The Malta Wrestling Club accounted for twenty of the over two-thousand wrestlers at the 2018 Montana Open held at the Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings on Saturday, March 24 through Sunday, March 25. The team took forty-eighth out of 145 teams. The event was won by Upper Valley Aces, who had 94 points from 33 wrestlers. Sidney Wrestling Club was the runner-up with 82 points from 49 wrestlers. Darby Schye, a former Malta M-ette standout and a junior forward for the University of Montana Western Bulldogs, stepped up for her team in the 2017-18 year and helped them get into the NAIA Semifinals last March. It has been fifty years since the Malta M-ettes won the 1968 Montana Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Girls' and Womens' titles. The Malta Wrestling AAU Little Guys had another strong meet as they won the Small Team first place trophy last Saturday, March 17, in Great Falls. The Old Gym was the site of the 2018 Malta Middle School Wrestling Mixer, an event that featured close to 75 middle school wrestlers and close to 200 spectators at last Friday, March 16.
