Last Monday, August 17 marked the beginning of practices for the Malta M-ettes volleyball team and with the new year, comes new players. The M-ettes welcomed nine new freshmen to the team, including good friends Raina Mortenson, who played for Malta's junior high team last year and newcomer Libby Rush, who went to Twin Spruce Junior High School in Wyoming. Malta's Coed Softball League wrapped up it's season last Tuesday, August 11, the way that it started, with a few rounds of batting practice. Jo Tharp, the league's founder felt that the six week league went pretty well. "The first meeting that we had, we only had a few people show up and we did batting practice," Tharp said. Fair Demo Derby; Havre's Kultgen shows grit, determination For the first time in five years, the Phillips County Fair hosted a demolition derby and the event holding nearly 900 was a success. The 100th Annual Phillips County Fair had many highlights including the Milk River Challenge Rodeo, which was the closing Grandstand event held last Sunday afternoon. The event brought many shouts from the rafters as many of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) riders put up eight second rides in both bull and saddle bronc riding events. The first rule of table tennis is not to call it "ping pong." "That's because there is a difference between ping pong and table tennis," John Waters told the PCN. At the Eastern Divisional swim meet in Plentywood, the Malta Swim Team only had 19 of their 45 swimmers, however 18 swimmers qualified for the state meet in Roundup this weekend. Malta took eighth overall as a group and 13 of the 18 state qualifiers placed in the top twelve in all three of their events. As the Malta Co-ed softball league closed out its second game of the year, the score of the game was noticeably smaller than that of the season opener, which was 15-9. Last week's game ended in a 7-6 thriller won by Team A. The defense in the game was better with multiple double plays, and stronger defense in both the infield and outfield. The Phillips County Fair's first event was held last Saturday at the Milk River Pavilion; the 2015 4-H Horse Show event featured a dozen horsemen. Phillips County residents and AMX enthusiasts ventured to Havre to compete in the Hill County Fair races over the weekend. Attending from this area were Luke Brown, Scott Hould, Wes Lundstrom, Mike Plouffe and Flint Schaaf. The Boots and Saddles Club held its second event of the year last Saturday in Trafton Park. Cheers filled the stands during the races. One rider that brought up a few of those cheers was eight year old Lela Domire, who posted a time of 21.09 during mini barrel races. The Milk River Challenge Open Rodeo was a hit at last year's Phillips County Fair. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the fair and it's only fitting to bring back one of it's best events.
