did well.
The girls team by Senior Tyanna Dunbar, who shot a 116. Dunbar finished sixth in individual scoring
She was followed by junior Kelsey Kuehn, who shot 125, good enough for a ninth place finish.
Kristi Grandlund was tenth with a score of 134.
Taryn Shores came close to a top ten finish with 137 attempts. Serena Stine had 144 and Cyra Mears had 132 as a junior varsity golfer.
Malta had the only girls’ team, so they won simply by showing up.
“We did pretty well for the first meet of the season,” said coach Lynne Nevrivy. “I would have liked to see the boys do a little better, but for the conditions of the course and the first meet of the year we did well.”
According to Nevrivy, the course was wet and there were many trees in Shelby that the team left their mark.
Nevrivy also sees an improvement amongst this year’s team from last year’s team.
“I am looking forward to the next meet,” she said.
The boys team was led by senior Garrett Zanto who finished with 93 strokes.
Sophomore Keenan Van Wichen shot a 98,.
Tyler Ost shot 102, Jase Galt 106, Collin Holman 108, Eli Waters 114, Hunter Love 117 and Cru Darrah 122.
Malta had two meets in line for the weekend that have already been cancelled due to weather or course related issues.
The team will instead venture off to Choteau for a meet Saturday morning.
The team may be without a few golfers, due to the district music meet in Poplar this weekend.
