  • Why Can't We Get Anything Done?

    Aug 3, 2022

Dear Editor, I am writing in regard to the pipeline from Canada to Texas. All the land owners along it went to Glendive in about 2010. That day, all agreed it should be built and was being paid for by Canada, 100%. It included off ramps for U.S.A. oil to be picked up. Also, Big Flat Electric and other power companies were to build power lines. The materials, poles, etc., plus money for right away, some of which Big Flat bought. All is in storage or laid out along all of the right aways. Canada paid all. The Northern Border gas line was built...

  • My Concern is Strictly Personal

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 3, 2022

I’m losing hope. Until about a week ago I remained optimistic that Fort Peck Lake would rise. There was even a span of six days early this month when it did come up a tiny bit. Then it fell again, and although it was only a miniscule drop -- .01 of an inch -- it quit rising for a few days. Since the first of March, the lake level has varied little more than a foot. While news reports documented extremely low water levels upstream at Canyon Ferry Reservoir this spring, late snows and heavy r...

  • Ideas, Thoughts, and Input

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Aug 3, 2022

As you as readers are aware, the strength of a weekly publication is in the readers as well as ads sold. Many people have mentioned and/or approached me stating things they would like to see in the newspaper and there is validity to their thoughts. The public stated they would like to see new ideas incorporated within the folds of the PCN, and I would like to share some of them and seek the readers’ feedback. “When you can be anything in the world, be kind.” What about a place where those who “pay it forward” or do “random acts of kindness” f...

Bet-cha Didn’t Know Life gives us many good neighbors throughout our lifetime. This is a story labeled “They Were Good Neighbors” by Gladys Costello. Two neighboring landowners, one a sheepman and one a cattleman, were on friendly terms, settling their disputes amicably. They both came to Zortman frequently to do a little celebrating. Came a day when they met in Sam Deniff’s Saloon. Both were well on their way to a celebration when the argument broke out. In a flash, each man had drawn his gun and the shooting began. The big back mirror of the...

What a wonderful day for the Sunday Funday in Loring. The sun was shining, and a slight breeze was keeping the temperature down a bit. The people were either soaking up the rays or staying in the shade. The kids were climbing the water slides over and over again, and sliding down as quickly as possible! The food was awesome! Grilled burgers for lunch and pulled pork for supper! The community ladies brought salads and desserts! No church at the Loring Lutheran next Sunday. Walker Olson of...

Kaitlyn Sinnema stopped at Polly Solberg’s on her way to Malta for her class reunion. She helped Polly with some yard work while there. Polly Solberg went to Havre on Friday for a reunion of the Billmayer family and to honor Susan. She was able to visit with several old friends from the north country. Very hot temperatures were in attendance most of the week. Very little moisture----a couple of very short showers. Dora Henry's daughters Cheryl and Linda came to spend a couple of days visiting a...

  • This American-Made hammer brings me back!

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jul 27, 2022

Though I have had the same hammer since I was 13 years ago, I am far from a handyman. I do have to say that I have had a streak of fixing things around the house. One wouldn’t think that putting together a kitchen table is hard to do, but I definitely can complicate a simple task. I did get it set up! After I found my rhythm, I was also able to assemble the six chairs that came with it. One month later. As I was putting together the furniture, I wondered what my sons were thinking. I am g...

  • We are up and running

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Jul 27, 2022

When I was told I would need to write a column for the PCN or a bi-weekly sharing of thoughts, my mind was overcome by the intensity of the responsibility. Personally, I am one to text and share jokes, little clips with positive thoughts, and something that will bring a smile to ones face…I am not so sure placing my thoughts in words for others to pounce on is something I am looking forward to. It kinda ranks right up there with having a root canal or mammogram. I will say this week has been a warm and gentle one; I had told a few friends a...

Sympathy to my friend Irene Wendalyn and her family on the loss of her son Danny. They lived in the Whitewater area years ago. Danny will really be missed. “Get Well” wishes to Kyler Venable who was in a terrible accident. He’s in the hospital in Billings. Jeanie Green is his grandmother, and she went to see him. Nature’s furnace has been on high this past week! The crops are ripening to a golden color. The peas are getting hardened up also. Seems a bit early to me but with the lack of moisture to begin with and then the heat, it happens. The flycatchers have started another clutch of eggs. I was quite surprised to see four eggs in the nest that is on the deck! Those little birds really catch the flies and moths. Good luck to the little momma! This will be the first year two batches hatched out! Lu B...

Susan Billmayer of Turner-Hogeland received an award from the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs at Missoula for her long-time devotion to the Blossoms Club and others. She has devoted her time and knowledge to making things better for over three decades. Congratulations Susan and keep up the good work. We need all the beauty we can get. Services were held for long-time resident Joe Rattey on Saturday. We have had some really dry-hot days this last week. The highest reading that I looked at on...

Celebrating Independence Day always reminds us of those that have given their lives or a portion of their lives to keep us free. The following is a poem that Bryon “Buck” Hurley wrote while stationed in New Guinea. Bryon attended Wagner grade school and graduated at age 15 from Malta High School. In 1940 he joined the Army and had specialized training at the Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco before being sent to New Guinea. On July 30, 1943, he was killed in action on Roosevelt Ridge in New Guinea. He was posthumously awarded the Purp...

  • Bowdoin Waterfowl Refuge, now just foul

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 20, 2022

There seems to be a bit of confusion out at the Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge. Apparently the folks in charge there – if anyone is -- thought the state’s Clean, Drain, and Dry program didn’t pertain just to boats, but to the refuge as well. However, while the Montana program is an effort to combat aquatic invasive species, the feds appear to have taken it to another level, rendering the refuge inhospitable to nearly all species except livestock. The place has been logged, burned, graze...

  • Why can't I just take the win?

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jul 20, 2022

I know that I am about to jinx it. I know that I should probably just take the win and be quiet about it, but I can’t help myself. I have lived here a while now and I must say that this has been the most pleasant year for a certain pest that I won’t name. Year after year, I have gone outside to set up my sprinklers only to be mobbed by biters. I would swat and stomp every step as I set up irrigation. We wouldn’t have picnics outside due to these buzzing creatures, and a walk around the neigh...

In Loring we had two really big storms this week. The rain fell, the wind howled, branches cracked off, the shingles flapped! According to my resource, we got one inch and two tenths in Loring. Up on the Bench, the total from the two nights was 2.25 inches! It’s all welcome! Last week I ran into an old friend of mine in Glasgow! It was so fun to see Billie Jo and her husband Wayne Norcutt! Have a great summer! Jeanie Green celebrated the 4th of July with me at lunch. That evening I watched t...

  • Maybe river bottom homes need stilts

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 13, 2022

I grew up in southern Indiana a few miles from the Ohio River. From a high perch in the oak tree in our backyard, I could see Kentucky. Nearly a mile wide inside its banks, the river would flood every spring covering thousands of acres with muddy water. A levee kept the Ohio out of town, and hardly anybody lived in the floodplain. There were, however, a number of river camps scattered along its banks. They were all built on stilts. I didn’t know anyone who owned a river camp, but I always f...

  • I am finally able to put my feet up after work!

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jul 13, 2022

So, we did a thing the other day…. I’m not talking about marriage. I am talking about something that has been in my life just as long as I have been married. My old couch set. The other day, Susan and I replaced our old couch/love seat set. Honestly, it took me a long time to like that couch. It was not comfortable at first. It did not recline, so the naps were often painful, and sitting on it too long encouraged me to get up and take a lap around the house. I disliked that couch for years, but...

Vacation Bible School at Malta Lutheran was a focal point this week for several families in this area. Cindy Clark helped lead the gospel lesson and took her Grandkids in to attend.
