It’s not every day someone hits a hole in one, but that’s exactly what Malta’s Travis Somerfeld did on Sunday, May 17. The PCN asked the former Malta High School Golf Coach and current Activities Director about the feat. A letter from the MHS Activities Director First, I want to and most importantly recognize our student-athletes of Malta High School in these difficult times. Our student-athletes were stripped of many opportunities due to COVID-19. I want to acknowledge the seniors who could not finish their senior season of Track/Field or Golf. I want to thank Pierre, Mark, and the Phillips County News for helping us give our student athletics the recognition our student-athletes deserve. I also want to say...
The 2019 Mustang Football Team started preparation for the season in June with a team camp in Spearfish, South Dakota by competing against teams from South Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado. The season included eight wins, two losses, a second place finish in the North Division, and a first round playoff victory. The season ended with a Quarter-final loss in Red Lodge. Many great memories were made along the way. This team was a very unselfish group that was a ton of fun to coach. They were led by...

I want to mention how proud I am of this year's M-ettes. We didn't get the chance to bring home that trophy from State in Butte, but we were in very good position when it all ended. I believe we would have ended up third if this would have played out. This year started off with travel and games throughout the month of June, and learning to play with a different group of girls. When the regular season got underway in November we had eleven freshmen and one foreign exchange student, a total of...
The 2019-20 season for the Mustangs was a real rollercoaster ride type of a season. We started the season against two-time defending state champion Bigfork Vikings at the Coyote Classic in Shelby. Going into that game, the coaching staff did not know what to expect. Our team was young and without a lot of experience as we were starting two seniors, a junior, and two sophomores. The lack of experience did not matter; the Mustangs went out there and played an amazing game defeating Bigfork 65-52....
I would like to start with some thank yous. The administrators were very helpful to me this year, especially Mr. Somerfeld who helped this technology-challenged old coach. Our parents were very supportive and that was a real treat. They made it easy in this transition year. Thanks to our managers, Rya Soul, Georgia Orahood, Lauren Doney and Mady Bain for all their effort this year; we can not make it without their contribution to the program. Last but not least, thanks to our assistant coaches,...
The 2019-2020 cheerleading year was a fun, crazy, and bittersweet year full of emotions. Being my fourth year coaching, it was the year my first freshmen were seniors. I am so proud of everything they've achieved in these past four years. I can't help but be very grateful for all the growth I've gone through as a coach with them by my side and I cannot believe they'll be off to college this fall. I hope they bring smiles to others like they brought to me. This year, the cheer program was in...
The 2018-19 Golf season was an excellent season for the Malta golfers. First for our Most Improved Golfers. Hayden VanWichen, as a sophomore, was one of our best golfers. His growth from his freshman year to his sophomore was immense. Has a freshman Hayden's average score was a 116 with never shooting under 100. His sophomore year, he never shot in the 100's, and his average score was 96. Hayden had a very consistent year placing in every golf tournament we played. Hayden just fell a couple of...
