The M-ettes have shown a lot of improvement in their first action of the year and nearly won the Malta invitational for the first time in years. The M-ettes made it all the way to the championship rounds against last years Southern C champs Winnett-Grass Range. They defeated Malta in two games with the first score being 25-21 and second being 25-14. The younger version of the Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire made their appearance at the Malta Invitational this weekend and eventually lost out in bracket play to TriCity. They did take out Poplar along the way, winning the first of two games 25-19 and 25-22, in a three game match. The Malta Mustangs will look to rebound from last year as the 5-3 team missed the playoffs for the first time in over two decades. "Our offensive line was banged up, Reid Robinson was banged up and we had Allen Williamson out with a concussion," said first year Mustangs Head Coach Nick Oxarart. The Saco Hinsdale Wildfire has a new look this year after losing Whitney Molina, Chadaya Christiansen, Shyla Gairrett and Bethany Lacock to graduation. Those four seniors helped the team to finish 12-3 last season and would've been a challenger for the C state title, if it weren't for unexpected losses to Bainville and Scobey in last year's Eastern C Divisional tournament in Scobey. The Dodson-Whitewater Harriers are back for their second year under their cooperative agreement, with a new coach Francine Stiffarm at the helm. Though Stiffarm has never coached and has never participated in cross country, she is the perfect candidate, telling the PCN that she has followed many of the students who have ran cross country since grade school. The Malta M-ettes look fierce this year, with eight or their 13 varsity players beings a part of this year's senior class. Among those starters is first team all-conference athlete Darby Schye and second all conference athletes Larimie Scheffelmear and Kelsey Kuehn. Last year the M-ettes Cross Country team got a boost. A boost by the name of Sophia Stiles. Stiles, a freshman last year is back and 11th year Coach Thea Solberg has no doubt that Stiles can repeat or improve her seventh place standing at state. Stiles' time in the three mile run was 19.49, in a race where time mattered. Former Mustang football and basketball standout Tucker Schye has put his red-shirt year at the University of Montana behind him and is excited about playing for the Griz this season. The Malta M-ettes volleyball team has a large squad, standing at 33 players between their varsity, junior varsity and c-squad. The team has been practicing hard and looks primed to defend their home turf at the 2014 Malta Volleyball Tournament on August 30 at 9:00 a.m. The varsity teams from all over the state will be playing at the high school, while the junior varsity and c-squads will be playing at the old gym. On August 2 through the third the Malta swim team went to Conrad for the state meet. The team didn’t place amongst the top teams this year, however there were several swimmers that placed in the top ten of their respective divisions. “The kids swam hard. They put in a lot of effort as Malta kids do,” Malta Swim Team Coach Donnie Lynn told the PCN. “That’s one thing I have no complaints about. On July 19, local border patrolman and martial artist and sensei Michael Morser did something he hadn't done in 10 years. He competed. Last year, former Malta Mustang football standout Jade Olson participated at Rocky Mountain College after red-shirting his freshman year. The 2012 Malta High graduate was a part of a backfield that utilized three different halfbacks during games in a pass heavy offense. As the team's starting tailback, Olson managed to lead the Battlin' Bears in rushing yards with 454. He also reeled in a few catches, equaling 269 yards receiving. In Sunday's AMX action at the Phillips County Fair, Chinook's Mike Powell ran a 1976 Pontiac Lemans. He fell in love with the sport after experiencing it for the first time. Gnats, heat and mosquitoes plagued the Mustang practice field as the Mustangs football camp kicked off last Monday, July 21. The beautiful thing about 4-H competitions are the fact that young or old the participant can do well. Jeret Warren, a senior at Whitewater High and RJ Burnham, a ten-year-old Saco resident, have a major age gap, but both of them won the title Grand Champion at the 2014 Phillips County 4-H Horse Show. 6 Glasgow golfers came into town on a smokey Saturday afternoon to challenge 24 of Malta’s best golfers for the Ryder Cup, last Saturday, July 19. Malta kept up the recent trend of the home field team winning the match. Malta defeated Glasgow 30-18 after three rounds of nine were played. Cole Hould isn't your typical 12 year old athlete. In a world ruled by sports like basketball and football, young Hould is a roper. Though he is from Havre and isn't a Phillips county resident, he is roping well. According to his mother Ruby Hould, Cole has been riding horses since the age of three or four. The Malta swim team showed up 26 strong at the Lewistown swim meet last weekend. Young Midget Darrow Messerly and Senior swimmer Jenise Amestoy, led Malta in scoring, with 34 points a piece. Messerly, who was sick for last week's meet bounced back hard, claiming two top finishes and a third place finish. Messerly won the Men 9-10 100 meter IM, with a time of 1:31.39 and 50 meter breaststroke, with a time of 45.36. His third place finish was in the 50 meter freestyle, an event in which he posted... Drivers from all over the state were present at the Phillips County Motorsports drag races last weekend for the second race in their four venue, "Montana State Points Race."
