In it's first meet of the season, The Malta Swim team placed fifth at the Sidney Swim Meet. The team was only four strong at the meet. Malta was led by 14-year-old swimmer Shay Garfield who won the Women 13-14 100 meter breaststroke, with a time 1:37.24. She also placed second in the 100 meter backstroke, with a time of 1:28.33. The Malta M-ettes placed eighth in team standings at state after the State B meet in Butte, thanks to the heroic efforts of Sophia Stiles, Darby Schye and Jada Nicholson. The team scored 27.5 points in the two day event. Plains won the meet with 83, Big Fork was second with 58.5 and Manhattan was third with 38.3. Two Whitewater Penguins and a pair of Dodson Coyotes were unleashed upon Great Falls lat Friday and Saturday for the Class C State track and field meet. While neither school posted points, the teams should have plenty to be proud of, after showing such effort at the meet. The M-ettes did more than fine at the 2014 Northern B Track and Field meet in Great Falls. They not only showed up, they also placed second, thanks to seven individual athletes who placed in events. There has been a long wait to see who would take the reigns as Malta's Head Football Coach after Tad Schye stepped down from the position, last winter. It's a job that comes with a long legacy of excellent coaching, and sounds intimidating to the average man. Malta didn't hire just any "Average Joe," for the job. Saco’s Charlotte Jolley has been this year’s biggest surprise from Phillip’s county, and her season isn't done yet. Dodson, Saco and Whitewater all had athletes place at the Eastern C in the girl’s meet. Jolley placed in three events, and only lost out in the 100 meter dash by a tenth of a second. Whitewater’s Kourtney Simonson and Keira Simonson both will make the trip as well. Dodson’s Raven Bear will participate in two events. Ky. Malta golfer, Keenan VanWichen took the top honors of the 16th Annual Jack Brogan Memorial Golf Tournament held Saturday, May 17th at Marion Hills. Keenan shot an 80 to win the scholarship. He follows in the footsteps of his brother, Spencer, who has won the tournament twice in previous years. Teammate Jase Galt shot an 86 to take second place. The Malta M-ettes placed second in the 2B district track meet in Glasgow last week. The team had a total of 117 points and placed eight athletes in the meet. They also will be taking both relay teams to divisionals in Great Falls this Saturday. COYOTES The Dodson Coyotes were at it again! The boys track team consisting of Nick Bear, Jesse Stephens and Trevor Banyai showcased their skills at the 3-C District track meet, which was hosted in Wolf Point last weekend. The team had 59 points, which gave them fourth at the meet. The boys put on a jumping clinic, each earning a spot in the high jump. Justinn Marshall, Saco, rodeos for the University of Montana Western, at Dillon. The last college rodeo of the regular season was held this past weekend in Missoula. Justinn ended the year with 463 points in Breakaway Roping which placed her 1st. She was awarded a beautiful buckle and saddle. Marshall came into the final rodeo sitting 4th in Goat Tying. She split 1st in the long go, with a 9.0, then placed 3rd in the short go with a 9.5, which also put her 3rd in the average. She ended up with total points of 592.5, which bumped her into 3rd... Dodson, Whitewater and Saco all had junior high teams present at the Whitewater Invitational last Thursday. Dodson's seventh and eighth grade squad consisting of Tyrese Messerly, David Jaynes and Stephen Ereaux put up 45 points at the meet, which was good enough for fourth place. Malta's golf team went out to Marias Valley Golf Course in Shelby on Monday for the district tournament and three athletes placed in the top 15, punching their tickets to state tourney in Butte, which starts Monday at Fairmont Springs. Much hasn’t been heard of the Saco Panthers or their two track athletes, this year, however the team is hiding a young athlete that is quite the competitor in Class C track and field. Charlotte Jolley. Jolley, may not have the height of Hinsdale’s Bethany Lacock, but pound for pound and inch for inch, she may be even more athletic. Justinn Marshall competed at the Great Falls College rodeo this past weekend, held in the Four Seasons Arena. Going into the short go on Saturday night, she was splitting 3rd in Goat Tying with a time of 7.5. She beat that time with a 7.4, placing her 1st in the short go, and also winning the average. Malta was led by Freshman Sophia Stiles and Darby Schye, both of which placed first in events at the meet. The Malta golf teams showed much improvement at the Glasgow golf meet last Friday as the girls took first with a score of 507 and boys shot 373 but fell second to Glasgow by two strokes. "It was our best weather day out and we golfed a little better which is nice to see as we are on the down side of the season," said Coach Nevrivy. Braving the spring storm the first weekend in March, seven Phillips County 4-H Shooting Sports program youth participated in the State 4-H Shoot in Bozeman. The tournament was held March 1st and 2nd with youth from around the state competing. Whitewater hosted the Whitewater Invitational Golf Meet at Marion Hills Golf Course, Tuesday, April 15. In only his second golf meet of the season, Sophomore Keenan VanWichen placed second at the meet with a score of 87. Girls Malta scored 117 total points and was three points from tieing Havre, who won with 120 at the meet. Whitewater finished fifth with 26 points total. Malta was led by freshman standout Sophie Stiles who won three events and placed second in two other events. Thirteen Malta wrestlers competed in the Montana State Little Guy Wrestling Tournament in Great Falls on April twelfth. Ten Grapplers were in the metals. Matt Sims, Jesse Schipman, Thayne Mackey, Jerry Benge and Pat Gibbs supplied the coaching staff. We had a great crowd attend to cheer on the crew.
