  • Wild Game in the 40's / Pittman Robertson Tax

    Jan 18, 2023

Dear Editor While traveling the highways between Saco and Malta, you can't help but notice all the antelope on the north side of the highway. I was thinking about them, and the game we have now and what I can remember as a boy in the 1940s. There were no deer. There were no antelope. I never saw an antelope where I was raised south of Saco until the late 40s, maybe even 1950. I have no idea if antelope came down from Canada, in the hard winter of 49 and 50, I know I never saw them, there weren't any deer either. The BLM land in South Valley...

  • Barb Says It All Has To Go

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 18, 2023

My wife tells me I need a special counsel. Apparently, she’s fed up with all the documents I have stored in the basement of her office. She insists a special counsel is necessary to move all of my important papers to a Dumpster in the alley. I’m pushing back. This is important stuff. Since entering the newspaper business in 1985, I’ve kept a lot of paper. Boxes of newspapers, photographs, correspondence, and media guides are stored neatly in the basement of the old telephone company build...

Some of you know I am an individual of few words, quiet, and hard to engage in a conversation with. Yet, here I am, working with the capable and accomplished staff of the PCN. Thank you to all who have reached out with text, email messages, cards and letters as to my working within this capacity. There are those of you who have stated it took me a while to “find my niche” – my “calling” as it has been stated. It was a long way around to get here…I believe this was my fourth, if not fifth, time for applying at PCN. (Whew, you were spared!) Ju...

Sympathy to all the flood victims in California and other places. Get well to Pat Murdock of Whitewater. She was in Billings but is home now. Sympathy to the family of Annaleise Harms who passed away in Shelby. She was a resident of the Hi-Line Retirement Home until it closed. It is sad how many residents of Phillips County had to move from the Hi-Line. Whitewater has 2 visitors. They are coyote hunters from Maryland and Minnesota. They came a long way to kill coyotes, who are almost starving...

We have had a week of fog and therefore frost! It makes some pretty designs! But it also plays havoc with the power lines. The longest the power was off at my house was 1⁄2 hour. I know that some people were off a lot longer than that. But kudos to the Big Flat crew for finding the problem quickly! I took a chance that the roads were clear on the way to Turner on Monday for Nellie Cedarburg’s funeral. The roads were fine, and the few places that drifted in had a good track that I could fol...

STILL STAYING COLD --was thawing good in Havre on Friday. Was hoping it would make its way down here. Again, Thank You to all the good-hearted elves that seem to keep my path from door to road cleared. Never seem to see you but please know you are very much appreciated!!! Polly Solberg was in Havre on Friday and visited friends, etc. at the nursing homes. She visited Betty Munson who was recovering in the nursing home and was moving to the Hospice. We are all saddened to learn on Sunday that...

I saw a bald eagle having some venison lunch this week (roadkill). It surprises me how the carrion can be found in very little time. My golden retriever had a date with the groomer this week. He looks so nice with his new do. I’ve had him for almost 3 1⁄2 years now. He loves snow! He just burrows his head into the banks and rolls or just lays in the snowbank. These furry friends sure do keep a person entertained! The weather has been nice for January! Not much wind, no new snow, and tem...

  • We Still Hold Cowboys in the Highest Regard

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 11, 2023

When Barb and I moved to Malta from Bozeman 17 years ago I jokingly told people I was moving back to Montana. Bozeman, like many places in the state had begun to look like everywhere else in the country: same stores, same housing developments, same traffic jams. It also was a place of economic vitality. There were jobs and opportunities to make a living there. Barb and I, however, didn’t need that. We could work online, and brought our jobs with us to Malta, where, unlike Bozeman, the economy w...

  • Just a Part of Our Small Town

    Kari Green, Karis Corner|Jan 11, 2023

Fifteen hours left to drive to their home in Minnesota, a family of six stopped along the Hwy 2 at the DQ for a quick bite. They had been over to Whitefish where they have a cabin, spending the last three weeks skiing and enjoying family time. Ah, now wasn’t that just a warm and melt your heart little sharing. If you would like, here is where we met up with them. The family had ordered and were using the restroom, stretching their legs, and merely waiting to head down the road. *Since I never introduced myself, nor did they to me, I’ll jus...

Sympathy to the flood victims everywhere. Again, Happy New Year to all! Did you watch the “Rose Bowl Parade” on TV? Awesome how there are so many beautiful flowers, especially blooming roses to make floats, when here in Montana we have so much snow and cold temperatures! In Whitewater there were many guests at our lovely Christmas Eve service. This included Jean Greens children and grandchildren. They were Serena Venables son, Kyler, also Merissa Wahls children. Curt and Janice Reichelt wer...

  • There Aren't As Many Hunters

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 4, 2023

Even in Montana where we like to think of hunting as part of our heritage, there aren’t nearly as many hunters as there once were. That doesn’t bode well. Hunting license sales account for about two-thirds of the funding for Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Montana is third in the nation in percentage of hunters at 21.1 percent behind South Dakota at 24.1 and Wyoming at 22.7. Montana, however, does top the nation in firearm ownership. According to a 2020 report by the Rand...

  • In the Still of the Night

    Kari Green, Karis Corner|Jan 4, 2023

Did you ever have one of those days when something comes over you and gives you a nudge or feeling? I used to have those “feelings” that made me leery of things. I left work at 6:15 p.m. Monday evening and as I left several vehicles with flashing lights were approaching me and then turned toward the fire hall. The men were running from their vehicles, leaving little time to make an imprint in the snow their feet were moving so fast. I called my boss at the office and told him the fire crew was headed out – if he was needing a space fille...

  • I Have to Brag About my Boys

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jan 4, 2023

I learned something from both of my sons over the last couple of weeks. The first lesson came from my four-year-old son Lincoln. Lincoln is a very observant boy. He catches things that I often overlook. One week, Lincoln was unable to attend preschool because he was sick. Susan, my wife, stayed home with our youngest son from Monday to Wednesday. Then came my turn to take care of Linc. I was stressed out about work and it made it hard for me to enjoy my time with him due to me worrying about wor...

December 28. Christmas has come and gone for another year. Very cold and then it started raining, so got slick all over. I went to Havre and the Messiah Lutheran Church had a nice Christmas Eve Service led by Marilyn Henry. It rained on Monday and some on Tuesday. Bill brought me home Tuesday and when he returned to Havre it rained hard from the river bridge to Chinook. Different ones reported rain in other places from Missoula and on East and North. Temps made it to the high 30’s. The trains we...

People have to be tough in Montana when it gets so cold. I won’t mention the number - cold is cold! Jamie and Jacob Obie’s son Landon Scott was baptized in Whitewater on Christmas Eve at the Whitewater Lutheran Church before the Christmas Eve Service. Also, Mary Beth and Sam Funk’s son Wyatt Ole was baptized at the same service. The grandparents of both children are Pat and Scott Anderson of Whitewater, who were in attendance. The other grandmother of Landon Scott is Kathy Obie, formally of Whitewater, who was also present, along with her o...

Happy new year, everyone! I hope all of you have the best new year! Lumsdens and Blunts had a snow party on New Year’s Eve day! The Lumsden girls and their families were all here. Pete had the horses hitched up to a sled and everyone enjoyed the rides! It was down at Alberts and if you’ve ever been there, you know how steep the hills are! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw all these little people at the top and sledding down! A big bonfire was going and other than myself and the famil...

I give to local food banks and the Salvation Army. Happy New Year to All!! It is January 2023! Happy Birthday to all who are celebrating. This includes Pattie Young. • Moe & Gertie: Continued Correspondence

    Betty Munson, For the PCN|Dec 28, 2022

Moe replies to Gertie's letter in the 12/14/22 PCN Dear Gertie, I'm sure enough in the doghouse now. I finally got up enough nerve to ask the new schoolmarm to go to the dance with me. When she said she would,I got myself all duded up in my new pants and yellow checkered shirt;slicked down my hair, splashed on some bay rum,put on my new shoes and took off. I had a flat tire two blocks from my house, got it changed and two blocks later the radiator went kerfluey. I left it there and hobbled onward. I was lookin' kinda frazzled when I got to her...

  • The First "Real" Montana Winter in a While

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 28, 2022

I experienced a disturbing moment during the recent cold spell. While outside shoveling the sidewalk a few days ago in -27 degree weather, I realized that I was quite comfortable. I wasn’t too cold or too hot. My hands weren’t aching. My face wasn’t even covered. Perhaps I’ve lived here too long. Of course I was shoveling out of the wind, which a couple of days earlier had cooled things to a relatively chilly -72, but it was straight up -27 nonetheless. Winter seldom loses focus up here, a...

Here it is. 2022 is about to tie up any loose ends and call it a wrap. There are those among us who are wondering what happened to 2022, oh where did it go? Yet there are as many contemplating…can this year just move on and start a new year fresh? As you snuggle next to your fireplace or crawl under those electric blankets attempting to ignore the blasted cold out, it is still a good time to think about the new year and new beginnings. WELCOME 2023! Well, perhaps in a few days, with the exception of some distant readers who will get this g...

Sympathy to all the people and animals everywhere who are out in the freezing weather. Here in Whitewater, there were basketball games with Dodson. (I’ll let the sports writers report scores and logistics). The National Anthem was sung by Samantha Wisher with her beautiful voice! She is so talented. Lunch (tater tot casserole) was served. There was a very large crowd in attendance. Our Whitewater folks always support the schools. On December 20, 2022, there was a Christmas program. It was v...

Happy new year to all my readers! An Irish blessing says: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. At least the temperature has gotten warmer! We had some record-breaking cold for the first day of winter! The windchill was -72 for a short time! We have a nice amount of snow, not too much and not too little! Many of the...

  • Response: Predators

    Dec 21, 2022

Dear Editor and Readers, Apparently, Mr. Heinlein isn't too impressed by the role Predators play on the elk and deer population. The only knowledge I have over him, with what they can do to the deer population, is what I can remember as a boy in the 1940s. There were no deer. My granddad shot the last deer he saw in South Valley in 1907, and the next deer that was seen on the old home place was 1948, the next year, either 1949 0r 1950 the FW&P opened a 3 day season, bucks only. By 1951-52 I got a chance to hunt myself. By 1955, a hunting...

  • I always wished of a White Christmas

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 21, 2022

Growing up in southern Indiana I always wished for a white Christmas but seldom saw one. Snow, when it did fall, never lasted long. Then I moved to Cooke City where it can snow every month of the year. By Christmastime there the snow is typically measured in feet. A white Christmas is a given. Not all of Montana, however, is so lucky come the holiday season. I remember a December in Bozeman that started out white, but was brown and bare by Christmas. That won’t be the case this year. More t...

It is sad about the pipeline gas leak in Kansas. Here in Whitewater, it is cold with lots of snow. It will be a “White Christmas”. (I prefer it brown). The children/students are practicing for programs at school and at churches. Note: Whitewater Lutheran church has Christmas Eve Church at 4 p.m. There will not be church Christmas Day. Whitewater Baptist Church has church on Christmas Day at 11 a.m. Dallas and Ashely Green went to Minnesota. They also visited Dale Green and family. Con...
