The fog was so heavy early Sunday morning that you couldn’t see a block away and then it moved away a little. Soon it came back heavier and thicker than before, I could hardly see my neighbor’s house. By noon the sun was shining, and it looked pretty good out. It was sure damp all day though. Mary and Doug Fauth of Rapid City, S.D., were here to visit for the day. They have been in Great Falls helping an uncle move into a nursing home and are now renovating his house. There was not much tra...

We have had so many flies, way more than we’ve had in other years. And they really bother the cows too! I’ve only drank two that were in my coffee. Oh, brother, that’s bad now! The temperature has been really cool in the evenings, but it warms up during the day. We had a couple of days of sprinkles. It was really welcome. Loring got just over a quarter inch. I know Malta had much more because there was a lot of puddles. I’m still working on sorting everything from Mom and Dad’s farmhouse...

To the Malta Athletic Club: You have given away enough guns to start a Civil War in Phillips County. Don’t you think it would be more practical to buy the athletes food, the bus gas, and uniforms instead of guns? Here in Whitewater, volleyball, cross country, and football are the present sports. Pat Dunbar’s grandson was injured in a football game. He is much better now. I’m not sure of his name, either Emmitt or Clayton. There was a volleyball game in Whitewater on Thursday. Dallas and Ashle...

  • My House and I Have Things In Common

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 20, 2023

Like me, my house has fallen into disrepair. My eyesight is failing. My teeth are falling out of my head. I can’t hear a thing. I have to plead with my knees every morning simply to get them working. My 108-year-old stone house has similar problems. It still looks good from a distance, but upon closer inspection, there’s a bit of rot to be found, a couple of doors need to be replaced, and the oven in the kitchen is kaput. That’s a big deal. Barb is no longer able to bake, her favorite escap...

The days are very noticeably shorter now and the trees are getting yellow leaves in places, so it is reminding us that fall is coming. Also, our nights are very cool. It all seemed to happen so quickly that we can hardly keep up. The Kirkaldie brothers pulled up with their racehorses just as we were leaving after lunch the other day, so we were able to see some nice-looking horses. Winner’s even. The kids have been out on the course really working on track. Good luck for a good year. Polly S...

This week the weather was nice and warm but cooled off in the evenings. That’s one more positive thing about this area: it can get warm but almost always cools off in the evening! Of course, the wind was still present! I just got back from a wonderful sibling trip to Yellowstone National Park. My sisters and brother stayed in a VRBO near Emigrant. It had 12 miles of really rough mountain roads, but the bunkhouse was very comfortable, and we played a lot of cards in the evenings and looked at o...

She will be missed by family and friends. “Get Well” wishes to Howie Hammond of Whitewater. He is now at the Mayo Clinic. Late Happy Birthday to Rory Green of Whitewater. Congratulations to Somer Green who sang the national anthem at the recent volleyball game at the Whitewater School. You have a beautiful voice, Somer. Sports are in full force. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Courtney Hellie who recently passed away. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her husband and six boys. Sympathy to my cousin Ray and Lois Austin on the passing of their son Christian Austin. He was involved in an accident in Seattle, Wash. Very sad. Back in Whitewater, the air is smoky coming from the fires in Canada. There are fires in western Montana also. Now that school has started, so have volleyball and cross country. Good luck to the athletes in...

Every morning when I look out to the east, I see more and more yellow and gold on my lawn and less on my trees! I’m hoping that when all the leaves fall, I will be ready for winter! Don’t get me wrong, I think the four distinct seasons are important up in this area! Carol Lumsden and I took in the Historic talks at the Phillips County Museum on Sunday. We both felt that the stories were portrayed well! Sympathy to the family of Courtney Hellie who passed away this week. We are all very sor...

  • The First Day of Hunting Season

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 13, 2023

I awoke Sept. 1 way too early. It was the first day of hunting season and I didn’t want to be late. After a quick breakfast I loaded the dogs into the truck, double-checked my gear, and grabbed a mug of coffee. On the drive down I worried that someone would be in my spot, but when I got there of course no one was. Opening day of upland bird season never draws a crowd despite my fears. It was dark yet, and I sat in the truck listening to Ace whine in his box. When it was light enough I f...

  • A New Rendition of On the Street In the Works

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Sep 13, 2023

After countless suggestions, urging and flat out requests, this PCN Reporter will be reactivating an old tradition, formerly referred to as “On the Street.” This one will be more open to those encountered in my travels, so, it is not limited to Malta people “on the street.” The format will be the same, individuals will be asked a question, their picture will be taken and this is where your participation is important. It will only continue with the cooperation of the public. You can rest assured, no one has ever died from answering a questio...

We have been having some pretty good weather-----couple of little showers------a beautiful sunset on Sunday evening. Dora Henry had visitors this week, daughters of Elmer's, Sgt in the Marine Corps all through Iwo Jima and their occupation of Japan following World War II. Vicky and her husband were from Novi, MI, Rosalinda and Cristy from the Chicago area and Heather from St. Louis. It is so nice that their friendship has lasted so long, and they stopped on their trip west. Loretta Nordland...

This saddle she won was on her young horse named Tucker. The second saddle he has won for her. She also races on Salty Dog and Ima Folk Dancer whom she has won saddles. Grandpa Brent and Grandma Debbie Anderson helped Stone (Jace and Shae) celebrate his 3rd birthday. He had a party at the Sleeping Buffalo pool. • It is Nice To Have Someone to Blame

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 6, 2023

When filling up your car at the pump costs more than it used to, and the price of a gallon of milk soars, it’s nice to have someone to blame. Whoever is in office at the time typically catches the heat. But it’s not just D.C. politicians who bear the brunt of the criticism. It trickles down. Way down. John Demarais is the mayor of Malta, a town of about 1,800 people on Montana’s Hi-line. A genuinely good guy who sincerely cares about his neighbors, Demarais catches a lot of flack for thing...

Sympathy for the victims of the tornadoes. That’s one thing we do not have in Montana. Late “Happy Birthday” to all the August birthdays especially to my granddaughter (Challise Young Hoffman) and Sally Austin. It is September, “Happy Birthday to my friend Irene Wendlen in Chinook. It is harvesting time. Farmers are combining grain from morning until night. I see huge farm machinery go by daily. The machines are a lot bigger than they were in the 1950’s. Some are done combining, including...

The weather has still been getting quite warm in the daytime----some nights have been cooler. This week we have been getting more smoke from the fires into the valley. School is in full swing again, so kids are busy. Mac Minugh was in town to visit his kids. The Town had quite a bit of excitement with the bomb scare at the school. There were a lot of responders and they all seemed to be doing a good job. Thanks to all who were working on the situation. Congratulations and Best Wishes to all...

My sunflowers don’t have much seed left, the yellow-headed blackbirds and the grackles took a big share! But the goldfinches still stop in and chatter with their soft voices each day. I had the best time with ten ladies who wanted to paint on Thursday! We painted a fall leaf and a sunflower. There are so many lovely artists in our neighborhood! On September 26 at 6 in the evening, we will be painting door signs with Denise Watkins and Shandell Fouts at the Loring Church fellowship room. C...

  • Handouts and Charity Were Not For Me

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 30, 2023

Shortly after arriving in Montana as a homeless 18-year-old I remedied that situation by getting a job that provided room and board. After all, I had a skill. I could cook. I spent much of that first summer in the backcountry working for an outfitter who took clients on pack trips into the Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone Park. The wages were minimal, but enough that I could pay my own way. That’s how I had been raised. Handouts and charity were for the less fortunate, not for me. But that w...

  • Stepping into September With Veterans

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Aug 30, 2023

The days closing out summer and welcoming autumn will be busy ones of importance to the military. The auxiliaries of the VFW and American Legion will observe some days of recognition and events together and will work earnestly to promote support for our Veterans, patriotism and Americanism. The first day of every month is now being observed as “BE THE ONE” day and the focus is to be the one that is there for Veterans who might be struggling with suicide. September 2 is Victory over Japan Day, the Air Force Birthday is September 18th. The 10th o...

We have been having hot days again, but some mornings are downright cool. School has started again so things seem busier, so watch for the young ones while driving in town. Sometimes they forget to look. Thanks to Bonnie again for being out mowing. She is keeping it looking so much better and we all appreciate her doing this. For the first time, I have been bothered by mosquitos while outside working. The last couple of times we have been to the dumps there have been so many bees, and Wham, one...

Sympathy for the victims of the fires. Be careful with Montana Fires. Get well to all who are sick, including Steve Young. Whitewater School is in session; it livens up the town. It was so different when I went to school. We didn’t start school until September or after Labor Day. Now it begins in August. In first grade there were no school lunches, we took our own. There were no buses, everyone came by themselves. When the lunch program began, the fantastic cook was Gladys Berg. She cooked at W...

On August 30 and 31, we can enjoy a super blue moon! It’s a super moon because it will be closer to the earth, so it’ll appear larger, but not much to the naked eye. It’s called a blue moon because it’s the second full moon in a month. With all the smoke and dust in the atmosphere, the moon will have a reddish-orange look to it. My sister Debbie and my daughter-in-law Brandie drove up to Loring on Friday. We all went to Fort Peck Theater to see the play “Misery”. Brandie hadn’t been to that...

  • Old Man, Old Dog, and Young Pup

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 23, 2023

Nearly seven months after the end of last year’s hunting season -- cut short by an old-man ailment -- I’m ready to go again. At least I think I am. Almost every morning for the last couple of months the dogs and I have walked a brisk mile. At least Ace and I cover a mile while Dot does at least three times that racing through the sagebrush. Fortunately, I don’t have to keep up with her. An electronic collar keeps Dot in check. Ace, on the other hand, is kept in check by his advancing age. Stone...

  • I Think That We Started a New Tradition

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Aug 23, 2023

This past week I was introduced to the Medicine Hat Lodge (MHL). What I didn’t know was that many people around here have experienced this hotel in Southern Alberta, as well as the many water slides in that area. Though my sons seem to be afraid of heights, they had a blast on the two water slides at the MHL. The first day, PJ went on the slides over and over, making a few new friends while doing so. Despite enjoying the smaller slides at other hotels in Canada, Lincoln didn’t get on the wat...
