The Malta M-ettes volleyball team ended it's season after going the deepest it has been in the last twenty plus years, finishing third in the Northern B division. The team made it all the way to the consolation round, which if won would have taken the team to state, however the Shelby Coyotes proved to be too much defeating Malta for the second time in the tournament and giving the M-ettes third place overall. The Choteau Bulldogs would eventually defeat Shelby for the divisional crown in the...

The Malta Mustangs won their first playoff game since missing the playoffs last year. Though many doubted the Mustangs would make it this far, Malta has silenced the doubters defeating Roundup for the second time this year, winning a 20-17 thriller, that featured a stingy Malta defense, who didn't give up many big plays and for the most part were disciplined against the counter plays Roundup does so well. "It all started with our coaching staff, they taught us how to read the play," senior runni...

The season for the Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire came down to a showdown against the Nashua Porcupines twice last weekend at the District 3C Tournament, held in Saco, knocking them out of divisionals. Both teams went into the tournament tied, and in a draw for second place, when the Wildfire opted to open against Lustre Christian, rather than simply take the bye, which they won in a coin toss. "They came a long way," Coach Kathy Siroky said of her team, what finished third in the tournament. "Third...

The Malta Mustangs already locked down second place in 2B football and solidified their place in the playoffs after defeating Wolf Point last week, however that didn't stop the team from smashing the Harlem Wildcats last Thursday. This week however the Mustangs will open up against the Roundup Panthers who they beat 33-20 at Mustang field on September 19. Defeating Roundup proved to be...
Standing at number one in 2B volleyball, the Malta M-ettes look to capture the district tournament crown for the first time in Coach Julia Tatafu's program. Because of their 9-1 district record, the team is looking at a first round bye, and will not play until 5:00 tomorrow. Their opening opponents will be either Wolf Point or Harlem. On the other side of the bracket is second place Plentywood who will face either Glasgow or Poplar. Malta has faced each of these teams twice this year, only...
The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire tied for second in 3-C volleyball with the Lustre Christian Lady Lions at 11:30 a.m. in Saco. Unfortunately both teams can’t have a bye game at this weekend’s tournament. So the teams had a coin flip, with Saco-Hinsdale winning, but the Wildfire opted to play the first game, rather than receive the bye week. While the notion may sound crazy to many, the reason for the team to face an opponent in the first round, it makes perfect sense. Many of the team’s key playe...
RJ Taylor, a former Malta Mustangs football standout, has been starting at left cornerback for the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears. “My favorite part about playing for Malta, was just Malta’s tradition,”said Taylor, who is a 2010 graduate of Malta High. “Sports are what everybody lives for over there, so just being a part of any sport program that says Malta Mustangs is a pretty big deal.” He was only a freshmen at Malta High when they brought home the 2006 State B Championship. “I was the...
After high school graduation, many athletes could only dream of having one more chance to shine on their homecourt in their sport. For Chad Cebulski, wrestling once more at the Malta High School gynasium became a reality. The University of Great Falls Columbia and Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage was held last Saturday and Cebulski highlighted a night full of action. “It’s capping off our preseason of wrestling each other and kind of seeing where we’re at,” Chad Cebulski told the PCN. “We’re...
One hundred and forty runners formed the Class B girl’s race at the Cross Country Championships held at Bill Robert’s Golf Course in Helena on Saturday, October 25. It was also one of the most talked about races because of the infamous Morley sisters of Bigfork who have been placing very well in meets this year finishing well ahead of most of their competitors. It was no surprise when older sister Makena Morley, who is a nationally ranked runner, cruised ahead of younger sister Bryn and broke the all class record she set at the state meet in Mi...
Lightning struck on Wednesday evening in Malta, both literally and figuratively. Heading into halftime of Malta's game against the Wolves, bolts of lightning ripped through the night's sky – touching down under a mile away from Mustang Field – extending the intermission by 30 minutes due to safety concerns. Prior to that, the Mustangs football team struck for 34 points in the first two quarters leading to a 40-0 victory for Malta over the district foe Wolf Point. "I'm really happy with our kid's...
The M-ettes Varsity Volleyball team took the court on Wednesday afternoon after watching the school's two younger volleyball teams sweep the competition in three straight sets in both contests. Not to be outdone by their younger counterparts, the M-ettes hammered the Lady Wolves Varsity squad 25-11, 25-15 and 25-18 to take the 3-0 win. "These girls have done such a great job all season long," said Malta head coach Julia Tatafu. "When they step onto the court they are focused, they're intense...

The Malta M-ettes C-Squad Volleyball team made short work of the visiting team from Wolf Point on Wednesday afternoon, 25-12, 25-20 and 15-11 and did so, according to at least one M-ette, by playing as a team. "I think we played really well together and talked a lot," said freshman middle hitter Maria Brown. "If we play like that all the time I think we can win a lot of games." In the first match, the M-ettes found themselves trailing 4-2 early on, but timely serves from Grace Doucette – w...
The Harlem Cross Country meet was held on a cloudy windy Wednesday. "This meet made me think of the song that Mr. Ed the talking horse sang many years ago, 'A horse is a horse, of course, of course.' And I thought to add this line to the song, 'This course is a curse of course of course." said Coach Solberg smiling. She then went on to explain, "The course is a grassy surface that is easy on the legs, but because of the excessive amount of rain that the state received in late August, it was...
Tonight Malta will take on the Wolf Point Wolves at Mustang Field, with hopes of making the playoffs. If they don't win, they won't get in. "We need to defeat our next two opponents to get into the playoffs," said Mustang Head Coach Nick Oxarart. "We control our own destiny, that's the famous cliché." The Mustangs will have their hands tied, with the Wolves running a spread offense, loaded with talent. The team runs their spread out of Wing and Shotgun sets. "They're wanting to spread it out a...
The Malta M-ettes had a superb week as they defeated Plentywood, who was previously top ranked in 2B volleyball. "It was a big game for us, because we lost to them in five when they came here," Coach Tatafu said. "The team came out and played an awesome game." She went on to say that there were times they were down by a couple of points...
The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire had a good week, picking up two district wins against quality teams against Lustre last Thursday and Nashua. The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire survived a clash against the Malta M-ettes JV team last Monday. Facing injury and fatigue, the team won the game in four sets. The scores were 25-18, 25-21, 17-25 and 26-24. Malta's Gym was loud and seemed pretty intimidating even after Saco-Hinsdale won the first two sets. As Malta's JV fought hard to force a fifth game,...

For the men, Jeret Warren placed 11th with a time of 17.55. Jeret was 60 seconds behind a strong Browning athlete who claimed first, and was the first Class C male runner to cross the finish line. Though there was plenty of room in the stands for more to be seated, the 2 day event that was held for the benefit of TJ Kindle hosted by the Dodson Speedway was deemed a success. Despite a usual Montana breeze and rain during the night, the families of racing enthusiasts managed to look beyond the nip of the cool morning and put on a show of volume and success. There was a record turnout of racers over the two day event, with sixteen cars showing up and competing for the honors and trophies. But there was more to be said about the giving and...

The season started the first week in September and since then, each Tuesday and Thursday, four 4...
Though the Mustangs were outmatched 35-0 by the Glasgow Scotties last Friday, the team's playoff hopes are still alive, because they still have a legitimate shot at the second seed in district 2B, though that spot currently belongs to the Wolves of Wolf Point. This week the Mustangs will face a different pack of Wolves, the Cut Bank Wolves. Like Malta, Cut Bank is 2-3, but 0-2 in 1B football. Their two wins were against 0-6 Three Forks and 1-5 Thompson Falls. According to Malta Head Coach Nick...
