The M-ettes basketball camp kicked off Monday, and with it came 27 young ladies hungry to learn more about the game of basketball and in the process learn only a part of what it takes to be an M-ette. "We're spending quite a bit of time on fundamental stuff," said M-ette head coach Nate Hammond. " We have some stations and we would like to balance camp with some shooting and ball handling drills." The Crossfire Roping Club kicked off it’s season, last Wednesday at the Trafton Rodeo Arena. The six week event features headers and heelers from all around Phillips County. Though event one was supposed to start last Wednesday, June, 18, it was rained out. Therefore, the club hosted both events one and two last Wednesday. About 220 Men, women and children of all ages were present at the open rodeo held at the Pavilion last Friday. Originally the rodeo was supposed to be at Trafton Park, but due to Malta's Thursday afternoon shower, mud and mosquitoes called for a venue change. The event featured broncs from Jimmy Orahood (Malta), bulls from AJ Crasco (South Lodgepole) and roping stock from Dwayne Ozark (Vandalia). Last week the Malta Swim Team had a one day meet in Plentywood. The team did good considering the team only had nine swimmers representing the team opposed to 30-45 swimmers from other teams, but the team was unable to compete for a placing. They were sixth of seven teams. Normally the Plentywood and Scobey meets are held on the same weekend, due to the fact they are a day long event. Seventy-two racers took the line on a fair weathered and mosquito-less weekend at the Hi-Line Dragstrip, which started Saturday and ended Sunday. Havre's Josh Viall was on fire, sweeping the event for the Sportsman Class. On Sunday, Viall had a dial in time of 8.17 and a elapsed time of 8:21. On Saturday, he dialed in at 8.09 and also won. Even though the swim team only had 12 swimmers present at the Roundup meet, the team took home sixth place out of eleven teams that attended. Janessa Malmend was the big winner placing first in the 11-12 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:23.91 and first in the 50 meter backstroke, with a time of 42.15. The Malta Swim Team took third at their home meet last weekend, led by 10-year-old Darrow Messerly, who pulled out a hat trick in the pool, winning in three events. Messerly won the Men 9-10 100 IM, with a time of 1:44.74 in the final round. He also won the 50 free, with a time of 38.09 and 50 Breast, with a time of 52.01. After having a rough year in 2013, due to a majority of the swim team being in the lower parts of their age bracket, the Malta Swim team will look to make noise this year. The Dodson Speedway held their first of three Auto Motocross events this year last Sunday. When all the smoke cleared Havre’s Seth Hamilton brought home the first place trophy in the A main grouping. This comes after he placed first in the second preliminary group. Forty-four young men from all over Northeastern Montana attended the Little Mustang Basketball camp that was held at the Old Gym last Monday through Wednesday. The Malta M-ettes volleyball team hosted it's annual M-ettes Volleyball camp last Monday through Wednesday, with 45 girls fourth through eighth grade present for the three day event. In it's first meet of the season, The Malta Swim team placed fifth at the Sidney Swim Meet. The team was only four strong at the meet. Malta was led by 14-year-old swimmer Shay Garfield who won the Women 13-14 100 meter breaststroke, with a time 1:37.24. She also placed second in the 100 meter backstroke, with a time of 1:28.33. The Malta M-ettes placed eighth in team standings at state after the State B meet in Butte, thanks to the heroic efforts of Sophia Stiles, Darby Schye and Jada Nicholson. The team scored 27.5 points in the two day event. Plains won the meet with 83, Big Fork was second with 58.5 and Manhattan was third with 38.3. Two Whitewater Penguins and a pair of Dodson Coyotes were unleashed upon Great Falls lat Friday and Saturday for the Class C State track and field meet. While neither school posted points, the teams should have plenty to be proud of, after showing such effort at the meet. The M-ettes did more than fine at the 2014 Northern B Track and Field meet in Great Falls. They not only showed up, they also placed second, thanks to seven individual athletes who placed in events. There has been a long wait to see who would take the reigns as Malta's Head Football Coach after Tad Schye stepped down from the position, last winter. Saco’s Charlotte Jolley has been this year’s biggest surprise from Phillip’s county, and her season isn't done yet. Dodson, Saco and Whitewater all had athletes place at the Eastern C in the girl’s meet. Jolley placed in three events, and only lost out in the 100 meter dash by a tenth of a second. Malta golfer, Keenan VanWichen took the top honors of the 16th Annual Jack Brogan Memorial Golf Tournament held Saturday, May 17th at Marion Hills. Keenan shot an 80 to win the scholarship. He follows in the footsteps of his brother, Spencer, who has won the tournament twice in previous years. Teammate Jase Galt shot an 86 to take second place. The Malta M-ettes placed second in the 2B district track meet in Glasgow last week. The team had a total of 117 points and placed eight athletes in the meet. They also will be taking both relay teams to divisionals in Great Falls this Saturday. COYOTES The Dodson Coyotes were at it again! The boys track team consisting of Nick Bear, Jesse Stephens and Trevor Banyai showcased their skills at the 3-C District track meet, which was hosted in Wolf Point last weekend.
