Question: How do you think the Car Show went? Buddy Walsh: (Dodson): "This was a nice car show here today, a lot of nice cars and pickups from the past. Probably about 90 vehicles here today, so it was nice!" Aaron Oxarart: (Helena): "My first time at the car show, I was very impressed with all the cars here. It's fun to come back and see people and friends I hadn't seen for a while." Issac Walker: (Billings): "I think the car show today went amazing, there's a very large turnout for Malta,...
We had a garage sale last weekend. Twenty years of accumulation since we moved to Malta. Almost everything sold. There’s not much left to donate or take to the dump. Folks snatched up furniture, framed prints, used tires, old tools. A few things didn’t sell: outdated electronics, sketchy exercise equipment, lightly worn boots, and my bicycle. A Trek mountain bike that Barb gave me before we were married, it was my escape from the city when we lived in Bozeman. I could hop on the bike at our apar...
My wife is amazing. Like many other occupations, I can’t always take a day off on holidays that fall on a Monday. This was the case for Memorial Day. I do however try to hustle and get things done so that my staff and I have the option to go home early. This year, I did get things wrapped up early, and was excited to spend time with my family. I entered the garage to find a lot of things in our enclosed back porch were in our garage or on the backyard. I had no idea what was going on. So I s...
May 29: I was so thrilled to be in Loring this last week! Many birds are flying through. Even a Swainson’s thrush which we don’t get every year. Lots of American goldfinches, robins, red-wing blackbirds and yellow-headed blackbirds, Canada geese and ducks galore. My little flycatcher is successful at laying her eggs in the nest on the deck roof! Steven Johannesen had an unfortunate accident and got burned over quite a lot of his body. He is in Salt Lake City at the burn unit, to get skin to reg...
May 29: Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to all who celebrated in May. Get well wishes to Bonnie McMullen and all who are sick. Whitewater has been busy and well-populated recently. There were baccalaureate services at the Whitewater Lutheran Church, followed by graduation at the school. Both ceremonies were well attended. Previously, there was an awards ceremony, followed by a supper. Congratulations to all graduates. There was a benefit for the EMT’s to repair the local ambulance. That was...
Dear Editor, On the evening of May 16, 2024, there was a knock at our door. There stood a young teenager asking if he could borrow our broom and dustpan. Pretty odd request for a young man, about the age of 13 or so. My sister asked him why he needed the broom and dustpan. He said, "He was riding his bike on 5th Street West and dropped a glass bottle of pop". He wanted the broom and dustpan to clean his mess up. So we gave him the requested items and he proceeded to sweep up the glass from off...
It was simply a matter of time. Apparently Montana is too cold for Harrison Ford. Ford was one of the main characters in the “Yellowstone” spinoff “1923,” which was filmed in Butte. However, according to the Austin Business Journal, the show is packing up and heading to a film studio in Austin, Texas. If only all the recent transplants to Montana, lured here by the “Yellowstone” series, would follow suit. Weather used to be one of the major factors in keeping out the riff-raff. Montana was...
Even though I am not living in Loring anymore, the American goldfinches have stopped to visit, and my friends have reported the “sightings”! The soft little chirping sounds are always a joy! Big weekend for many seniors, as they go from high school on to the next step. Congrats to Paige Wasson, Kendall Scheffelmear, and Ava Hanley as they graduate from Whitewater High School. The month of May is always so busy for students! The track meets and golf meets all are celebrations. It sounds like the...
Sympathy for the victims of war. Let there be peace on earth. Congratulations to all the Phillips County graduates, especially our Whitewater seniors. They are Paige Wasson, Kendra Scheffelmear, and Ava Handley. The eighth graduates were Rory Green, Grace Wasson, and Samuel Simonson. There was a carnival at WHS, complete with games, and lunch was served. Fun for all! School is winding down. Soon it will be summer vacation. Congratulations to the Whitewater track team, they have done very well...
“This is home. This community, this land.” “Land is not just a commodity to be bought and sold.” “They own the land and that's a heritage to their family.” “You’ll never be able to replace the land.” “We're just caretakers. [...] It's all going to last longer than we are.” “Land is everything.” These quotations are a sample of what we have been hearing from Phillips County residents as we visit with them at kitchen tables, ride along in their trucks, and listen at their community meetings. We are a trio of social science researchers from...
I’m waiting for one of the political candidates running for office in Montana to bring up an issue that actually affects me. While the mess on the southern border continues unabated, we have no crush of immigrants where I live. I read and hear about male athletes crossing the line to play women’s sports, but that’s hardly a concern here. My freedoms are not being infringed upon. I can legally pack a gun, buy weed, and gamble, although I’m not sure those were freedoms that concerned our foundin...
Dear Editor, Kenny Clark and the rest of the crew that put the Loring Gopher Hunt together was awesome! The food was amazing! It was great to visit friends young and seasoned, even the weather cooperated. The gophers seemed shy and not as curious as usual? When using your Grand Dads old 22 with a 5 shot clip, there was alot of reloading. We had a blast and are looking forward to doing this again. With Great Apprecation, Hiram and Cindy...
I like to drive. It’s how I got here. I left Indiana following high school graduation in 1970 behind the wheel of my 1958 Ford big window pickup. Planning to drive all the way to Alaska for a pipeline job, I ran short of money in Montana, got a job with an outfitter in Cooke City, and thought I’d died and gone to heaven. I sold the pickup that fall to a guy who worked road construction. He wrecked the truck shortly thereafter and it became fill on the Beartooth Highway. After a short stint in...
Happy Mother’s Day to all of you! What an expressive light show the Aurora Borealis put on for practically the whole country! Tina Russel posted pictures of it and her house close to Pensacola, FL. Jana (Wisher) Biddy posted pictures of the lights in Georgia! So, I’m sure they were further south than normal! I did not see them but enjoyed it vicariously through the many pictures posted on Facebook! Congratulations to Casandra and Levi Harms on the birth of their baby boy, Justin Edward. He was...
The two of us are from different political parties, don’t always agree on legislation and actually ran a spirited campaign against one another several years ago. Having said that, we are not enemies. In fact, it’s just the opposite. We are friends that actually get along and work together as much as possible for the betterment of the Hi-Line and those who live and work here. One legislative proposal we both were pleased to enthusiastically support, along with 86% of our House and Senate colleagues, was Senate Bill 442, sponsored by our fel...
Following an aborted hitch-hiking trip to Alaska that ended with a night in jail in Eureka, I found myself in Livingston waiting for a ride to Cooke City where I had work. It was hours before dawn and there was no traffic. I curled up next to my backpack and closed my eyes. The sound of tires crunching gravel woke me with a start. A Livingston police cruiser had stopped just feet away, and a cop, holding the passenger door open, said get in. He drove me a few miles south of town, told me to get...
I may not be alone in saying that this is my favorite time of year in the state of Montana; which is odd for me being that I have always been a fan of the fall season nearly everywhere I have lived. Fall means that my birthday is near. Fall for a couple of decades meant relief from the heat and humidity. Fall means that Christmas is around the corner. I have had a change of heart since moving here in 2012. Most of the winters here have been brutal. And though the lack of humidity here is...
Happy Cinco de Mayo! What a busy week! The main activity in north Phillips County on Saturday was the Gopher Hunt! Kenny Clark reported there were 54 teams registered and more than 6600 gophers met their demise that day! One badger appeared but scampered way back into his burrow as he reconsidered how hungry he really was! The businesses around the county were very generous with their donations for the prizes. Grilled burgers and fresh fries were served for lunch and for dinner, pulled pork and...
Margie and Sue Olsen, along with granddaughter Gray Simanton, went to Malta on Sunday for a fashion show. Sue and Gray were models for the Family Matters show. Brent and Debbie Anderson were in Great Falls last week to attend memorial services for Brent’s cousin Pat Tribby Berg, 83. Pat was another Whitewater native. Royce Strobbe (Jason and Lacey Beil’s daughter), 13, and Jessa Erickson, both of Saco, tied for high point at the kid’s rodeo in Plentywood on Sunday. Rowdy Beil placed 2nd in the 9-13 group. Speaking of rodeos and the upcom...
It is May 2024!!! Here are all upcoming events/activities from the Whitewater School. On May 17, 2024, at the High School, at 7 p.m. will be graduation. Congratulations to all of the students. Tuesday, May 24, 2024, will be the awards banquet. There will be a supper at 5 p.m. and the awards will be at 6:30 p.m. There was a spring concert at the school here in Whitewater. We had beautiful musicians and singing. The band with all the grades participated. There will be a benefit to repair the...
I’m still calling this the Loring News notes but I write about less and less Loring happenings. I guess if you don’t want to know what I’m doing in Billings, you could skip that part. Cindy hosted a tea party on Tuesday as a tribute to Dave and her wedding anniversary. I think it was a wonderful idea and I got to attend via FaceTime! Other tea drinkers were Diana Simanton, Jeanie Green and Lu Besel. The table had beautiful flowers and lots of special treats! My granddaughter, Saige, had a birth...
Beware of all scams! Congratulations to the two new additions to the Wisher family. Connie had a baby girl and Jana had a baby boy. They live in South Carolina. Both women lived in Whitewater. Again congratulations! Baby calves have been arriving daily, most ranchers have all their calves. There are cattle by Whitewater Creek Bridge. Maybe they belong to Howard Berg. The grass is green now so the cattle can eat. However, the ground is so dry. We pray for rain. Recently Paul and Leona came out...
Dear Editor, An article posted in the Phillips County News on Wednesday April 24th, 2024 included an article titled “ New Practitioner Joins PCH Staff”. The mentioned provider, Laurie Harvey, will not be joining the team at PCH at this time. We apologize for this misinformation. Submitted by, Jo Tharp, CEO Phillips County Hospital and Family Health Clinic...
We knew it was too soon, but we wanted to fish. The ice had come off early and the temperatures had already reached into the 70s. Something had to be biting. Right? Not necessarily. We pitched crankbaits, pulled bottom bouncers, and dropped jigs all with the same result. Nothing. Taj Mahal was apparently wrong when he sang “All fish bites if you got good bait.” Fort Peck Lake has a reputation as one of the top walleye fisheries in the nation, but you wouldn’t know it watching us. Me, I could...
Happy Earth Day! I was in college when the first Earth Day was celebrated. I remember some students rode horses to school instead of driving their cars. I mostly picked trash! Congratulations to the musicians from Whitewater School who earned one’s at the District Music Festival! They have earned a trip to the State competition in Billings! I might get to see some of them when they come down. If you are outside in the night, you might have seen a few meteorites from the Leonids showers. It's a...
