As I sit here writing this, I’m thinking how nice it was yesterday, Sunday, March 28. It was around 70 degrees out and an absolutely beautiful early spring day. And now, one day later, as I look out the window, its 30 degrees, wind is blowing 50 mph, and it’s snowing! I find myself looking ahead to summertime, and hopefully the summer Olympics. I missed them last year. It’s going to be weird not having Michael Phelps in the pool swimming faster than a dolphin, or watching Usain Bolt make everyone else look like they are running in place on th...

March 19, 2021 To the Editor and Staff of the Phillips County News I am taking this opportunity to recognize the Phillips County News, past and present, and its contribution to my understanding of early 20th Century life on the Northern Great Plains. Born in San Diego the week World War II ended, I remain a Californian. But my roots are in Montana where both my parents were born and grew up. My mother, Esther Pearl Stine, her sister Hope, and brothers Byron, Kenneth, and Keith were Malta High School graduates, as were my father John McKnight...
At times I wonder what we were thinking. Like when I was getting dressed one day last week and discovered a hole in my sock that wasn’t there when I had taken it off the night before. Or yesterday when I was on my hands and knees in the living room mopping up a coke that had been sent flying after a high-speed collision between a TV tray and a dog bed. Or all the time I’ve spent cleaning up broken branches and tree bark that litter every room as if we’d been running a wood chipper inside the h...
A small treasure was found in the backyard of a local Malta residents’ house. This person has asked to remain unnamed at this time. At least until the “treasure” has been looked at by an antiquities dealer and the item has been deemed authentic. The Malta resident found the item while preparing their backyard for this years’ garden. They have always had their garden in the same place every year, except this year. They had decided to change the area to get more sun due to a tree getting older and bigger and giving more and more shade. They ti...
Get well to Janet Brown (my sis) and all who are sick. “Happy Birthday” to Pastor Nagy, Grey Simonton, again to Jon and Seth Siewing, and all March birthdays and anniversaries. Did you remember to turn your clocks (and watches) forward? I wish they would leave it one way or the other. Remember, soup supper every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Lenten service at 6 p.m. at Whitewater Lutheran Church until Easter, which is April 4th, 2021. All are welcome. Whitewater Baptist has Sunday School at 10 a.m...
March 11, 2021 Dear Editor, Two weeks ago, we had our second Milk River Gospel Jamboree meeting for this year. The main topic of discussion was the jamboree, that until 2020, we have held every year since 2001. Last year, the plague of 2020 hit! We had 5 groups scheduled from Canada and 3 from United States, including Tim Lovelace. We looked forward to great gospel music, performances that blessed, and some that could cause belly splitting laughter, all family friendly and most with a gospel message for all. But it was not to be. The issues...
Dear Phillips County News, On behalf of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS), I am pleased to announce the graduation of cohort 1905/1906. Darin Hanson is a student in the cohort and will receive a Master of Arts degree in Security Studies (Homeland Security and Defense) on March 26, 2021 pending submission of a finished thesis. The CHDS Master’s degree program is a fast-paced, challenging program that required tremendous commitment by Darin, as well as the support and understanding of the families, s...
It must be spring. The first grizzly bear of the year has emerged from hibernation in Yellowstone Park. I’m sure I ran into his relatives years ago. Grizzlies, more than any other animal, are a hallmark of wild country to me. I love knowing there’s still a critter out there that just might stalk and eat me. The first grizzly I saw in the park was at a distance. He was ambling through the sagebrush while I watched from the relative safety of a stand of trees a couple of hundred yards away. It was...
As the warmer weather gets closer and we are able to do things outdoors again, there are a few things that I have missed due to the pandemic that I am hoping to be able to enjoy again. First and foremost is concerts! I have always enjoyed going to live music shows and have been lucky enough to go to many of them over the years. Mostly rock and metal concerts, but I have gone to a handful of country shows as well. I’ve seen most of my favorite bands, Kiss, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Tesla, but there are a few I would still like to see whi...
Sympathy to immigrant children new to the U.S. Were number 1! Is a chant by the Whitewater Penguins and North Country Lady Mavericks! Congratulations to the boys team and all PC teams also to a great season of basketball. Many family, friends, and fans went to tournaments in Billings. It is great North Country is well supported. I listened to some games on KMMR Radio. It is great the radio offers that service. Back to Whitewater area. Many ranchers are calving. Some ranchers including the...
Phillips County Patrons near and far: A lot has been active within one year impact of COVID-19 upon our daily routines. In that process, I began a write-in question-answer USPS mail delivery service targeting majority healthcare issues. Holding a bachelor’s degree in personnel behaviors (BBA), master’s degree in healthcare administration (MHA) and ABD doctorate in adult education (EdD) with a cumulative 3.57 GPA, I am very able to answer a variety of analytic questions outside the healthcare industry, too. I accept no credit cards. Either cas...
I’ve always been an avid reader. As a kid I was a big fan of the Hardy Boys mysteries, reading nearly every book in the series. Frank and Joe solved crimes, rode motorcycles, flew planes, even had their own boat. As I grew into my teens I still read the Hardy Boys, although by then it was more to laugh at the outdated language in the books than it was to lose myself in the predictable plot lines. The brothers and their “chums” frequently tailed “swarthy” characters, who typically glanced a...
It’s March, Happy Birthday to all March birthdays! Also, to all those celebrating Anniversaries. Again, congratulations to the Mavericks and all teams in various tournaments. Have fun! People really travel for their favorite games. Local Whitewater fans went to the Maverick games. Janice R. also visited Janet Brown (her aunt) and my sister in Billings. Again congratulations to Rory Green for winning the spelling bees. Good work! Sunday, I went to a family birthday party for twins, Seth and J...
It’s been a year this month since the world as we knew it changed. Barb and I were on vacation in San Diego but raced home to Montana when Covid-19 hit the fan. Except for a brief foray into Wyoming last summer I haven’t been out of the state since. My 33-year association with the Bozeman Chronicle ended that month when the paper dropped all of its columnists. My final column in the Chronicle, detailing our trip to California, is still displayed on the paper’s web site. The headline reads “Doin...
Why have the ratings of award shows dropped so much in the last few years? I can remember watching the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, and all of the music awards with my parents as a kid. We would watch them because they had great hosts and were very entertaining. Take the Oscars for example. When I started watching, Johnny Carson was a regular as the host. He was funny and nobody was safe from anything he would do or say. The next host I really remember on a regular basis was Billy Crystal. The beginning of the show when he was hosting, was a...
According to their own article in local papers recently, the American Prairie Reserve (APR) leases pasture out for 13,000 head of cattle. At $25/head for 6 months, the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization would generate 1.95 million dollars per year, all tax free. As more Ag land is purchased by non-profits, the tax burden will continue to increase for the rest of Montanans. I hope our Legislature can do something to level the playing field! Laura Boyce, Winifred...
February used to be my favorite month. The shortest month of the year, February also signaled the end of winter for me. For years, Barb and I would head for warmer climes at the end of the month. While it might remain cold and snowy in Montana for a while yet, I didn’t care. I wouldn’t be back until spring. Then things changed. Instead of looking forward to dragging a boat clear across the country to Florida, I began to dread the trip. We seemed to always hit a blizzard in the Dakotas. Each yea...
I recently read an article that the Illinois legislature is trying to pass a bill prohibiting the sale of the video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA), saying that it was a direct cause of the escalation of carjacking incidents happening in and around the Chicago area. The article stated that the offenders are getting younger and that this game is making it seem ok to do this. It reminded me of the attack on hard rock and heavy metal music that happened when I was growing up. It was assumed that listening to those kinds of music led to devil...
“Get well” to Diana Simanton and Pat Anderson. Hello, here’s hoping everyone is well, and no one has the C-19 virus. Several I know have had shots. It’s basketball tournament time. Good luck to all teams, remember to be good sports. It is “Lenten season.” Whitewater Lutheran Church has services on Wednesday eves. Soup supper will be served at 5:30 PM Wednesday’s, followed by Lenten service at 6 PM. All are welcome. Easter Sunday is April 4, 2021. There will be a Daylight Savings Time change,...
I’ve always been suspicious of innovation, especially when it comes with a high price tag. When my wife paid $40 a few years ago for an insulated cup I was aghast. But when I found the cup sitting on the kitchen counter the next morning still full of ice I was sold. Soon I had my own pricey, well-insulated Yeti drinking cup. However, I can’t yet bring myself to spring for a Yeti cooler. It’s not that I can’t afford one, but $400 for an insulated box to put ice in seems a little silly conside...
Things have been weird this year. Some good. Some bad. Some odd. I will say. It seems that maybe to some extent, people have been nicer to each other. I think with the quarantines going on, people seem to be putting a lot of their differences aside. Maybe. I see the occasional jabs between Democrats and Republicans on social media, but it seems tamer to an extent. Of course, demeanors have shifted. Hypocrisy is witnessed on both sides. People from one side are saying the exact opposite of what...

Let’s pray for our government and new President Joe Biden. Greetings, from the North Pole! It is 20 below zero according to “Whitewater Weather Bureau.” The snow will stay awhile, which the high wind will blow into drifts. It’s a Montana winter. Our Whitewater “Penguins” and North Country “Mavericks” don’t mind the weather, they keep warm playing basketball. The girls are number one rating! Good luck to all teams. In spite of precautions, we are all still concerned about C-19. Mainly, wear mask...
I’m a gun guy I own rifles and pistols and shotguns. They run the gamut from single-shots, over-and-unders, and side-by-sides to semi-autos, pumps and bolt-actions. I inherited some, bought most, and received a few as gifts. Four months of the year I hunt, a loaded weapon in my hands more days than not. In the off-season I shoot clay targets with the shotguns and kill cans with the .22. Sometimes I fire my 9mm Italian cop rifle just to hear it go rat-a-tat-tat. That being said, I’m sick and tir...
