My wife and I have a new passion. It involves physical exertion, lots of teamwork, and kneepads. Sometimes it gets loud. We're mixing our own concrete and pouring a patio, one 32-inch square at a time. We finished two squares last week and only have 37 more to go. Because it's hunting season and I made a prior commitment to my dogs, we only get passionate in the afternoons. Once I return from the morning hunt, however, Barb and I get frisky. She tells me what to do. I tell her that doesn't...
We had a nice rain Saturday night; All moisture was appreciated. Still, ten days till the first day of Autumn but the days are sure getting shorter, darker longer in the morning, and much earlier at night. Saturday, we went to Saco and took in the Saco Fun Days. We watched the parade, it was great. Several children from Whitewater, including Sommer and Rory,...
The temperature this week has been really warm for this time of year. Most days were in the high 80’s and low 90’s! Still have some dew in the mornings, thank goodness! The gardens are slowing down in production. I certainly enjoyed the zucchini that Cindy gave me before she left on vacation! Congratulations to the Blunts on the birth of Dorothy Lynn! She is such a sweetie and I could tell that the whole family is in love with her! She was born on the 5 of September. It sounds like all the stu...
Lately, deliberate misrepresentations have been circulating regarding American Prairie’s proposal to graze bison on six federal allotments in Phillips County. While most Montanan’s who have commented thus far clearly welcome our proposal, some remain committed to a misinformation campaign based on rumors and misdirection. This only serves to perpetuate divisions and erode our civic fabric. As such, I am compelled to set the record straight. The Bureau of Land Management can issue grazing permits or leases and modify existing permits to sub...
I’d pretty much given up big game hunting and turned all my attention to birds. There were a number of reasons. I could shoot something every day for one. And if I was successful it didn’t take days to pack out the meat for another. But this season is different. Blame the drought or the heat or a combination of the two, but hunting birds lately is starting to feel more like an elk hunt. Over the first three days of the season, I saw one grouse and he appeared to passing through. I’m hunti...

The temps this last week have been pretty warm, but I do enjoy a warm day with a cool evening! I flew Cape Air to Billings and back this week. The ride was very smooth and uneventful, and I’d recommend it if you need to go to Billings. While in Billings I had a Dermatology appointment and my sister Debbie honored me with a birthday party! I’m on another trip around the sun! Congratulations to Amus, Everette, and Etta Blunt on the birth of their sister, Dorothy Lynn! Pete and Carol Lumsden are...
There are places I’ll go this fall that I never see any other time of year ‑- small, intimate spots hidden from view, hard to reach, with little reason to be there unless you’re hunting or gathering cows. Some are places I’ve killed a bird or two. Others are places I always water the dogs, where the steep banks along the creek have sloughed off providing easy access to the slow-moving flow. There are a couple of ancient automobiles, abandoned on the prairie decades ago, that I always visit i...
Sympathy to families of Everett Marks of Saco. “Get well wishes” to Pat Murdock and Kimberly Hellie who are sick. It is September! It’s hard to believe summer is almost over. “Happy Birthday and “Anniversary” to all who are celebrating their days. If you would like a “greeting”, sent to someone, let me know, and I will put in our WW News. Hope you had a nice Labor Day. Some from the area went to “Saco Fun Days.” I have gone before, and it is “FUN”. However, we still need to beware of the enemy,...

The moon is waning and soon it will be a new moon, really dark, but great star gazing time! The rains were spotty this week. Every drop is welcomed! The grass greened up a little, and the dust was washed off the trees! The goldfinches have really moved into my sunflowers! They are quite the acrobats, standing upside down to get the seed! I had a hummingbird come into my feeder this week! I was lucky to see it! Cecile Norville spent the week with Nana and Papa Lumsden. Pete Lumsden and Jay Blunt...
I always get a feeling of melancholy this time of year. When I was young it was brought on by the realization that school was about to start again, that the endless days of summer were not so endless after all. Now it’s brought on by those necessary seasonal chores summer’s passing requires, one in particular. We pulled the pontoon boat out of the water last week. We’re not done fishing yet, but we have another boat for that and it’s kept in the garage when we’re not there. The pontoon stays in...
Last Wednesday was the first day of school for my oldest son and new second-grader, PJ. I also had the privilege of staying at home with my youngest son Lincoln, a three-year-old. Lincoln is an inquisitive young lad, who asks over 200 questions a day. Though I used to joke about a talkative person trying to talk underwater, I almost fell over when Linc told us about a scare that he had on a water slide. He said, “I tried to talk underwater.” Thankfully, mom was there to pick him up out of the wa...
Let’s pray for peace all over. In Montana, sympathy to the victims of the fires burning in Hays, Zortman, Lodgepole and other places. We pray for rain to help put out the fires and save our dry lands. In Whitewater and Phillips County, there is no hay due to the drought. Some ranchers are being forced to sell some of their cattle. It’s sad. Our sympathy to them. Last Wednesday at the Senior dinner, we were glad to have guests. They were Erna Schlieve and her two sisters. One sister is emp...
Rain! Precious rain fell from the skies several times this week. Unofficially, the amount in Loring was 2 inches! Everyone has a big grin on and the grass is even a bit greener! The full moon this weekend was truly beautiful! And the two planets, Jupiter and Saturn, were closely dancing for position! Carol Lumsden and I drove to Whitewater where we picked up Lu Besel and on to pick up Lynn Hill and then on to Pat and Roseann Olson’s for a baby shower honoring their daughter Leah. Many of t...
I’m always amazed when celebrities and politicians are forced to step down after a past indiscretion comes to light. Often it’s simply an inappropriate comment caught on tape that spells the end. Mike Richards, the newly named host of Jeopardy!, comes to mind. Shortly after being named to fill the shoes of the late Alex Trebek, it was discovered that Richards made demeaning comments about women and homeless during a podcast seven years ago. Fortunately, I’m technically challenged. I don’t...
Every year, there comes a day that is unlike any of the two hundred and thirty or so days that have come before it. I wake up, get dressed, go outside, and with the first breath taken in my brain automatically thinks one thing. Football. I don’t know exactly what it is. It’s got to be some kind of endorphin. Something triggers my senses. It’s not exactly like how my left knee can tell me when it’s going to rain in four and a half hours. That’s more of an ache. This is a smell, a temperature, atmospheric pressure, I don’t know. But I do know tha...
Montana fires are all over. Let’s hope and pray they are out. The Phillips County Fair was so fun and wonderful!! I went three days! Friday, I looked at the exhibits and animals. Congrats to all the winner (including my WW News Book and “Hills Beyond Whitewater Creek” book. Irene Wendalyn (Chinook) and I went to Friday’s concert. It featured 3 music groups, all were great especially “Reckless Kelly”, Suppertime we ate at the 4-H booth. We had hamburgers, pie etc. Saturday in the morning, Ir...
