We’ve had a few days of gentle rains this week so the prairie is really greening up! Cindy and I took a drive to a secret spot that grows certain wildflowers and we were not disappointed! The hillsides had plenty of crocus and yellow bells. I’ve seen them as early as April 9, but this year the land was still under snow cover. I then drove a little further and saw some American avocets along with some ducks in a slough! It’s nice to see the water and shorebirds! Our community has been rocke...

Whitewater lost a long-time resident. Sympathy for the family and friends of Bill Murdock, he will be missed. Sympathy to the firefighters and victims of the fires in Alberta, Canada. That’s where my grandchildren live. Here in Whitewater, school is almost over for the year. The Seniors are anxiously waiting for WHS graduation. The 2023 grads are Kora LaBrie, Kendra Cummings, Hunter Ellis, and Samantha Wisher. The eighth-grade class is Mylee Clark and Kenan Hammond. Congratulations to all of t...

  • The Lake Waters Continue to Rise

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|May 10, 2023

The water is back. Following years of drought that dried up much of the state, an exceptional winter snowpack appears to have turned the tide. Every stock tank and ox bow up here is brim full. I may even have a lake house once again. For two years the water in Fort Peck Lake has been dropping, so much so that the bay upon which my house sits began to more closely resemble a ditch. Since the first of March, however, the lake has been rising steadily, up nearly four feet already, and the snow in t...

  • At Long Last... Ag Day

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|May 10, 2023

On Friday, March 24th, Ag Day was held for the first time at the Event Center, which is the old National Guard Armory on the south skirt of town. The space provided ground level access and those with displays and tables filled the area to the walls. Colorful displays and customer handouts were all on display for those making the rounds. Agricultural entities as well as businesses from across the Hi-Line brought the people through the doors. Several banks, the museum, real estate agencies, wildlife and nature business, and military/homeland secu...

Springtime means the return of the songbirds, branding, sorting cows, mowing the yard, and activities like music festival, track meets, recitals, etc. Everett Blunt was in his first recital on Sunday. He was able to play in Nancy Murdock’s group of students even though he takes lessons from Carol Lumsden. I’m sure he performed well! Paige Wasson and Kennedy Simonson were the kids from Loring to compete in the State Music Festival with the Whitewater group. They earned superior ratings and jus...

  • Every Brilliant Thing Showing This Friday at MHS

    May 3, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter because I am very over the top about this play, EVERY BRILLIANT THING. The play will be presented in Malta on Friday, May 5 at 6:30 in the high school auditorium. When it came to town a few years ago, I “just happened” to become involved because I housed the actors in my home. Wow, what a great thing to have happened to me. EVERY BRILLIANT THING, is a powerful and timely play that shines a light on all the things that make life worth living. I promise you will not be bored while you will be learning new...

  • Our First Long Walk of the Year

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|May 3, 2023

I got out with the dogs last week for our first long walk of the year. A couple of us are showing our age. I limp a bit more than I used to, and although I didn’t think it possible, Ace has gotten even slower. Never a fast dog, Ace has paced himself his entire life. It’s served him well. With the exception of a slower gait and a graying muzzle, you’d never guess he’s almost 12. I think. He might be going on 11. A middle dog, he always slipped under the radar, hunting behind older, better-trained...

    Pat Murdock, PCN Correspondent|May 3, 2023

Evelyn (Murdock) and Lyle Hanson’s three girls, Cindy Hanson, Lori Haugen, and Joni Lynn from North Dakota traveled through very bad weather to come to Montana on Friday to visit relatives. They went to visit cousin, JoAnn Hammond and family and Aunt Ree Simonson on Friday. They enjoyed dinner with many cousins. Saturday, they enjoyed having tea at the Murdock Homestead where their mother grew up with Aunt Pat Murdock and Therese. A large group of cousins and friends gathered at the North 40 for a family reunion and to celebrate Cindy's b...

What a delight to listen to the Whitewater students at the spring concert on Tuesday! The elementary classes sang songs from Broadway and the older students performed their pieces from the district festival! Very fun to listen to! Cindy Clark and I went over to the carnival in Whitewater on Thursday. I played Bingo and visited and had a good time! I won two times! Mylee Clark, Samuel Simonson, and Gracie Wasson were the Loring kids in the track meet in Malta on Saturday. They all did great!...

The family of Evelyn Murdock visited Whitewater recently. There was a school concert at the Whitewater school on Tuesday. All the music was very good. Sommer Green sang Shenandoah, which was very beautiful. Many students are in various sports. Rory Green plays golf in Malta. The track team is getting in shape. However, the tracks in Whitewater and most of the town are too wet yet for track meets. But good luck to all. Some students went to proms in Malta and Hinsdale. The girls wore beautiful...

  • The Drawing Came and Went

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Apr 26, 2023

The drawing for special elk permits has come and gone, and for the first time in memory I didn’t care. Filling out an application for a special tag was something I used to do every spring without fail. It increased my odds of killing an elk, and guaranteed I‘d have an elk license in my pocket come fall, a general elk license being the prerequisite for the drawing. I loved to hunt elk. Over the years I managed to kill 20, evenly divided between cows and bulls. Whether I drew a special tag or not...

We had one more small snowstorm, but it was all gone again after one day of sunshine. They had more in other parts of the state, and the roads were bad. The Milk River has been at flood stage for some time now, we have been under flash flood warnings a couple of times but so far it has not come into Dodson. Farther west it has come out of the banks. Condolences are sent out to Tina and Jack Has The Eagle and family and friends in the loss of Donald Has The Eagle. Always sad to lose someone...

The potholes in the pastures are full! Still have some snow in the coulees and tree shelter belts. And yet it even continues to snow in small amounts! When I was in Havre last week, I stopped to visit my Aunt Theresa Cowan. She is doing well, misses Tim but working through the broken heart! I’ve seen many motorhomes on their way north! Must mean that the snowbirds are coming back. Cindy Clark and Whitney Blunt were models for the Family Matters/Malta Kids Club Spring fundraiser. They both l...

Whitewater Creek is flooding! Mr. Cummings took pictures and there is water everywhere. Recently, the PC Ambulance responded to a call from Whitewater. They took a lovely lady to the hospital. We are glad she is doing better and at home now. The ambulance provides a real service; however, Whitewater should have its own local ambulance service. There is an ambulance here but cannot get anyone to be medics and drive. Maybe there is time and training involved. We are so isolated out here and a...

  • At the Mercy of a Trash Can

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Apr 19, 2023

Technology baffles me. Most of my skills are archaic, involving hand tools and shovels. Like that old Hank Williams Jr. song, I can run a trot line and skin a buck deer, but my i-watch remains a mystery, the fish-finder in my boat is still a work in progress, and Siri haunts me. I’m even at the mercy of a trash can. About a year ago Barb decided it was time to replace our kitchen trash can. It sat tucked away out of sight under the counter where its decrepit condition went largely unnoticed u...

We returned from Billings on Tuesday evening and had rain in places all the way home. We were very surprised at the amount of snow that had disappeared. Then on Wednesday, it rained all day in spurts, finally seeing the sun again on Thursday. On Friday the weather station at Glasgow called to have someone check on a suspected ice block that might cause major flooding. The block seemed to be about two miles west by the Milk River bridge. We were put on an alert for flash flooding for several...

Nothing quite compares to waking up to the spring birds singing! Lots of robins, meadowlarks, red wing blackbirds just to name a few! The melting snow water has slowed down running through my yard. But still plenty of snow to melt. All the low spots are full, and it makes us all smile! I saw six swans flying north on Friday! Rodney and I spent the weekend in Billings. Rod’s daughter, Saige, was baptized on Sunday. I visited my sister, Debbie, and her son’s family and had supper with Bre...

It is spring!! The snow is melted, and we can see bare ground. It’s wonderful, after so much winter! However, be careful while driving or walking, the roads are still covered in some places. Jeanie Green sold all her sheep and dogs. It was sad. Jeanie is thinking about moving to Arizona. She flew to Arizona to look into various rentals. Rent is very high there. She will be back in about a week from now. “Hello” to Irene Wendayln (my friend). She said there was so much snow and now it’s all mel...

  • Now it's Spring and the Melt Has Begun

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Apr 12, 2023

Be careful what you wish for. Following years of drought and rapidly declining water levels we finally got a real winter. Now it’s spring and the melt has begun. It looks like we’ll have plenty of water in our bay at Fort Peck Lake once again. Unfortunately, however, I can’t get there. Lat week the north fork of Rock Creek washed out a culvert on the only road leading to our cabin, taking a sizable chunk of road with it. Until the road is fixed or the ice melts there’s no way in or out. While th...

  • Spring Brings Back a Welcome Perspective

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Apr 12, 2023

As I sit here for the first time in several weeks, the world outside is buzzing. Warmer weather has brought a new look as we begin to experience some run off; the creeks are rising, there are robins and meadowlarks blasting new tunes and excitement for spring! There is something about the subtle changes that bring back memories. The first crocus has brightened the bland prairie and an array on newborn baby calves add freshness to the picture. I have yet to hear anyone complaining about the longer days and bright sunshine. You’ll have to go a w...

Warmer temperatures have arrived and there is water almost everywhere. Beginning to be a little flooding in places. Hope farmer’s reservoirs are being filled up and it all isn't coming where it isn't necessary. There are still a lot of drifts and piles of snow to melt. Holy Week has come and gone so I hope everyone had a good Easter. There were services all over so everyone should have had a chance to share the season with prayers, our Lord, and friends. My son Bill came and took me to Havre, so...

Last year I whined about missing the song of the Meadowlarks, but I didn’t whine this year, because I knew that they would be later! Well, just in time for Easter, I heard the song of the Meadowlark! I have spotted the Slate-sided Junco, chipping sparrows, a gull, a crow, and many hawks! The snow started melting and there is a little water running through my yard! Cindy Clark was host to her family for Easter dinner. I was honored to be included. As I was visiting with Mylee I commented that B...

It is April 2023, sympathy to farmers and ranchers who are calving in this snow, ice, and cold weather. Also, sympathy to the calves and sheep who have endured the weather this long, hard winter. THINK SPRING! Representative Gideon Wesley Koss was out at Whitewater Church Sunday. They raised money to put Bibles in hotel rooms and other places. Jeannie Green sold most of her sheep. She will miss them, won’t you Jeannie Green? Well, I am trying to renew my passport. I only need the small one, t...

  • I Am Definitely a Goonie

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Apr 12, 2023

With the weather warming up ever so slightly, my family has decided to head north. Only for a day. I do not know what I expect to see in Swift Current, Sask., Canada. I know that throughout her childhood, my wife has been there a few times. We have talked about several things that we will see up there, but only one thing really stuck out to me; Chinese Food! Chinese food is a cuisine that I loved growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, but during my college years I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed...

More cold, wind, and snow on Sunday. Typical Spring Easter stormy weather but we've had enough. Please let us see some warmer weather for a while. Dora Henry rode to Havre with son Bill on Tuesday for Doctor's appointment and rode home on Thursday with Polly Solberg and Vivian Bruckner. While there she went to Lenten services on Wednesday at First Lutheran---combined with the Messiah Lutheran. It was a very nice service. I understand there were no trains running on Tuesday so Velyma’s d...
