Back to school. Back to school, to prove to Dad that I’m not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight. Ohhhh, back to school. Back to school. Back to school. Well, here goes nothing. For those of you who don’t know, that was a quote from Adam Sandler’s 1995 cult-classic movie Billy Madison, in which was movie about an adult, who had to go back to grade school in order to inherit his father’s hotel business and prove to his father he wasn’t completely l... Football has officially started. Well sort of. I’m proud to say I shelled out twenty clams, to watch any preseason NFL football game I want. Though I only care about one team. DA BEARS! It was invigorating being able to watch a game of my choosing live as the Bears took on the Philadelphia Eagles... Yes that team that last year exposed the Bears’ porous run defense that was dilapidated with injuries to nearly every starter late last season. That Eagles team, coached by former Oregon head coa... This year’s fair was pretty legit. I enjoyed it even more so than I did last year, due to the fact that I had the opportunity to attend more events. This was the first time I have ever seen a tractor pull. I have to admit I’d never put a vehicle under that much punishment. I will never hop on a bull to face two tons of fun after I’m thrown off like a rag doll. You couldn’t pay me to attempt to break a horse. All those things were cool to watch though. From a distance. Thank the Lord for that st... Full story
Since I was young, I’ve always been a fan of major American sports like basketball, football and baseball. I have to admit I was a little bummed when the scholastic year ended, because I got caught up in the school fight songs and our kids giving it their all on the field and court. I have missed everything from football to volleyball to basketball to track and field. I’m excited to see the school year is near due to my love of those sports, but I’ve gotta admit I’ve enjoyed the horsema... Full story
As I sit in my home on a Monday night, I can only help but notice Mondays are a little darker. A little gloomier. Over the last 12 weeks or so no matter how much work had I had to do for the PCN, I would not miss a single episode of 24. That show was my escape from an otherwise eventful week. Now that the season came to an end, I’m left wondering is there going to be more or is this the end for Jack Bauer? Like 24, there are many things I wish would come back. Like Surge. I remember when g... Full story
It always has fascinated me how people can control horses to do exactly what they want to do. I don’t come from a ranching town and the only horses I grew up seeing was when I went to the City and saw horse drawn carriages. But to think of a time where horses were your vehicle and work-machines makes me feel less-than, because I to this day will not ride one. I may never be able to break a horse. However I know of a few things I can. A brand new pair of pants. I will wear the life out of a p... Full story
We’re more than halfway through 2014 and the halfway point of the year often gives me a chance to think about promises or resolutions that I have made of the year. It seems like a common thing that we as Americans make verbal agreements to try to give up something or do more of something every year… I say that’s dumb.. If I were to say, I’m going to run a mile every single day of 2014, yet when you aim to start running a blizzard hits town, what then? By the time the snow has melted I bet you... Full story
It’s sunflower seed season, which means I will probably try every variety of sunflower seeds I can get my hand on. I like them so much, that I’m attempting to grow sunflowers in my front yard, to harvest the seeds. My sunflowers won’t be on the same scale as David Veseth’s, whose plants typically grow past ten feet tall in August, but I’m hoping for anything, due to the fact I don’t have a green thumb... Technically speaking, it’s brown. I have been trying to turn my lack of growing skills into something good, because I’ve come to the realizat... Full story
Alright everyone… I’m proud to announce… If you didn’t know, that my wife Susan and I heard the first cries of our baby boy Pierre James (PJ) Bibbs, last Wednesday at 4:02 a.m. at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow. It occurred to me that my son is a miracle in a sense. I don’t use the term lightly. I’ll take you on a little journey of what my wife, myself and our mothers (Doris Bibbs and Nancy Fauth) went through. Monday at about 10 p.m. (basically deadline day for writing) Su... Full story
One thing I’m happy to say about Phillips County is that it values family. I don’t care what they say, a child needs a good mother, but even more than that they need a good father. A father, in a perfect world provides stability, protection and a loving household. The last few decades many men that have had children have fallen short of the title “father.” The father is a person who sets a tone. He leaves a legacy. He loves his wife fiercely and would give anything to see his family thrive....
One common question I always get is, “Where did you go to school?” The most common predetermined answer by readers is journalism school. I hate to break hearts, but I didn’t go to journalism school yet… The truth is until I landed a job here at the PCN, I didn’t like reading, let alone writing. In fact, there was nothing that made me more nervous than when my professors at Saint Louis Christian would say, we would have a 15 page dissertation or 30 page write up on a few scriptures. It was enoug... Full story
One thing I didn’t look forward to my senior year was walking down our football field in front of thousands of people during my high school graduation at Romeoville High School in 2005. One reason was the amount of students graduating in my class. My class was about 400 students. I just knew that it was going to take forever and a day to get to my name even though my name was in the front of the line. In my mind, I was like, what if I had to go to the bathroom? Would I have to wait til the end o... Full story
Being from a house of three boys and no sisters. I didn’t exactly gain an appreciation for barbie dolls and beauty pageants. I had power ranger bed sheets, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on VHS. I like explosions and “The Walking Dead.” I love having dreams that I am one man against hordes of zombies. I love sports and I don’t care who knows. The only sister I had was a dog named Peggy. That being said I was unleashed on the Distinguished Young Women of Phillips County, per the request of my editor. The thought of Toddlers and Tiaras and Honey B... Full story
Don’t tie your shoe in class Last weekend, I did something few people could ever understand… I watched most of the NFL draft on my smartphone and or on a computer. It’s only weird because the draft is the most boring thing about football. I have no power over what picks my beloved Chicago Bears choose, I’m not a paid analyst and I’m sure if I really tried I could find ten things more productive to do with my time. Why do I like watching then? There’s no awesome answer to that.. Maybe it’s... Full story
My mother was smart because even though she never got a daughter through childbirth, she taught us, to wash dishes, how to do laundry and how to cook, things many people don’t teach their sons. I can honestly say that in the great scheme of things, I’m not a total slob (though, my work desk gets piled... The struggle is real.) I can do laundry enough that I can save my pregnant wife from the task every now and then. Some people may give me grief for knowing how to do all those chores, how... Full story
I hate to say I saw it coming.. But I did. My wife and I are expecting a new-born almost any day now. The due date is within the first week of June. I’ve never been a fan of ultra-sounds or finding out what sex the baby is, because for some reason it seems intrusive. But since the wife wanted to use all of that technology, why not. For months we were expecting a girl, so we planned accordingly. We had everything ready even a pink bath-tub. Then, a few weeks ago, we went to the hospital only t... Full story
There are just some sayings I don’t quite understand. For instance “The pen is mightier than the sword. “ I get the meaning behind it. I know that communication is better than direct force or violence. But if you took the statement literally, it would be a no-brainer. If I were in a war in which I needed a weapon, my collection of Pilot G-2 pens would be the last weapons I would reach for. If you haven’t tried the G-2 yet, you haven’t lived. I have a few stashed away, including a pink one, just... Full story
Being one of those church boys, I grew up with my family celebrating Easter. One of my fondest memories of this holiday of life included a visit to my mother’s mom, aka Granny. Granny was the type of woman that wanted to know if you clapped in church, she would always take us to the store to get fruit stripe gum and she loved the Lord with all her heart. Rest in Peace. On our visit to Granny we would all dress up for Easter and celebrate Christ’s resurrection as a family. This holiday not onl... Full story
Last week marked the start of the 2014 Major League Baseball season. With that comes countless hours of looking up at my phone and away hoping the little blips on the screen indicate a score from my Chicago White Sox or a strikeout, double or triple play from their defense. Those “blips” on the screen remind me that I do not have cable and I will not likely see a Chicago baseball game, basketball game or football game because I’m not in the Windy City anymore. There are a few things I miss... Full story
