Happy April! We had a mini blizzard today. I guess Mother Nature doesn’t want to let go of her power yet! I’m so thankful for the moisture! But the amount of snow up here could cause problems if it melts too fast. Last week I said I saw a snowy owl. This week I saw two snowy owls hunting gophers! It is so easy to capture them with the snow. I usually hear the meadowlark song in March but haven’t seen one or heard one yet. I’ve seen many hawks, a bald eagle, and many little birds that fly in...

  • I Wasn't Aware that These Were Local Issues

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Apr 5, 2023

I must be out of touch. I had no idea that transsexuals, and concealed firearms were the most important issues facing me and my neighbors in rural Phillips County. I would have thought the closing of the local retirement home -- one of seven shut down last year across the state -- or perhaps rail safety, would top the list. Maybe a general lack of rural health care or failing infrastructure in Montana’s small towns might pique constituents’ interest. But no. Apparently we’re more conce...

  • Response: A Few Thoughts on Bullying

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Apr 5, 2023

Competition can bring out the best and worst in people. But we need to be better. I need to be better. I get fired up! Not in a super aggressive, call anyone out of their name, fired up. My fired up is a roar at the top of my lungs, fist pump, jump out of my shoes fired up. Most times, I cannot celebrate or cheer like I want to during sporting events because I am supposed to be neutral and not draw attention to myself. I am supposed to use restraint. It is hard to not display any type of emotion...

Sincere sympathy to the families of the latest shooting. Horrible. When are we getting gun control? Back in Montana-sympathy to the family of Ben Math, who passed away recently. Ben was a farmer/rancher of North Whitewater, until his retirement, then he moved to Fort Peck. Ben’s son and daughter, Deb Anderson, live north of Whitewater. Here’s some good news, a new arrival for Mr. And Mrs. Kenny Reichelt of Colorado, a baby boy. Congratulations to them! Kenny was raised in Whitewater and the bab...

  • Adults In Our Community Bullying A High Schooler

    Mar 29, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing this in response to the adults who think it is okay to make negative comments on Facebook and in the classroom about a student athlete. First of all, my grandson is a wonderful young man and he does not deserve this kind of bullying. Every one of these bullies do not even know him or anything about him. I called Malta Schools twice trying to get on the agenda leaving voice mail with the superintendent but my calls were never returned. I believe the two junior high teachers who made comments on Facebook and comments in...

  • How Can Anyone Be Critical of That?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 29, 2023

From the first day that hunters were allowed to harvest bison that wandered out of Yellowstone National Park there have been protests. A bison advocate jabbed a hunter with a ski pole that first season. Others chained themselves to a gate, hoping to disrupt the hunt. Negative publicity eventually prompted state officials to limit the hunt to American Indians, with only a few permits issued to the general public. It appeared to be a wise move. Indians have hunted bison for thousands of years,...

  • The Shoe Being on the Other Foot

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Mar 29, 2023

I better start off by saying that I now have a deeper appreciation for those with the courage to be interviewed by myself or any other member of the media! For the past ten years I have interviewed local coaches, athletes, and others around this great county, and seldom have I been the subject of an interview. That changed for me a couple of months ago as I had the chance to tell my life story on Live Under the Big Sky at KLTZ F.M. Radio in Glasgow. My friend Georgie called me about the...

Sympathy to the victims of the floods in California and all over. Greetings from Iceland, ha-ha. You cannot believe how much snow and ice we have in Whitewater, drifts are 18 to 20 feet high! Thanks to Jason Hellie for driving his snowplow on streets and my yard. We had several years of real drought, no crops at all. Maybe this snow will change that cycle, hope so. Also, good luck to the ranchers feeding cattle and now calving. Hope they have barns. The weather all over Montana has been hard....

I’m not sure how we’ll handle all the moisture when the snow starts to melt! I know I have no say, but melting slowly for a while and then running off into the pits and dams! Whatever happens, it’s ok because we are so thankful to have a white winter this year! I saw a snowy owl last week! The first time this year! I enjoyed the Firefighter’s hamburger/fish fundraiser on Friday! Then I went up to the Event Center to visit and check out the agriculture displays! I haven’t been in a few years so I...

Our weather has been cold and nasty every day and temperatures are never very high, but we did not get this last snow that some of the state did. I think spring ran away and hid on that first day. Velyma Broadhead and daughter Anita Manns returned from their trip to Mexico, and after a couple of days to Joliette, have been home. Anita is staying with her mom for a few days. Polly Solberg met the train on Friday to greet their niece and family who came from Minnesota for a few days. They are...

  • The Greatest Place on the Planet?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 22, 2023

Wow! Another accolade for Bozeman. Now, according to Time.com, it’s one of the greatest places on the planet. That information appeared on my facebook feed -- surprise, surprise -- compliments of a real estate agent. Bozeman, like most every other town in the state, had already been included on a plethora of lists: best mid-size city in the U. S., top ski town in the West, favorite spot for trust-funders to pretend to be locals, etc. And it is a swell place, but greatest on the planet? Why n...

We are Number 1, Whitewater Penguins/ Mavericks, and Saco/Hinsdale Girls Basketball team are number one in the state. Wonderful and congratulations to all participants in all the tournament teams. Also, congratulations to the band, coaches, staff, and parents who helped in any way. Many fans went to the championship game in Billings. This included Curt and Janice Reichelt. They met Julie (formerly Austin) and her new husband there. They went to games and visited Janet Brown in Billings. Back in...

Happy Spring equinox! I spent the weekend in Billings, and I really felt like spring was on the way! There was very little snow to be found. But up here it’s a total white landscape! If we get a slow melt, the water should soak in and provide enough soil moisture to grow the crops! If it melts quickly the ponds would get filled which we need also! Monday morning, I woke up to a very thick fog so according to some people we’ll have a nice rain in 60 days! Or 90 days! A shout-out to Pete Lum...

Thanks to all the little elves who help me. Bringing mail/lunch, clearing my sidewalks, and checking on me. You are special and much appreciated. Tim and Heidi Solberg of Billings helped Polly Solberg home on Thursday, stayed for Connie's gathering on Saturday, and went home on Sunday. Thanks to Tim for bringing all my mail to me on Friday. Tim sent a picture back to Polly's camera, that Billings had a 54-degree temp. Velyma Broadhead had dental work done on Friday. A get-together with Connie...

  • Hoping to Avoid the Atmospheric River

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 15, 2023

Leaving Malta, a couple of weeks ago, headed south on vacation, we managed to slip between storms sweeping the country. Except for a stretch of snow-covered highway through Island Park, Idaho, we had dry pavement all the way to the desert. I doubt we’ll be so lucky on our return trip. The atmospheric river which I had been hearing so much about this winter is still raging. We’re on the edge of it and we’re nearly in Mexico. Somewhere between here and home, I suspect we’ll have to cross it, but...

Sympathy to all shoveling deep snow, like in California. We Montanans are more used to tough winters. Most of Whitewater area went to basketball tournaments in Billings. Congratulations to the North County Mavericks and all players on the team! Some folks also went to games in Great Falls, to see the Mustangs and the M-ettes. The Whitewater School band got to go to the Billings games, congratulations. The band adds so much. Also, congratulations to our own Samantha Wisher who sings the National...

March 8: I am home! Eleven days in Florida were packed with activities and adventures. My host, Fran Compton, spoiled me rotten! I loved it! First of all, I flew into Fort Myers, stayed overnight, and met Sophia Stiles for breakfast. What a wonderful visit! From there Fran drove to Lake Placid where she lives but first, we stopped at a fresh fruit stand! I couldn’t believe all the delicious fruit and vegetables were displayed! So many kinds! We picked some oranges, bananas, star fruit, b...

It is still staying cold and miserable and over the weekend we had one of the worst storms of the winter. It snowed and blew hard from the east and dumped about eight inches of snow on the two feet or so that was already there and after the winds arranged it in drifts where there had not been drifts it was a lot of snow to get moved. Then there is a large water break that is wasting a lot of water downtown and is flooding quite an area. The community was saddened with the death of lifelong...

  • We'll See How Long it Lasts

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 8, 2023

Barb and I are enjoying a closeness while traveling we hadn’t experienced before. We’ll see how long it lasts. For the past 30 years we’ve fled Montana in March seeking warmer climes. It used to be Florida, a five-day road trip with a boat in tow. Now it’s the desert Southwest, a much shorter journey, with nothing in tow. We’d always driven a pickup or SUV on our escape from the frigid North. This year, however, we’re traveling in Barb’s Mini Cooper convertible, a cool car, but certainly mor...

Editor’s note: This week’s news is from Helen Austin’s book “Whitewater School.” Chapter 5. Slumber Party in the Blizzard The north wind howled and blew icy snow into high drifts along the banks of the tiny Whitewater Creek and into the schoolyard where classmates, teachers, and I were trapped overnight in February of 1950, because of the worst blizzard in Montana history. A blizzard which created a night to live forever in our memories. The day began like others, cold, with softly falling s...

We have had several little storms so we are back to normal----deep snow and little ground showing. Only one week to daylight savings time and one more week to the first day of spring. I still think that big old Robin Red Breast was lost!! Polly Solberg went to Billings on Saturday----to visit Tim and family for a while, and I think she chose the right day---to beat the storms. Everyone seems to be staying pretty close to home, would be easy to get stuck in the streets. Nice to see and visit...

  • My Truck is Already Big Enough

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 1, 2023

I’ve got most of the gear on the list of required stuff to call yourself an outdoorsman in Montana. But like that line from an old Meatloaf song “I won’t do that.” “That” in this case being a customized grill guard for my pickup. My truck is already big enough without a cow-catcher hanging off the front like a locomotive. I carry a Leatherman on my belt, have a bone saw in my pack, and wear a neck rag when it’s cold. I’ve owned horses, drift boats, and a Honda Trail 90. I’ve never owned a grill...

Also, congratulations to all those celebrating anniversaries. To Sue Olson, glad you are feeling better. Also get well wishes to Marjorie Olson. Both Sue and Marjorie farm and ranch near Whitewater. Final congratulations to the boys and girls Whitewater Penguins/Mavericks who played basketball in the Divisional Tournament held in Glasgow. The girls took first...

  • Iowa Man Recalls Camping In Malta, Act of Vandalism

    Feb 22, 2023

Dear Editor, Here at Marble Rock, we have a volunteer monthly newspaper. Our circulation is approximately 400 and is sent free to everyone with a 50653-zip code. I am writing you since I write an article each month, mostly about our history. Sometimes I cover personal stories. The one this month mentions Malta, Montana. My wife and I were in our early 20’s and we decide to take a vacation to Glacier and Yellowstone. We didn’t have much money, so we were camping. It was nearly dusk when we pulled off to stay overnight in Malta. By the time we...

  • I'm Glad I Got Out Last Week

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 22, 2023

Winter started early. The snow that fell in November is still here, hidden under all the snow that’s fallen since. Another storm is on the way, promising more snow and a third bout of sub-zero cold. I’m glad I got out last week. It was barely below freezing with only a slight breeze. Inside the spearing shack it was warm enough to take off the gloves. Spearing fish is much like deer hunting from a stand: long periods of inactivity abruptly interrupted. One minute it’s hard to stay awake and t...
