    The Lady Mavericks opened their 2018-19 campaign with a split as they were able to pick up a 39-34 win over Shields Valley, followed by a 59-29 loss to Roy-Winifred at the Fergus Holiday Showcase in Lewistown last weekend.     The 2017-18 season ended in heart-break as the Malta Mustangs basketball team fell to the Glasgow Scotties in the Northern B Divisional Elimination bracket. Since that game, the team has graduated five seniors, two of which made the 2018 2B All-Conference list with Taylor Matthews receiving All-State and first-team honors and Konner Kuehn receiving second-team honors.     The Dodson Coyotes have four athletes over six-foot, a lot of returning talent, and a lot of good reason to be optimistic in 2018-19. The team lost David Jaynes, five-year player for the team, to graduation. Jaynes helped lead Dodson to a fourth-place finish in the 3C district last year.     The 2017-18 season ended in divisionals for the Malta M-ettes, as Fairfield defeated Malta 36-30 in the consolation semi-finals. Neither team made state, but this season has the potential to be different as Malta has 21 athletes on their roster, many of which have played varsity and sub-varsity for Malta last season.
