Did you get a bite of the World’s Largest Hamburger? It was nearly a quarter of century ago that dang near the whole county came together at the Sleeping Buffalo Resort. Made a run for (and won!) the title of World’s Largest Hamburger in celebration of Milk River Wagon Train's 30th year of travel and the 70th year of the Sleeping Buffalo Resort We got to talking about all the stories of revelry and misadventures that have traveled our slice of the Hi-Line week in conjunction with Labor Day weekend in Phillips County. Between Saco Fun Days, the...
Dear Editor, I had hoped that this letter would not have to be written but the problem at the nursing home does not seem to be going away. The need to spend county money is all caused by one man, Governor Gianforte. January 2022 I met with the Governor's people and asked for help since Medicaid was only paying about 60% of the cost of keeping residents in the nursing home. The normal rate was 95%. Almost all the department heads in Montana are from out of state, and I thought they had just made a mistake that is easily fixed. They said it could...
I’ve packed out a lot of critters in my time, elk, moose, deer, antelope, and bear among them. I recently had the opportunity to add another species to that list: hadrosaur. A duck-billed dinosaur that roamed these parts during the Late Cretaceous period, the remains of this one were found just north of town a few years ago. By the time I arrived at the site, the tail section of the hadrosaur was encased in three plaster jackets, ready for transport to a museum in Florida. First, however, t...
Late “Get Well” wishes to Steve Young who returned to Whitewater. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Harms on the birth of their new baby girl! She has a big brother Alex at home. Baby is a little “Penguin” as mom Cassandra works at Whitewater School. Good Luck and God Bless to Fred Allery Sr. who moved to Billings to the home of his daughter Susie. It is so sad that the Hi-Line home is closing. Bobby Anderson of Whitewater has been living there, and now may have to move with his daughter, Pam. Go...
I’m so happy the Goldfinches are back. I’m not sure where they went but my sunflower seeds are ripening now so the gold and black birds are taking advantage of them. Cindy Clark has a new puppy! Tula is a border collie, and she is very busy! Cindy and Ryan took a drive to Turner on Friday with a flywheel. Tula rode along also and was very good in the pickup! Cindy and grandson Ryan had lunch at the Turner Bar. They reported that it was delish! Porcupines are traveling through the area also. How...
We have not had any rain but more hot days and some quite cool nights. We quite often have our first frost around Labor Day. Days are getting noticeably shorter too. Fall weather is here! Sunday the wind was vicious all day. Dee Shettel was in and visited with Dora Henry one day this week. Cheryl Ames and Linda Vulk, daughters of Dora Henry, visited over the weekend. Velyma Broadhead and Polly Solberg both have beautiful sunflowers ---some of Velyma's are as high as her eaves. Terri Cole was in...
Acts of kindness sometimes go unnoticed by the general public. Yet the recipients know and are blessed. I once observed an act of kindness that I have never forgotten-a kind and tenderhearted act. It was at a healing ministry’s conference where the priest leading the conference was praying for the sick. That day’s session was drawing to a close. Many had come forward asking for prayer. And one by one he laid hands on them and prayed for them. People were still standing in line when the priest suddenly announced, “I’m sorry, but I am very ti...
Dear Editor, The Hi Line Retirement Center is being closed. The CEO of the Hospital and Clinic says there’s no funding, however, he found money to hire 5 new PA’s and started renovating the clinic. It seems like smaller renovations and 2 or 3 PA’s would have been sufficient and the rest of the money given to the Nursing Home. Instead of closing the Nursing Home and getting rid of our Seniors, let’s get rid of the CEO from South Dakota and get a Malta person with a HEART and COMPASSION. The Nursing Home has been open for years. It is home to...
Dear Editor, I’ve heard some real disappointing stories and I was wondering what you know about the Hi-Line home and our hospital / doctors office? Is, or was, the census at the Hi-Line up near 40 residents recently? Is the door that used to connect the home and the hospital emergency room closed off now? I have seen 2 ladies pushing a gurney through that door and they were running. The patient didn’t have to wait for the ambulance or pay the expense, and the patient was tended to quickly. When my father, my mother and both my wife’s paren...
My friend Smoke has started referring to me as a “cooler.” Like the unlucky individuals employed by casinos to “cool” the action at the gaming tables when someone gets hot, I’m apparently the guy who slows down the hot fishing and hunting. Both headed rapidly downhill shortly after my arrival in Phillips County. I moved here primarily because of the hunting opportunities. The grouse and pheasants were plentiful. Elk and antelope tags were easy to draw. There were deer everywhere. Now the birds...
Marriage is about trust. And let’s just say that I had issues with that the other day. Last Wednesday, (August 17) was our tenth anniversary, and my wife and I agreed to not buy anything for each other, for the first time in our relationship. I make it a point not to forgot our special day so that I don’t end up like those television husbands that come home empty-handed. Every year, we would say not to buy each other any gifts, but this year, we actually did it. Well. Kind of. We did not buy...
Again, Smokey the Bear says, “Beware of fires.” I can’t believe it’s the middle of August. Happy Birthday to all celebrating. School started here in Whitewater on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. There is no school on Fridays, so school is a four-day week. When I went to school, it did not start until September, after Labor Day. We had school five days a week. There is one new teacher for this school year. (I’ll get name and more information on school soon.) Good luck to Hannah Hanley (WHS 2022 grad...
Wishing all the county school-age kids a great learning experience this year! Welcome to the newest resident in Loring, Lyla Harms was born on Friday to Casandra and Levi Harms! She is the sister of Alex Harms. The farmers are harvesting what crops they have and hoping to at least make their seed back for next year. Cindy Clark spent a few days in Great Falls with her daughter and son-in-law. She was able to attend some of the Russell Art Show. Chris McMullen entered the BBQ competition in...
Polly Solberg was visited by a nephew and his wife, Joe and Barbara Schafer, of Richland, South Carolina. They are traveling in a motor home and have been on the road for two and a half months, having started out on Memorial Day and have made it home now. Thanks to Bonnie Lankford for mowing boulevards on Thursday. She did the whole street; the help was appreciated and was a surprise when I stepped out and it was all done. Richard, and Tammy (the former Solberg) and Luke Singler of Staten...
(Note: News was intended for the August 10 PCN edition.) Ripp Anderson celebrated his 2nd birthday on August 3rd! His Grandmother Penny Lipp (Bri's Mom) drove over from Havre to help celebrate along with the rest of the family members. My apologies to Shea Anderson’s mother whose name I sent into the news incorrectly last week. Her name is Dawn Ruby. Pam Anderson Dring was in Malta for a few days from Maryland last week visiting her parents Bobby and Pat Anderson at the Hi-Line. Hadely, Nate Anderson's daughter from Malta visited her friend S...
There was a 50th class reunion in Whitewater on August 9, 2022. Dinner was served at the North 40. Carol and Gene Brown, Janet Brown (my sis), from Billings, and her children were with her. It was good to see them all. We had a nice visit. Before returning home, they visited the farm where Hills now live. Others attending the reunion were Debbie Carlson of Washington, Tina Pelke, and Cynthia Swartz. The 107th PC Fair was last weekend. It was a real success in spite of the buildings which were...
School is starting for most of the county's school-aged children this week! I hope everyone has a great year! I spent a few days in Billings with my son’s family and Debbie. Brandie and I took Rocco to Bozeman to stay with Jake and his family for the weekend. It was a pretty drive and Jake and Jazel were great hosts! Brentton, Abby and Zayden, Jeannie and Zoey, and Debbie joined us for dinner on Thursday. The temperature was really up there even at night. But on Saturday a nice torrential r...
Danny, Ree, Lynn, Eunice Simonson, Margie, and Allie Olsen, and Aimee Salvesen were in Malta one evening to visit with Mike and Rae Naas a couple from North Dakota. The Nass family is related to the S.A. Simonson family and the Evelyn Murdock Hanson (Lyle) through their grandchildren. Related two ways!! The couple thoroughly enjoyed Glacier Park while driving through western Montana. A narrow strip of land was hit by rain but many saw and felt the wind and dust storm that passed through prior to coming from the west, north, and sometimes every...
It has been hot again for the last several days and we have had less of the very hard winds that we were having. There has been a little moisture for which we are thankful. As we read our paper this week school will see its first day for this fall being held. Please watch for children as they will be appearing on the streets again. Friends of long-time community resident Brenda Nessland were sorry to hear of her passing last week. Her funeral was last Friday at the Lutheran Church in Malta....
In your travels and jaunts around town, have you noticed the beautiful display of flowers and the barrel tubs that are in bloom? Have you slowed down enough to enjoy some of the creative arrangements – blossoming and gracing yards? Thank you to all those who perk up the neighborhood, and thank you for being part of the welcome messages to those traveling, visiting or passing through. You make us proud, thank you! Maybe I spoke too fast, as some of you must not have gotten the message to take pride in our community. A slow drive around town also...
I fell in love with Montana when I first arrived in Cooke City. I was 18. Nestled high in the Beartooth Mountains just north of Yellowstone Park, Cooke was miles from anywhere. The closest town, Gardiner, was more than an hour away through the park. Red Lodge, the next closest, was a long drive over the Beartooth Pass. Cody was just a bit more than 80 miles away, but the road to get there was still gravel interspersed with sections of dirt two-track. It felt very remote. And still does. Maybe...
Sympathy to victims of the flooding down South. It’s too bad they can’t send some water (rain) to us here. It is August! The weather is HOT! It has been 90 to 100 degrees for days. But in a few months, it will be cold and we can complain about that. Happy Birthday to all August birthdays. This includes Sally Austin, my son Mitchell Moore, and my granddaughter Challise Young Hoff! Happy Anniversary to all! North 40 Café hosted a Chinese dinner Saturday, 60 or 70 people came to eat. Chef Vinc...
Harvest is in full swing around here. The crops are short but at least there is grain to put in the granary. The weather was very hot with a hot wind but then cooled off on Saturday. Just perfect weather for the Phillips County Fair! I went up to Dodson for entry day and again on Saturday for breakfast and to check out the exhibits. Kudos to the Fair Board for making lemonade out of lemons with the total destruction of all the display areas and grandstand. The area looked very nice. I worked at...
Another successful fair has come and gone. People I talked to said it was good and they enjoyed the exhibits etc. Hope the attendance was up to what was expected. Dora Henry's nephew, Eddie Lee Hanson, and wife Sandie of Lewistown visited Dora on Sunday afternoon. They were up for church in Malta and to check out the fair. It is certainly dry again, but we have been lucky so far on fires. Linda Vulk of East Helena told her mom there was a big fire in a wheat field just west of East Helena and if...
