  • I will always choose local

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 18, 2021

I usually grow a big garden -- corn, potatoes, peas, beans, squash, and the like. This year I didn’t. So little rain fell in April and May that it seemed a good idea to skip gardening, and concentrate on fishing instead. I did plant a row of tomatoes and peppers, and I’m growing some pole beans, but that’s it. I just didn’t want to fight the drought. Instead I gave in. My yard dried out and yellowed a month ago. There’s no grass to mow, but I still knock down the weeds every couple of weeks. Wh...

  • A Perfect Night in My Home State

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Aug 18, 2021

As a kid growing up in a small town in Iowa, there wasn’t a whole lot to do. We were too small of a town to have a swimming pool and the closest one was nine miles away. That’s a bit too far for a ten-year-old to ride his bike, swim all day and then ride back. Believe me, I did try it once. I was completely worn out before I tried to ride back home. Luckily, one of my friends’ dad drove me home with my bike in the back of his truck. The one thing we did have as kids was baseball, and I played it every year. Little League, Babe Ruth, and High Sc...

Also, Happy Anniversary to all who celebrate this month. Special Happy Birthday to Fred Allery of Whitewater, 90 years old! Fred has lived on the farm here in Whitewater most of his life. It has been staying very hot with no rain. Some rain has been forecast but has not showed up except for one small shower we had earlier. The 106th fair has come and gone. The 4H sale went well and price was pretty good for the kids. The events were enjoyed and people enjoyed visiting others they had not seen for some time. Speaking of which, Polly and I visited with the former Linda Kienenberger (Wolery) formally of Dodson whom I had not seen in (as she remembered it) eleven years. So nice to...

This year has been one for the books! After last year with the restrictions on travel, etc. I thought “back to more normal” would be great! I was not thinking about a record year for no moisture and high temperatures then pile on a truckload of grasshoppers! I'm thankful that most of the people I know are well, and managing their lives ok. It's just hard to adjust to a different lifestyle. Wow! We got a gentle rain for about 12 hours on Sunday! It was welcome, Fair goers were enjoying the Ind...

  • We're just too remote for most

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 11, 2021

Years ago, while living in Bozeman, I suggested that people who didn’t farm or ranch should live in town. I even recommended folks looking to move to Montana check out existing housing in the small towns scattered across the state where infrastructure is already in place. This was years before the onslaught of home fixer-upper shows on HGTV, and decades before anyone ever thought about working remotely. Still, it seemed a good way to slow down sprawl, protect agricultural land, and revitalize r...

  • My mother enjoyed her time at the PC Fair!

    Pierre Bibbs, Publisher|Aug 11, 2021

What a week! For starters, my Chicago Bulls are one of the most improved teams on paper after the first week of NBA Free Agency, the U.S. was pretty dominant at the 2020 Olympic Games, racking up a total of 113 medals, 39 of which were gold. China was second in the medal count, winning a total of 88 (38 gold), and the Phillips County Fair was held in Dodson! Even with such a great week of sports, my biggest highlight was seeing my mother. She came to town during Fair week because I told her how...

Today I talked on the radio show “Montana Talks.” I talked against the horrible shooting and murders everywhere, also what should be done about all of it. It’s so sad. Wednesday at the North 40 Café, (senior meal), we had a guest speaker, Lisa and her daughter of Glendive MT. She gave us information on various programs on “Counsel on Aging.” One item we discussed was the fact that I got kicked off the Phillips County Transit Bus without a valid reason. Transportation is a real problem fo...

Hot temperatures continue to hang in every day----no rain----the nights actually get quite cool. One wonders how it can be so hot during the day and so cool a few hours later in the night. Everyone is getting ready for the 106th continuous fair this weekend. Activity at the fairgrounds and a few motor homes and living trailers are coming in. Hope there is some break in the heat. The new trailers for the teacher housing are coming in, not hooked up yet but are here. The floors in the bus barn...

With the smoke in the atmosphere, the sun looks neon orange as it sets in the west! It makes for very brightly colored sunsets and the moon is very orange when it comes up also! It is just starting the waxing crescent phase. The weather has been hot mostly and dry! And now I'm seeing more damage by the grasshoppers also! Cary Woodruff, Shannon and Richard Carr and daughter, Charli were dinner guests at Dixie Stordahl’s on Tuesday. Cary and Richard are paleontologists at the Great Plains D...

  • I'll miss my Yellowstone fishing friends this year

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 4, 2021

It was 50 years ago this month that I first fished the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. I was working for an outfitter in Cooke City and had been asked to accompany an elderly couple into the canyon and tend the horses. I don’t remember how the fishing was but I suspect it was good, good enough that I soon began making the trip on my own on foot. In the ensuing half century I rarely went a summer without at least one trip into the canyon. The cutthroat were plentiful and 40-fish days were common...

Sympathy to the family of the man killed in an accident July 20, near Whitewater. Details later. It is sad that the terrible Covid virus is making a comeback. Beware of it, and take precautions, especially traveling. Also beware of scams. Some scams/groups try to take your money, house and property. On a lighter side, Congrats to Jahmiah Hoffman LaBrie, on his swim meet wins. There was a blood drive at the WHS July 21. It was a 4-H project, and was sponsored by Beau Simonson and 4-H. Ashley...

The weather has remained very unstable, and hot with some cool nights. We continue to have strong winds and one night had strong winds with a little rain, but since have not seen any of the rain that has been forecast. We have again had days all in the nineties and a few over the 100 mark. Saturday saw 100 and Sunday made it to 102. Terri Cole went to Billings on Friday for an appointment, to visit kids and attend a wedding shower for a grandson. Dora Henry was in Malta on Wednesday for business...

Loring is still in the throes of summer with hot dry weather. I know some people thrive in the hotness, but I’m ready for highs in the 70’s. In three months I’ll be wondering why it’s so cold! Never satisfied!! I saw a family of Hungarian partridges and am happy that they have survived thus far! Our community extends sympathy to the Martin Campbell family. Carol Lumsden traveled with the Norville grandkids to Lewistown for the swim meet. The girls have improved so much this summer! The Loring...

  • Winter Can't Arrive Too Soon, or Can it?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 28, 2021

I wonder what’s next? First it was disease, then drought. Now we’re dealing with wildfires and an infestation of grasshoppers. Winter can’t arrive too soon. Or can it? It snowed Sept. 9, 1970 in the Beartooth Mountains. Early snow isn’t unusual there, but this was a dump, more than a foot of wet, heavy snow. We were in the process of setting up a hunting camp at Granite Lake and the string of horses we’d left there in a pole corral escaped and disappeared during the blizzard. The wrangler...

  • Early Takeaways on the Olympics

    Mark Foss, Thoughts on Things|Jul 28, 2021

With the opening ceremony last Friday, the 2020(1) Olympics got underway. The ceremony itself was weird. Nobody was in the crowd except for the countries diplomats and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) members. No parents or fans were allowed, but the politicians of all of these different countries could go. That seems in direct conflict with the message that all of these countries are trying to sell. Do as we say, not as we do. But that’s a whole different article. The IOC has a large list of rules for all athletes to follow. Some o...

“Happy Birthday” to July B-days, including my daughters Teresa and Gale. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Reichelt (former Whitewater residents), on the arrival of their baby girl named, Shyla, who was born in Africa. Kenny was there to welcome the baby but returned to the U.S. Mother and baby will come home, as soon as the covid virus makes safe travel, and immigration laws will allow their entry into the United States. Good luck with that. Congratulations to KMMR radio on their years of...

It finally rained on the evening of Tuesday, July 13; Just an easy fine rain. It was very hot Wednesday, July 14, 93 degrees. Cooled down Wednesday night, Thursday 103 degrees, Friday 102 degrees with no more rain. Saturday it was 93 degrees and Sunday, an even 100, Dry with no more rain. Grasshoppers are getting frisky again so I guess spraying time is here again too. Between the grasshoppers, the drought, no rain, and the extended extreme temperatures one wonders if God may be testing us for...

Whoa! Is it hot enough? I think so! I’m in Billings for a week and it is very hot here. But just have to remember the month of January and realize that winter is not that far away! I took a tour with a bunch of ladies to Wyoming this weekend! We stopped at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody! It was fantastic! I stayed for 6 hours and hit every part but didn’t read everything. We tasted the Wyoming Whiskey offerings at Kirby, visited the bentonite plant where kitty litter is processed. The dri...

  • I have no regrets about leaving my lucrative job

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 21, 2021

In 1985 I left a lucrative career in the construction industry for a newspaper job. It wasn’t for the money. In fact it was more than 10 years before I again began making the hourly construction wages I had given up. But I found the work interesting enough to make a career out of it, and there were the perks, free coffee among them. I also had the great pleasure to work with a number of talented photographers along the way. And while I never made enough money in the newspaper business to a...

Sympathy to the family of Wink Cole of Dodson. Get well wishes to Pat Murdock, she writes the North Country News. Last week there was a funeral for Anita Brown, (Gene Brown's wife of 40 years). It has been hot again, mine said 100 degrees on Sunday and then the wind came up and cooled it off some but about blew us into the next county again. Still have grasshoppers and no rain so we are still in the drought. Yards and crops are suffering. Just a few weeks until fair, looks like its going to be a hot one. Good to see that there will be several events for the grand stand. I love the Indian relay races, among others. It was quite a worry this week when we had the tornado warning. They do...

The flycatchers eggs hatched. I think only three, but they are keeping the mom busy! It is so hot here that I'm surprised the eggs aren't hard boiled! I see a few hoppers moving in but so far they aren't getting my geraniums! I'm hoping the sharp tails will enjoy their special treats! And that they eat lots of them! I went to trivia this week at the brewery! It's always a fun time and I get to see some friends that I don't see often! I did not win this week. But that's ok! The Loring Women's...
