Add those descriptions to a deluge of good ol' Montana rain and a race track and you have the elements that were present when the Dodson Speedway hosted the final competition for the 2015 season on October 3 and 4 at the Dodson Fairgrounds. Last Thursday night the Malta gymnasium featured plenty of hard-hitting action as the Malta M-ettes and North Country (NC) Mavericks met for the first time since the new co-op had been formed. The M-ettes faced tough competition last weekend across state lines as they attended the Dickinson Invitational last Friday and Saturday. The team faced a total of five teams at the tournament, each of which were equivalent of Class AA or schools in Montana. The Dodson Speedway will be the scene of two final days of the 2015 racing season as they host the event this Saturday and Sunday. The race will be a benefit weekend, with the proceeds of the weekend going to Tonya Messerly, a local resident who is battling kidney failure. Tonya (daughter of the late Joe and Jeri Orendack) and her husband Vance, returned to Malta in 2007 after having moved to Havre for ten years; they have one son, Logan, who resides in Bozeman. The final race of the 2015 Phillips County Motor Sports, known as the Big Dollar Race, was well attended and finished the season on yet another high note for the 10-year old organization. On Saturday, the junior dragsters – Thunder for those ages 11 and below and Lightning for children 12-through-18 – and those looking to “test and tune” took to the speedway for a total of 125 racers on the day. In the Malta Mustang's home opener, it was supposed to be a clash of Mustangs as the team took on the Shepherd Mustangs last Friday in the team's Homecoming game. What really happened was a Shepherd beat-down as Malta won the game 28-0.
