I was in Havre for Thanksgiving and except for very small piles at corners where they cleaned the streets, it is entirely bare. Lots of water around where the snow had melted. We were not so fortunate. We still have about half snow cover. It is staying pretty cold still-----got up to 42 today but has slipped down to 36 already now. Supposed to get really cold and I'm sure it will make it. The records have said this is one of the coldest Novembers, only about 5 days around normal. The forecast...
Last month of 2022, that year zoomed by! I guess it speeds up as I get older. I hope everyone has a safe and blessed Christmas! Cindy Clark and I went to Malta on Monday to pick up some things we might have forgotten for Thanksgiving dinner. We went to see the festival of trees entries at the Phillips County Museum. The entries are very impressive! I hope everyone had a satisfying Thanksgiving holiday! Amanda Hendrix and Matthew Eads of Dickinson, ND were weekend guests for me. Matthew did the...
Moe replies to Gertie's letter Dear Gertie, Charlie's wife was mad as a hornet. "You," she charged, “A pillar of the community, had to go and get yourself in a fix like this. I'll never be able to live this down. I've a mind to go stay with my mother for a while." So she went and poor Charlie ambled over to my house and vowed to keep his nose to the grindstone. He don't feel like hobnobbing with the bigwigs on the city council anymore-not since the Beagle Daily News ran the story complete with headline: City Council member Charlie Camberly A...
I fear organized sports are robbing our youth of their outdoor heritage. What with seasons and tournaments that run the entire school year, and summer sports camps, which fill in the void, there’s little time left for hunting or fishing. I was fortunate to have grown up in a time when sports didn’t monopolize my life, in part because I wasn’t a very talented athlete. But the business of youth sports camps had yet to boom, and the idea of select and traveling teams was in its infancy. In a recen...
It seems that things are finally getting better in terms of my double-eye muscle surgery. Last Monday was intense. I was struggling pretty bad throughout the first week of recovery. My eyes were so dry and irritated that I couldn't keep my eyes open for long amounts of time. After not being able to work for a few days after my surgery, I forced the issue on Monday. I have been trained to work through nearly anything on Monday. I believe the only Monday that I may have missed was during the birth...
With everyone talking about the elections, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas shopping, and that dreaded word, INFLATION, we thought it might be fun to look up what was going on in Phillips County in November of 1942. Trafton-Dorr was advertising a new Lay-A-Way Plan, which was described as “a small deposit to hold any Garment until you call for it at Christmas time.” Some garments advertised included White Elk Sno-Shoes for Women ($3.25), Misses ($2.50) and Children ($1.60), and “Suzette Snip-it Slips”, priced at $2.25, and Men’s Uni...
The Wapatau Center served a good Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday in-house, and it was well attended. It was very cold, but everyone seemed to enjoy the social companionship and the good food. Terri Cole left for Billings early Thursday morning. Polly Solberg left for Billings on Thursday also. The end of the week saw slightly warmer temperatures with the sun making it through the maze and less wind. Thanks to the unsung angels (Bonnie and Jerry) for clearing my walks and car. Hope to get the...
I had the best time watching those eastern bluebirds this past week. They have all taken off for warmer areas and I hope they stop again another year. Congratulations to the jamboree girls North Country for winning third place. Brytin Clark played from here. Now the high school teams are practicing and soon they’ll be competing too! Tina and Chuck Russell are the proud grandparents of Malcolm. He’s a month old and Tina is soaking up all the snuggles she can. Congratulations! I spent the wee...
Editor’s Note: Due to the Post Office being closed we didn’t receive the WW News until Wednesday, Nov. 16, and we had already sent the paper to the printer. Nov. 16: Greetings from the North Pole! Early Merry Christmas! Whitewater has about 4 inches of snow. It is so cold, last night, it was below zero! Winter started early. However, it will warm up and melt the snow as dry as the earth is. How about the election? The Democrats did well, I’m glad. Congratulations to the Whitewater Pengu...
Gertie replies to Moe's letter Dear Moe, Upon receipt of your letter,I thought it best to inform you immediately of the latest Cornburg happenings. Cousin Obie is on the lam. It happened thisaway: Sigurd Olson opened his store one morning to find the safe wide-open and the cash all gone. Nothing else in his General Merchandise was missing. He didn't have a clue when he called our erstwhile town cop but Deputy Backwater had a notion-considering that the front door's key was in the lock. So he hied himself over to Sigurd's house where he found Si...
The weather finally changed. I should have written about it sooner. It seldom fails. Pen a column lamenting the endless days of clear skies and balmy temps, and by the time those words reach print there will be a change. Just days after writing that column I found myself standing in a cold, steady rain in Livingston watching my grandson in goal for the Park High Rangers soccer team during a Class A State semifinal match against Whitefish. The Rangers won in a shutout but lost the next week to a...
I have to admit that I wasn’t as ready for my eye surgery as I thought! Last Tuesday, I went under the knife to fix my lazy eye, something that I have had since I was born. I had a surgery to help it when I was in high school, but a person typically has to go through a couple of them to correct the eye. I admit that the surgery isn’t life or death but it is annoying as a reporter or person when I try to make eye contact and a person looks over their shoulder, as if to gesture “is he looki...
The cold has sure stayed in and is breaking records for this date all over. It is an awful lot of snow on the ground too and they predict more. In some places, the snowfall has been more in the low places than it has been in the mountains. The town has been quite quiet----maybe because of the bitter cold. We wish all having a birthday or an anniversary best wishes and congratulate each and every one of them. Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark----you know...
Oh my goodness, you loyal readers, you won’t believe this! I’ve been watching five little birds for nearly a week now. At first, I wasn’t sure what kind they were, the sunlight makes it harder to see the color. But they are eastern bluebirds! Yes! I’ve tried to get a good photo, but just can’t get close enough to get a good one. They roost in the eves of the roof over the deck, all cuddled together. I certainly have been blessed by these colorful birds! The North Country Mavericks earned th...

As written by Moe to his sister, Gertie Dear Gertie, Old Charlie went on a toot last week; he got hisself thrown in the hoosegow. And me along with him. His wife warned him about those speak-easys on easy street. But Charlie, being Charlie, paid no attention to her. She told him,“If you end up in the slammer, I'm not going to bail you out. You can stay there until the cows come home as far as I'm concerned." Waking up in there along with Charlie,I had a humdinger of a headache. That rotgut they served there sure had a kick to it. What a n...
The weather on the opening weekend of the general hunting season surprised more than a few folks. Hunters fled camps when snow collapsed their tents. Others awaited rescue after their vehicles got stuck in the mud. The storm, which had been forecast for a week, dumped snow in the mountains and rain on the prairie. What were they expecting? It’s hunting season in Montana. Get a clue. The first hunting camp I worked was deep in the Beartooth Mountains. After setting up the camp we left a young w...

It has been such a change, but we have definitely changed from the very hot to the very cold. The new track is looking very nice, now if it just stays that way till spring when the grass starts growing. It should be better now that it has been raised and refinished. Things have seemed very quiet lately--must be the weather. Pickles has her yard all picked up and looking so nice. The rest of us should be so ambitious. Ava has been cleaning hers also after they got her sewer connected. The girls...
The moon is waxing at half-moon tonight! It will be growing until it is full. The bright light close to it is Jupiter. So pretty! The Mavericks are in the divisional tourney at Culbertson this weekend! So far, they have played very well! Cindy Clark and I went to Havre on Tuesday for an eye appointment. I need a driver after I’ve had my eyes dilated, and Cindy seems to enjoy it! A special garden fairy dug up all the gladiolus bulbs at Casandra Harms! What a nice thing to do! I certainly e...
It’s time to put some logs on the fire. And then the time changes, Bah Humbug! Before you know it will be the holidays. Royce Strobbe (Lacey Beil’s girl) and Whit Ozark (Walter and Billie Sky) won All-around buckles at the Go Getters Rodeo. They are this reporter’s great-grandkids. Hector Douglas-Murdock, Kathy (3), and Noah James came to visit GMA Pat this week. Noah turned 1 on Oct 24th. Margie Olsen celebrated her birthday on Nov. 1. She had several visitors and special guests come from Idaho. Her grandson Kenny and wife Callee Brain...
Apparently desperate times call for desperate measures. Montana Supreme Court candidate James Brown (not the King of Soul) has recently started warning us that President Biden is coming for our jobs and our guns. It’s a tired refrain. Someone has been coming for my guns as long as I can remember, and I still have them. I’m tired of waiting. I don’t think anyone is actually coming. But for all the redneck gun owners out there who have little grasp of history or who haven’t been paying attenti...
VOTE! Election Day is November 8, 2022. GO VOTE!! Sympathy to Lu Besel and family of Whitewater. Her sister Carol Williams (Dan Williams) of Landusky, passed away. Congratulations to the Whitewater Penguins Cross Country runners, including Shelby LaBrie. Volleyball season is almost over, then basketball season will begin. On October 19, Whitewater School had a concert that was very nice and well attended. This week school was out Thursday and Friday for teacher training. There was an auction in...
Thirty-seven of my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren came from all over to honor me with a 90th birthday party. This was a day I sincerely thought I would never see. The only down of that day could and quite unexpectedly only be the terrible first winter storm of, the season. Winter was definitely here. It was very nice, and I thank all the people I have known for so long for coming to wish me well and for all, the cards, etc. I received. On Sunday the town council and Mayor Aroch...
The northern lights were really bright one day this week. Of course, they could have been out every night, but I just saw them once! I met an old friend in Malta for lunch on Thursday and gave her a tour of the museum. She loved it! Cindy Clark treated us to a movie at the Loring Hall on Sunday evening. She has a projector, so she put up black bags on the windows, wrangled a screen, and made popcorn with butter! I counted 18 people at the movie in their blankets or special chairs. The movie was...
