We have seen lots of water from the warmer sun and the winds that blow every day. It has been quite nice but the next five days are to be very cold again and some places are to get quite a bit of snow. Our winter just gets longer and longer. At least it stayed a little better while the tournaments were on, so they had some relief. The teams really played their hearts out. Polly Solberg went to Billings Thursday to visit her son Tim, and family. Robbie Bear was in town for a couple of days...

Sympathy to all victims of hurricanes or tornadoes. It is very sad. Back in Whitewater, we do not have hurricanes or tornadoes, (at least not severe). We do have snow and ice and really cold weather. But it is getting better. Now we have a Chinook wind. The snow is melting! Think Spring! Tuesday evening, there was a pep rally at WHS for our teams going to tournament. It was a large group and supper was served. Good luck to all players. The Penguin/Mavericks, girls’ and boys’ basketball team’s to...

Here are some ideas about stress that I found in a farm paper a while back. Have a laugh if you can. Here are some great ways to deal with life. When you come home from work don't bring it home with you. Never put both feet in your mouth, or you won't have a leg to stand on. Accept that some days you are the pigeon, some days you are the statue. If you lend someone $20 and never see them again, it's probably worth it. When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane. Some mistakes are to much fun to only make once. Always keep your...

  • PCHC Update from CEO Tharp

    Feb 15, 2023

Dear Editor, Healthcare is an ever-changing system and PCH has had to make changes to ensure that we are meeting the needs and demands of our community. Over the past couple of years, in the midst of a global pandemic, PCH has remained dedicated to our mission of making a difference in healthcare. Many hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes continue to fall victim to financial shortfalls and are faced with challenging financial decisions and PCH has been no exception to this. Working together with the PCH Board of Directors, we have developed an...

  • I've Been Lucky Enough to Have Seen a Few

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 15, 2023

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks inform me regularly when lion hunting season closes in each district. I don’t hunt mountain lions, but I like living in a state where I could if I wanted. And I like knowing they’re there. I used to think lions in Montana were limited to the mountainous regions of the state, hence the name, but I’ve since discovered that’s not the case. Shortly after moving to Malta, I was hunting antelope on public land south of town while Barb waited in the...

We had a week of much warmer weather----getting up into the 30s and 40s and one day inched past 50 for a short time. It did settle the snow in several places but we still have lots in all the yards and on the streets. It's supposed to go back to the 30s and less this week again. We did see a little activity during the warmer days, even some people looking at available houses. There was Bingo at the school on Sunday. We lost another long-time resident on Friday with the passing of Al Minugh at...

How about that huge Chinese balloon floating over Montana and Billings, Montana? That’s where Janet Brown and her family live. What a crazy world. Here in Whitewater, there were basketball games with Scobey. The gym was packed with friends and family. Samantha Wisher sang the National Anthem with her beautiful voice. Taco soup was served. There was an auction. It was a fun time for all. Congratulations to Joan and Howie Hammond of Whitewater on winning an award for their farming and ranching. I...

GOOD JOB Mylee Clark and Amus Blunt! Thursday Dixie Stordahl invited Cindy Clark over for supper and a gab session. Very nice evening for both. • Two Bills Pertaining to Minors are Going Through Legislature

    Feb 8, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing to you to inform the public on two bills protecting kids that are going through the MT legislature right now and need urgent attention. For those constituents of Representative Casey Knudsen, I ask that you contact him, let him know you are his constituent, and ask him to vote yes to HB234. This bill will remove public schools from an obscenity exemption clause. Currently if you provide obscene material to kids on the street, you will be in legal trouble. If you are a teacher or librarian inside a public school, that...

  • Daines Condemns Biden, Senate Democrats' Inflation Crisis at Senate Leadership Press Conference

    Feb 8, 2023

U.S. Senator Steve Daines today delivered the following remarks at the weekly Republican Senate Leadership press conference condemning Senate Democrats and President Biden for recklessly spending trillions of dollars and creating record-high inflation for Montana families. “Senate Democrats joined President Biden in greenlighting these multi-trillion dollar, purely partisan spending extravaganzas over the last two years. “In fact, even Democrats from the Obama administration warned that if this legislation were to pass, you would have inf...

  • Isn't This What the Space Force was Created For?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 8, 2023

I was sitting on the patio at the lake last summer enjoying the sun when I noticed an object high in the sky to the north. It was roughly the shape of an oval with a bright, shimmery border. It wasn’t moving. I blinked and shook my head, sure that it was only a floater in my eye, but when I looked again it was still there. Barb was inside the cabin and I was reluctant to call her. She is a firm believer in UFOs, Sasquatch, and the like. She remains convinced the odd little critter we spotted a...

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Feb 8, 2023

The weather and the world are staying about the same. It stays cold and we still have most of our snow. I have always enjoyed winter but think I have changed my mind this year. It has finally warmed up enough that we are seeing some water at the edges finally. The teams played some hard games on Saturday with Poplar and unfortunately lost the games. Sorry, you played hard. Polly Solberg went to Havre on Thursday and while there visited several old friends at the nursing home. Polly Solberg and...

It is February 2023, time sure flies! “Get Well Wishes to Dallas Green and Jeanie Green. However, Jeanie can’t stay sick long, as she is lambing. They are so cute. I used to raise bum lambs on a bottle, what fun! Here in Whitewater, we have so much snow, if it melts we may have a flood. We will wait and see. The chief topic in Whitewater is basketball. Our Whitewater Penguins/Mavericks are still rated #1 in the State, in Class C basketball. Good Luck to all teams. Cindy Clark, Pastor of Lor...

Oh, the temps are spring-like! We’ve had a few days with 40 degrees plus, so the snow is melting a little. The banks have a crust of ice and when the sun hits them, the glare is shocking! My driveway is pretty icy so if you come to visit, please be careful! Cindy Clark and I attended the ball game in Whitewater on Friday! It was a full afternoon! Two junior varsity games, boys and girls, senior night, and two varsity games. The Mavericks won the two varsity games over Scobey but lost the JV game...

  • Operation Christmas Child Update for Malta

    Feb 1, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing to thank Malta-area residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Generosity throughout contributed to a successful shoebox gift collection season at drop-off locations for the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child. Across the U.S., the project collected over 9.3 million shoebox gifts in 2022. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2022, the ministry is now sending nearly 10.6 million shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Through...

  • Winter is the Great Equalizer

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 1, 2023

With all the snow this winter it’s getting hard to tell who’s new to Montana and who’s not. Almost everything’s covered. That lump in the snow might be carefully planted shrubbery or it might be a pile of old tires. Only spring will tell. That expanse of the snow-covered yard may well hide a groomed lawn of exotic grass or just as likely, an untended dirt patch sprinkled with dog droppings. Winter, with its accompanying blanket of snow, is the great equalizer. To an extent. Large, ostenta...

Sympathy to the family of Mr. Zimbelman. He was a teacher in Whitewater for years. There were basketball games in Glasgow on Saturday, January 29, 2023. Whitewater Penguins/Mavericks girls won again and are rated #1 in the state. Congratulations to them and to the boy’s team and all the players. There were also games in Malta which included the Malta Mustangs! I went to watch the twins Seth and Jonathan Siewing. Congrats to them all. Here in the Whitewater area, the ranchers are busy hauling h...

Mercury is visible in the morning just before sunup! It is so close to the sun that it isn’t visible very much! We had nice weather with thawing for most of the week. Then the arctic cold hit again, with wind! But no new snow. The snow has packed down and is quite slippery. So be careful everyone. Blessings and prayers for Matt Norville as he goes on tour with the National Guard. He deployed on Sunday. Carmen and the girls were in attendance. Cindy Clark was on hand to cheer her granddaughter M...

  • Senater Bill 72 Could Change Local Water Management

    Jan 25, 2023

Dear Editor, Legislation under consideration in Helena on water use and water rights could negatively impact the economic future of Montana family farms and ranches. Senate Bill 72 makes sweeping changes to Montana water law, directly targeting our local district courts’ supervisory authority over local water commissioners. It replaces our current functioning system and centralizes control in a new, permanent Water Court with expanded powers over water rights enforcement. Controversial provisions in this bill create a new opportunity for w...

  • American Prairie: Giving Back to the Community

    Jan 25, 2023

Dear Editor, “What does American Prairie do for the community?” As the organization’s Senior Outreach Manager, and a Lewistown resident, I’m grateful to reflect on that question at the start of a new year. First, American Prairie is part of this community. The same number of employees live in Fergus and Phillips Counties as in Bozeman – and this number will grow. Seven of us reside in Fergus County along with our partners and spouses, kids, parents, and even grandparents. We own and rent homes, send our kids to school, shop local, and volun...

  • Winter Refuge in a Another Town

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 25, 2023

I finally gave in. Admitted I was tired of the snow. The endless winter. The unrelenting cold. But while many of our neighbors seek refuge in the Arizona desert once winter tightens its grip on Phillips County, Barb and I felt no need to leave Montana. Balmy Livingston is good enough for us. We bought a small house there on a quiet street, and while Malta remains home for now, we’ll probably eventually end up in Livingston. We have family there including a dozen grandchildren and another on t...

Here’s hoping you have a warm house this cold snowy winter weather. There was a wonderful birthday party for Patti Young at the North 40 in Whitewater. The party was well attended by friends and family, including Patti’s grandchildren the Andersons. The food was delicious and prepared by family and friends. It included a lovely birthday cake. Happy Birthday to Patti and all January birthdays! Congratulations to the Whitewater Penguins/Lady Mavs on being rated #1 in basketball in the state! Als...

  • Loring News for Wednesday, January 25, 2023

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jan 25, 2023

Day after day of thick fog made some beautiful frost on the trees, but it also made the electric lines heavy and low. The power went out many times in Loring, but just a flash. One day it stayed off for about three hours. We were the lucky people! Lu Besel and I went to Malta on Thursday and did a few things at the museum. It's surprising how long it takes to get the computer up when it hasn't been used in a few months. Cindy and I went in on Tuesday and had lunch with the senior meals at the...

It is still staying cold and looks like no relief for a while. We said goodbye to two members of our community this week with the funerals of Travis Scheffelmaer on Friday and the funeral of long-time resident Betty Munson on Saturday. Betty had a short but very fitting funeral service at the Wilderness Home and then was interned at the Dodson Hillside cemetery. Condolences again to their families. Thanks to the Dodson Ladies who served lunch at the Sacred Heart Hall. It was nice to see some of...

  • Contact Representatives To Assist in Nursing Home Crisis

    Jan 18, 2023

Dear Editor As most of you know Hi-Line Retirement Center in Malta closed early last fall, partly because Medicaid did not reimburse the facility the cost for skilled long term care per resident per day that it costs. At least ten others in the state have closed, with several others just barely staying open unless the state can increase the amount of reimbursement, those will close. Daryl Toews, former state senator from Lustre, Mt. wrote a letter to the Phillips County News the end of August concerning this issue. I wrote to him and he called...
