Shortly after arriving in Montana as a homeless 18-year-old I remedied that situation by getting a job that provided room and board. After all, I had a skill. I could cook. I spent much of that first summer in the backcountry working for an outfitter who took clients on pack trips into the Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone Park. The wages were minimal, but enough that I could pay my own way. That’s how I had been raised. Handouts and charity were for the less fortunate, not for me. But that w...
The days closing out summer and welcoming autumn will be busy ones of importance to the military. The auxiliaries of the VFW and American Legion will observe some days of recognition and events together and will work earnestly to promote support for our Veterans, patriotism and Americanism. The first day of every month is now being observed as “BE THE ONE” day and the focus is to be the one that is there for Veterans who might be struggling with suicide. September 2 is Victory over Japan Day, the Air Force Birthday is September 18th. The 10th o...
We have been having hot days again, but some mornings are downright cool. School has started again so things seem busier, so watch for the young ones while driving in town. Sometimes they forget to look. Thanks to Bonnie again for being out mowing. She is keeping it looking so much better and we all appreciate her doing this. For the first time, I have been bothered by mosquitos while outside working. The last couple of times we have been to the dumps there have been so many bees, and Wham, one...
Sympathy for the victims of the fires. Be careful with Montana Fires. Get well to all who are sick, including Steve Young. Whitewater School is in session; it livens up the town. It was so different when I went to school. We didn’t start school until September or after Labor Day. Now it begins in August. In first grade there were no school lunches, we took our own. There were no buses, everyone came by themselves. When the lunch program began, the fantastic cook was Gladys Berg. She cooked at W...
On August 30 and 31, we can enjoy a super blue moon! It’s a super moon because it will be closer to the earth, so it’ll appear larger, but not much to the naked eye. It’s called a blue moon because it’s the second full moon in a month. With all the smoke and dust in the atmosphere, the moon will have a reddish-orange look to it. My sister Debbie and my daughter-in-law Brandie drove up to Loring on Friday. We all went to Fort Peck Theater to see the play “Misery”. Brandie hadn’t been to that...
Pat Murdock and Therese drove to Saco last Sunday to take in the last kid’s rodeo of the season. Grey and Trax Simanton, Blake Ozark, Royce Strobbe, Rowdy Beil, and many more participated in. All the results will be posted this week by Lexie Haynes who puts in many hours toward this event for the kids. Thank You, Lexie. Scott and Pat Anderson have a new grandson named Waylon. Born August 17 in Spokane to Sam and Mari-Beth Funk. He has an older brother, Wyatt, who is two. Kora LaBrie, daughter of Kris and Tricia is off to college in Miles C...
Nearly seven months after the end of last year’s hunting season -- cut short by an old-man ailment -- I’m ready to go again. At least I think I am. Almost every morning for the last couple of months the dogs and I have walked a brisk mile. At least Ace and I cover a mile while Dot does at least three times that racing through the sagebrush. Fortunately, I don’t have to keep up with her. An electronic collar keeps Dot in check. Ace, on the other hand, is kept in check by his advancing age. Stone...
This past week I was introduced to the Medicine Hat Lodge (MHL). What I didn’t know was that many people around here have experienced this hotel in Southern Alberta, as well as the many water slides in that area. Though my sons seem to be afraid of heights, they had a blast on the two water slides at the MHL. The first day, PJ went on the slides over and over, making a few new friends while doing so. Despite enjoying the smaller slides at other hotels in Canada, Lincoln didn’t get on the wat...
Police raiding a newspaper and confiscating reporting material seems like something one would expect to find in a banana-republic, or in a scene from a dystopian novel. Yet, that is exactly what happened recently to the Marion County Record. The Record is a weekly newspaper in rural Kansas, serving a population of approximately 1,900 and known for its dogged reporting on various issues affecting the community. On August 11, the newspaper office was raided by the Marion Police Department as was the home of its 98-year-old co-owner, Joan Meyer,...
Sympathy for the victims of the fires in Hawaii. Beware of all fires. Kyler Venable and Serena (his mom) were on the TV and radio this morning, thanking people for their generosity and donations given to him. Especially the $15,000 given to him by a basketball group that held a fundraiser. Kyler was in a terrible accident in which he ended up losing part of his leg. Kyler lives in Miles City. Note: He is Jeannie Green’s grandson. If anyone wants to help, contact Jeannie. We all pray for K...
Two days of intense heat, in the high 90s or low 100s! It almost did me in but the cool weather came in on Saturday and it was such a relief. It is still cool on Sunday, but the breeze is still present. Hopefully, the harvesting is wrapping up. An unusual weather phenomenon is happening on the west coast. A hurricane has developed and is now pushing up the coast of California. It is now called a tropical storm, but pushing northward so even Montana is in the path. The main thing that is...
We received some rain on Sunday so it should spruce it up again for a while. It also cooled it down from the terrible heat we were having and soon we will be wishing for it again. Polly Solberg made it home on Saturday after several days in Billings and Miles City. School starts this week again so kids will be busy. In some places, it started last week. Teri and Asher Leys of Choteau came to visit Dora Henry for a few days and got some fall work done. I wish I had some of his young energy. Get...
I saw the two sides of Montana last week, one still green and lush, bustling with commerce and traffic, the other already dry, the landscape turning to khaki, with sparse traffic and few people. The influx of folks moving to Montana is hardly noticeable where I live in Malta, a small town with a declining population. But what Malta has to offer isn’t what newcomers to the state are looking for. There are no trout streams up here, and no snow-capped peaks. The muddy, slow-moving Milk River skirts...
The conclusion of my family’s trip to Sweden. I have been on an airplane several times in my life, including a flight to Montana 11 years ago. During my flights years prior to our trip to Sweden, I do not recall being afraid during any point of the flight. This time was different. I had moments of nervousness before the flight, nervousness during the flight, and nervousness during the landing. This was during all five flights. I have no idea what caused this fear. Another weird fear that I h...
Here in the Whitewater area, farmers and ranchers are swathing and baling hay. Soon they will prepare for harvest. So much farming depends on the weather. Most of the area and county attended the PC Fair in Dodson. Congratulations to all who had 4-H animals and entries. Also, to those who had entries in open class. This included Jeannie Green. She flew from Arizona to attend the PC Fair! She entered bread, doughnuts, and others and she won! My friend Irene Wendalyn and I went to the fair on...
The weather was perfect this week. Moderate temperatures, and a couple of evening showers, but the wind was vicious for a few days. Harvest is well underway! I think the amount of grain is up there! The farmers deserve a good year! My sister Dee Arndt from Kalispell drove across the mountains to help me out sorting and throwing everything from the farmhouse. We got a lot done and took several loads to town and MOI. No clothes but lots of glassware. Cindy Clark and Carol Lumsden stopped in on...
We have been having some more hot weather with little rain. We did have a quick shower that gave us a good dunking for just a little while. All this week is expected to be hot with Thursday’s high expected at 99. School will be starting next week again--------seems like a short summer off. Virginia Solberg took Polly Solberg to Billings -----her son’s birthday! And then off to Miles City for visiting and business. Teri and Asher Leys came from Choteau to visit her Mom Dora Henry and help for...
While running the boat down the lake last week I spotted what looked like a bird of some sort on the water. Expecting it to fly as we passed, I was surprised when it didn’t. I slowed the boat, and turned around to investigate. As we got closer I could see it was a young gull. Grabbing the landing net I scooped up what turned out to be two birds hooked together on a fishing lure. Each gull was impaled on a treble hook through the beak. They were barely moving, but when I twisted the hook out o...
This week marks my tenth Phillips County Fair. Prior to moving to Malta, I hadn’t experienced a county fair. I love this time of year because it is the highlight for so many in our community. Fair time just feels different than any other time of the year. In nearly every weather situation at the fair, including rain, heat, or clouds of mosquitoes, generally people are happy. There is a legitimate feeling of joy that radiates through the air. Maybe it’s the fair burgers at the 4-H or Boy Scout bo...
Sympathy to the families and victims who were shot in Billings, Montana. Pat Donich (Sally Austin’s sister) was visiting here in Whitewater. She lives in a resort area in Seeley Lake. Bruce and Lyn Hill spent a week with family who joined them in Seeley Lake. It is August 2023! Happy Birthday to all who are celebrating including my son Mitchell Moore. Mitchell lives in Seattle Washington. It is Fair time, many of Whitewater are involved in 4-H. They have animal and livestock exhibits and o...
It sounds like the Phillips County Fair was a roaring success again this year! 108 years in a row, now that has to be something to be proud of! I did not feel well so I opted to stay home. Lu Besel came over on Sunday morning to see some of the stuff I’ve been finding in the trunks and totes from the farm. We picked chokecherries at Cindy Clark’s also. Cindy has a few great bushes that the birds hadn’t ravished yet! At senior meals, we were surprised by Jeanie Green! It was fun to see and visit...
The Fair has been in full swing, and I have even enjoyed some of the concerts sitting on my back porch. Congratulations to all the ribbons and awards the kids received. They work long and hard with the animals and do a good job. And of course, the Indian Relay Races are always so nice to watch and enjoy. Velyma Broadhead returned home from hot Arizona and other places on Sunday evening. She said Arizona was really hot and dry, with no rain since May. Guests staying at the home of Polly Solberg...
As I meet with Montanans in every corner of our state, I hear the same concern often –taxes are too high. And they’re right. Taxes are too high and need to be reined in. Two years ago, we enacted a fiscally responsible budget, and as a result, the State of Montana today has a historic budget surplus. Ultimately, that means you overpaid your taxes, and we’re giving it back to you. When we released our Budget for Montana Families last November, we again held the line on spending, and we focused on providing hardworking Montanans with meani...
I always seem to be a step behind. Call me Johnny-come-lately. When everyone else was wearing Gore-Tex, I was still in leather and wool. When all my friends were listening to cassettes, I was rockin’ out to eight-tracks. While planning a trip last week to North Dakota to get a boat repaired, I sought directions online to the location of Swenson Marine in Bismarck. As I was reaching for a pen and notebook to copy the information from my laptop, a brilliant thought struck me; take a picture w...
Beware of all scams. Many are fraudulent. Whitewater news for the week: Happy Birthday to Pat Murdock. There was a nice party for her at their homestead up North. Also, Happy Birthday to Lilliana on July 4th, and to my girls Teresa and Gale. Happy Anniversary to Bill and Rana Jesson and those celebrating in July! Pastor and Dawn Stensvick and Taylor and Adam Hellie flew to South Carolina to attend Jana Wisher’s wedding. Congratulations to them! Sommer Green is babysitting their children in W...
