I was disappointed to see Casey Knudsen side with Democrat colleagues to vote against HB113, which would have protected Montana children from genital mutilation and hormone-blocking drugs for the sake of treating “gender dysphoria.” Studies indicate that upwards of ten percent of those who undergo the procedure known as “gender-affirmation surgeries” regret their decision, and the number is higher for children. Meanwhile, the disfiguring procedures double the risk of stroke in both males and females, double the risk of heart-attacks in men (an...
I don’t put much stock in old wives tales and the like, choosing science over myth when given a choice. Unless, of course, it suits me. And an early spring always suits me. That’s why, on the second day of February every year for as long as I can remember, I anxiously watch the morning news to see if Punxsatawney Phil has seen his shadow. If so, the story goes, we’re in for six more weeks of winter. You’d think by now I’d know better. The Pennsylvania groundhog is only right about half of t...
I used to give bats no more thought than most folks do. They were just another interesting critter I caught fleeting glimpses of as they flitted about at dusk. Then I moved to Malta, home to the northernmost colony of migrating little brown bats in North America, and I became intimately familiar with them. The 100-year-old stone house we bought there was bat central. Trim was missing on a couple of second-floor windows giving them entry into the house, and while remodeling the place I found...
Lorna Rae Philp, 50, of Hilger (Winifred) left her earthly body at home surrounded by her husband Tom and loving family and friends, Thursday evening, January 28, 2021.. She fought a valiant fight against cancer and advocated for HPV testing and vaccination to help young people avoid spreading the virus that can lead to cervical cancer. Lorna was born June 27, 1970 in Glasgow, Montana, the daughter of John A. and Ella Mae (Heser) Stolen. She was welcomed by three sisters, Lee Ann, Torri, and... Full story
Welcome February! We are cold up here, but not much snow. I heard that many ranchers have put calving later in March or so! That explains why there is no precipitation. No puddles or snow banks to have the calves in! I'm teasing, I hope the time when calving starts that the weather is accommodating! The moon was beautiful this week! This last week I traveled to Whitefish on the train! Very relaxing, no stress! Got to Whitefish about 9 in the evening, caught the shuttle to The Lodge on Whitefish...
Congratulations to President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice Pres. Harris. Its Great! Best of luck to you both. I watched most of the inauguration on T.V. and it was awesome! Let’s forget about the past and look forward to 2021. Back in Whitewater, Montana, now. Get well to Pat Anderson who is in the Hi-line home, for now. Note: If anyone has news call me at (406) 674-5576 (Let it ring.) Congratulations to the Whitewater North Country Mavericks on their recent games in Whitewater and also their wins e...
Less than 36 hours. That's all it took for Biden to kill American energy security and independence. Yesterday, (Wed., January 20) Biden pulled the plug on the Keystone XL Pipeline and re-entered the United States into the Paris Climate Agreement. Tonight, it was announced that Biden will stop all new oil, gas and coal leases on federal lands. As Senator Daines put it on twitter: "This is an outright attack on American energy and union jobs." He's right. America has an energy demand that must be met. It will either be met by American workers or...
Republican lawmakers wasted little time in getting down to business on one of their top priorities: arming Montana college students. Less than two weeks after the Legislature began its session, a bill that would allow concealed carry of firearms on public college campuses passed a vote by the GOP-controlled House. The bill now proceeds to the Senate. The idea is that armed students could prevent mass shooting incidents on campus. No one would start popping caps in Abnormal Psychology 101...
For January 13 Sympathy to families of Chip Pewitt (Whitewater) He died in an accident recently. There was a “celebration of life” at North 40 in memory of Chip last Wednesday. Life goes on. Congratulations! To all Whitewater penguins and mavericks on their games last weekend. Best of luck to all for the 2021 season. Joyce (Austin) Donovan was visiting Sally Austin recently. Joyce teaches school in Rocky Boy near Kremlin Mt. Joyce said, “We are still teaching school on computers” It must be...
Admittedly, I’m a bit of a Luddite. I don’t tweet, blog or Zoom. But I do have a favorite device: the radio. I prefer the immediacy it provides. Always have. Although the news app on my phone offers a plethora of options for keeping up with the outside world, I’m content to listen to a single news broadcast at the top of every hour. It’s more than enough, especially in these troubled times. Since this all began last March, Barb and I have been keeping to ourselves, something I’m much more comf...
I am relieved that the sports season started. I am relieved that the sports season started. I know that COVID-19 has changed many aspects of the sporting events including the amount of spectators that can attend, the encouragement of wearing masks and keeping your hands clean, but the athletes are able to compete. For that, I am thankful. Our kids are doing well this season. Several teams are still without a loss in their first three weeks of basketball, which is a testament to the resilience...
My friend, Jane, said grandfathers are love and time to spend it. Baby Jenny didn’t say anything; she just gurgled and cooed as she nestled contentedly in her grandfather’s lap. My camera caught the moment in a photo that I captioned “Mutual Admiration Society”. Grandpa and Jenny smiling at each other We had it enlarged and framed; that photo expressed it all: love between a grandfather and his granddaughter. We were so blessed that our children’s maternal grandparents lived practically next door to us. This beloved grandfather let our three...
Wow! 2020 will be one of those years we’ll be talking about 20 years from now while rocking on our front porch, more than the winter 1978-79 or the winter of 2010 -11. How could one have known what 2020 held for the American public, and more importantly, the residents, families, and staff of Hi-Line Retirement Center. I was in Wisconsin in March when I received a phone call from the facility telling me Hi-Line Retirement Center was “locking down”, and would be in quarantine until future notice. I didn’t take it very seriously after all we alwa...
Dear Editor, Honestly, I don’t know how to start this. This was shocking, to see a sitting president incite a mob to attack the Capitol Building of the United States of America. To hear the House Minority leader FAIL to condemn this action and those who brought it about (including himself). Is this what the Republican party now stands for, mob rule? I hear these mealy mouthed legislators whine and cry that their constituents have concerns and questions about the election. Those questions have been answered, in over 50 court cases those q...
If I can hang on just a little longer, like magic it will be gone. My fears will vanish, and I’ll be able to stand proudly upright once again. In the meantime I’m terrified. I’m of an age that any day could be my last. As careful as I try to be I still slip up occasionally. Literally. And then I fall down. For 60 days I chased the dogs up hill and through dale, a loaded shotgun in my hands, safely navigating the uneven terrain. On the 61st I got my comeuppance. Following pheasant tracks in a...
For January 6 We are approaching January 1, 2021, a brand new year! Let’s hope and pray the virus ends, and 2021 will be better. Happy New Year to all! Again, Sympathy to all who have lost loved ones. Also, “Get Well” to all who are sick. Here in Whitewater we have celebrated Christmas early. The Whitewater School had a wonderful Christmas concert program. Santa left candy, but could not stay, due to the virus. Tuesday was the last day of school before vacation. The school had lunch, and a par...
I am a retired farmer’s wife. I cooked for one husband, seven children and various others. Now the horde is gone and I’m left helpless. I don’t know how to cook for two. I can’t gauge the amounts of anything it seems. We have left-overs from the left-overs. It’s a malady, I’m sure. The symptoms begin when the first child leaves home and worsens as one by one they leave, until Ma and Pa are left gloating; “Now they’re gone! We get to eat what we want: Liver and onions, broccoli, sauerkraut, lutefisk, pickled herring and so forth. But sudd...
“Dot was drinking the Christmas tree water again,” Ace said, eyeing the puppy with disdain. “That’s no big deal,” I told him. “I’ll be taking it down soon anyway.” “She also has one of your shoes,” he said. “Maybe you should start minding your own business and not minding hers,” I replied. “I don’t have any business,” he shot back. “I’m just helping you.” “Thanks, but I think I’ve got it under control,” I said. “Try to relax.” “I can’t,” he said with a low growl. “That’s true,” I had to admi...
“Get Well” to Richard Dunbar (Whitewater) and all who are sick anywhere. “Happy Retirement” from the hospital to Bonnie McMullen of Whitewater and all who are retired. “Hello” to Taylor Hellie’s mom who spent the Thanksgiving Holidays with the family. She returned to Arizona recently. Lu Bessel spent Thanksgiving with her sister and family in the Little Rocky Mountains. This week I didn’t gather much news. Here is a chapter from my book, “Hills Beyond Whitewater Creek Bridge.” Chapter 44. Horse,...
It took a while, but I’ve finally turned into that guy. My friends and I used to poke fun at older dudes who no longer hunted big game, didn’t care if they bagged a limit of birds, and were as pleased with the fluidity of their casts as they were with what was biting the end of their line. I couldn’t imagine life without elk, a game bag full of birds, or a fishless outing. I used to take great pride in harvesting an elk every fall. Back then I could walk forever, and I shot a lot of elk miles...
Undoubtedly, this Christmas is like no other for each one of us. Looking back on such a nasty year, it is hard to imagine the injustice of not being able to or facing the decision of whether to spend it with our loved ones. As a person who cherishes the memories, traditions and rituals that accompany each holiday season, I feel especially aware of how many people may be struggling. Many of us are facing not just the choice as to how and with whom to celebrate, but how to get through the holidays without a loved one that we have lost this past...
It’s been a little more than a year ago now that my dog Ruth died of a brain tumor. She wasn’t yet three years old, and had already turned into a wonderful bird dog. She had a good nose, was enthusiastic, and retrieved anything I shot. She was also a sweet dog. I’ve mourned the passing of a lot of dogs, but Ruth’s death was particularly difficult for me. I still don’t understand why. Maybe it was because her passing was so unexpected. Maybe it was because she was going to be my last dog. I’d...
Sometimes you can parallel life to lifting weights. Of course, when everyone is watching you just beat your old one rep max, you naturally want to add more weight. Despite the happenings around the world, my little coffee business was doing better than last year, growing; pushing me to the brink. Then a couple of weeks ago, I learned that my long time boss was moving and he asked me how I felt about it. Mark is like a brother to me, so I am bummed that he is gone. Eventually I was approached by...
Sympathy to all who are victims of the C-19 virus, or have lost loved ones to the virus. Several families traveled over Thanksgiving holiday. Ashley Green and children, went to Spearfish, South Dakota to visit her family. The Wisher family took Jana W. to Billings, where she caught a plane to South Carolina for a while. Patti and Steve Young went to Malta to visit family. I spent Thanksgiving with my daughter, Gale Young, in Saco. Challise and Tim Hoff came, too. A real surprise! We had a delici...
The snow that fell during a blizzard early last month has pretty much disappeared across most of the state. Except here. The streets in town are still icy and a covering of settled, hard snow blankets the landscape. I used to take pride in that distinction when I lived in Cooke City. Early snows there tended to hang around until spring, and folks quickly embraced winter, firing up the snowmobiles and dusting off the skis at first chance. But I no longer live in Cooke, nestled in a mountain valle...
