July Fourth is an incredibly festive time. Millions of American families come together to celebrate freedom. Across, there will be fireworks, parades, festivities, BBQs, and family gatherings. July 4 th is also America's top beer-drinking holiday, with an estimated one billion dollars spent on beer during the holiday. Excessive drinking or binge drinking is problematic. Statistically, in Montana, 19% of adults over 18 binge drink at least once per month. Holiday celebrations can be particularly...
On Father’s Day, I went fishing and thought about Dad. I don’t think about him every day. I’m not one to celebrate heavenly birthdays or lament his passing at the age of 90 nearly two decades ago. But I always think about him when I fish. He and I fished together often. We didn’t agree on a lot — religion and politics come to mind. Get us on the water, however, our differences vanished and we were best buds. Dad taught me to fly fish. It wasn’t something many folks did in southern Indiana, an...
We are losing too many people to sadness. Like many in our world, I struggle with sadness. I don’t really do or take anything to take the edge off when I am feeling sad or depressed. I like to try to stay grounded in reality and sometimes reality is depressing to me. I try not to judge anyone for what they do to escape their own sadness. The one thing that I do to help deal with the issues going on in my head may seem crazy to most. I try to torture myself through working out early in the m...
I noticed that some of the alfalfa fields and grassy prairie have been swathed. The swaths look pretty big. It’ll be so nice to get a bunch of bales for the winter! The wildflowers are prolific and add lots of colors to the prairie! I’ve heard a couple of orioles this past week. It’ll be the summer solstice this week so enjoy the long daylight! Rod Stordahl drove me to Billings on Thursday for a Dermatology appointment. We stayed until Sunday so we could attend Brentton Stordahl’s marriag...
It has been warm, and things are growing like mad. It is so nice to see everything so green and all the flowers around. We had a little rain again on Sunday, Father’s Day. Thanks to our wonderful neighbors, Glen and Jerry for their mowing. They are certainly helping to keep everything looking better. Dora Henry was so pleased to have a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and two great-great-granddaughters and a daughter visit her for a short visit this week. All are from Kansas except her d...
Sympathy to friends of Lloyd Dionne. He will be missed. Well, I just returned from a great vacation. We went to Joliet, Montana to a wedding celebration for Julie (Austin) Crusch and her husband Marvin. It was a wonderful party with lots of guests, despite the rain. There was a BBQ lunch and wedding cake. I played the piano for a while. Julie, my niece was a very beautiful bride. Congratulations to them. Actually, the party was a real family reunion for the Austins and relations. It was fun! My...
Dear Editor, Every parent remembers the day we took our child to their first day of school. It pulls at your heartstrings. Fortunately, in Montana, we knew our children were in good hands. They were entering schools with teachers who were well qualified and supported, learning lessons from curriculum we had approved, and following the rules set by school boards we had elected. As a mom, a teacher and a legislator, I believe that the work Montanans have done for public education provides a pathway for every child to be their best, for every...
Dear Editor, The Classes of 1960-1969 held their Class Reunions at the Tin Cup on Friday and Saturday June 2nd and 3rd; Sunday the gathering was at the Sleeping Buffalo. Friday evening the food was outstanding at the Tin Cup and the service was good. But there was no water, no coffee, or other drinks. The only way you could get something to drink was from the bar. There were 240 people attending this event. The acoustics were terrible, the only way you could visit was to scream! It was obvious the bar was out to make money and they did! They...
Barb and I spent the morning at the lake catching up on chores. It was too windy to fish. By early afternoon, however, the wind began to lay. “Let’s go fishing,” Barb said. I was in the boat at the dock rigging a couple of rods watching her walk down the hill with an insulated bag of food and drinks when I noticed an ominous bank of clouds approaching. “Let’s wait this out,” I suggested, and we headed up the hill back to the house. By the time we got there big drops of rain had begun to fa...
As many were beginning to awaken on a fine Wednesday morning, the Volunteer Fire Department was already making their rounds and erecting the colors of our nation – red, white & blue – beneath the silvery stars before the full splendor of the awakening of dawn. Yes, old Glory is being celebrated on Flag Day, June 14th. On the 14th of June in 1777, Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that our flag would be 13 stripes alternating red and white; that the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. The...
Vivian Bruckner took Polly Solberg to Great Falls for medical treatment on Thursday and they spent the night with Sid and Merrimae Solberg. Polly had lots of company on Saturday, as Larry Solberg, Ruby Butterwick, Evan Jones, and Paul Mortenson called on her during the day. Everything is green and grows so fast with all the rains we have been having. That and all the flowers blooming are so nice if only the blooms on the flowers were not destroyed so fast. I have pink and yellow roses and lots...
To the PETA, “Professional and Ethical Treatment of Animals and SPCA, and other organizations. Please stop cruelty to baby calves by branding, dehorning and other operations. There must be other ways. Now there are psychedelic ear tags, so they can be seen at night! (Put brands on ear tags). Also, why dehorn? That is horribly cruel. Why not raise Montana longhorns? Texans made a fortune by raising longhorns. Branding is more of a tradition than a necessity. Here in Whitewater, the weather has b...
Newscasters come and go in today’s world of scandals. But do you remember one of the most famous duos of the NBC TV network? If you guessed Huntley and Brinkley you would be correct. The senior member of the team was Chet Huntley, who was born north of Saco, went to a country school there and attended public school in Saco. Huntley was proud of his heritage and never failed to mention his Montana roots and that he was a native of Saco. The school which he attended (Huntley School) now sits in the town of Saco and is open to visitors. Please s...
Dear Editor, With all the checks and balances ingrained in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, it is incomprehensible how one election is totally destroying the foundation of our very successful republic. Wayne Hage, in his book 'Storm over Rangelands', extensively documented how the eastern industrialists coveted the natural resources of the western states and since the 1880's had been using the federal government to keep these resources out of the hands of the western settlers (i.e. forest reserves, retained mineral rights, etc.)....
They say money doesn’t buy happiness. Apparently it doesn’t buy fish either. I own a fishing boat with all the bells and whistles. It has three motors, sonar, and GPS. There are a dozen rods in the on-board locker, drawers filled with every lure on the market, and a live-well big enough to hold me. There’s even a retractable yard stick to measure all those fish I don’t catch. Before I could afford such a craft, however, I fished out of more modest boats and caught more fish. My most successful t...
Sympathy for the immigrants and homeless people who have no place to go. Sympathy to the family of Terry McMullen. He was raised in Whitewater. Ray McMullen was his brother. Bonnie McMullen was his sister-in-law. On Memorial Day, some went to the Veterans Parade and BBQ lunch in Malta. Others went to the lake (Nelson Reservoir). The water is high enough to go boating, but probably cold for swimming. Sleeping Buffalo pools were full too. Memorial Day we remember all those who died, especially in...
This week has been wonderful with all the special birds I’ve heard and seen! A red-headed Flicker, which is similar to a woodpecker, flew into my trees one day. An oriole was singing away in my Cottonwood tree early one morning along with house wrens, kingbirds, robins, and meadowlarks! Plus, one day in the museum I got to visit with several birders from around the country! My friend Fran left on Friday on her way to visit Gene Compton and then on to Seattle to get on the ferry for the trip t...
No writing made it into the paper last week, so we'll start again. The main item last week was the lady attacked by the Pit Bull. Haven’t heard anything but hope she is doing well. Memorial Day has passed one more time. The cemeteries looked good although it looked like there were fewer flowers around as usual. This could have been caused by all the rain showers----we put ours down in the rain! My daughter said she guessed she wouldn't melt. Our condolences to all who have lost loved ones l...
Happy Birthday greetings to all who are celebrating in May! The Whitewater Community attended the funeral of Bill Murdock on Tuesday. It was held at the Milk River Pavilion. Lunch was served following the service. Bill was a lifelong resident and will be missed. Whitewater graduation was last Friday. It was well attended with many out-of-town guests. A silver tea followed. Congratulations to all grads & the 8th-grade class. Sunday was Malta’s graduation. Jon and Seth Siewing graduated as well as...
Rena and Bob Math attended the 50th anniversary of Janet (DeMontigny) and Darrell Collier on May 18 in Medicine Hat, Canada. Wes and Marlene Anderson of Seattle, along with their son, Bill, who flew in from Jordan, Israel, attended the funeral of their cousin, Bill Murdock. Bill Anderson has been in the Air Force. He now lives in Colorado. Therese Taylor is in Arizona visiting her son, Jacob, and daughter, Madison. It has been 80 to 110 degrees. Debbie Anderson and Ilene Robinson drove to Pine Hurst, Idaho to the wedding of Debbie’s c...
It’s nearly June and I haven’t been in the water yet. There was a time I never would have let that happen. On the news yesterday I saw it was supposed to be 95 degrees in Paducah, Ky. I used to work at a marina near there, and when it was that hot I would start my day in the water, cooling off with a dip before opening the bait shop at first light. By now I would have been swimming for a month already. My friends and I also made it a point to start skiing in April, the water still cold eno...
Rain! Rain! Rain! What a gorgeous color green! Some reports of 3 inches altogether this last week! The sweet peas and lilacs are blooming, the grass is growing, and the birds are singing! David Stordahl made the trek up to visit. We drove over to Turner Cemetery and stopped at the Turner Bar and Grill. Then we went into Malta to visit relatives there. On Wednesday the Whitewater school held their awards ceremony. Cindy Clark, Carol Lumsden, Patty Pollack, Cassandra Harms, Kelly Wasson and I...
The days are getting longer! Just a part of the cycle around the sun! The goldfinches flew in during the week! I was thankful that I had picked up some sunflower seeds to fill the feeders! They are so brightly colored and their little voices are so cheerful! Also, the flycatchers are busy incubating their eggs! I haven’t checked the number of eggs, but I’m thinking five. The sweet peas are back in abundance also! Big patches of bright yellow all over the hillsides! The smoky skies have been both...
The weather has warmed up so well. It seemed that the trees looked almost dead one day and are now all leafed out and everything is so green. The tulips are drying up already and the iris’ and lilacs are coming out with color. It is wonderful that nature does its own little thing all the time. Dodson celebrated their graduation last week and the rest of the school has another week to go. The community laid three of their long-time residents to rest, with the funerals of Willard Mortenson, R...
