Folks up here in Phillips County are complaining about a lack of places to hunt. Rich people are buying up all the land. Locals have no place to go. I heard the same refrain when I first moved here nearly 20 years ago. All the good places had sold to out-of-staters or at least out-of-county folk. There were few places left to hunt. I could only shake my head at my new neighbors’ plight, and offer my sympathy. Then I went hunting. I’ve been hunting ever since. Poor-mouthing Phillips County as...
Sympathy to the family of Ron Soennichsen on his passing this past week. Thoughts and prayers to the family. It is October. “Happy Birthday to all! “Get Well Wishes to all who are sick.” Pastor Wisher took a bus to Lewis and Clark Wildlife Refuge to view the elk and hear them bugle. It’s awesome, the elk are majestic beasts. Once, a long time ago, we ran into an elk. It was close to the Missouri River Bridge. The elk was bigger than a cow. Here in Whitewater, we had a storm with lightning and th...
In the spring of 1927, it was estimated that between five and ten thousand horses were running loose in Phillips County. In an effort to improve the grazing for the cattle and sheep industry, the county commissioners created a horse round-up district of about 1600 square miles running from the eastern edge of the county to Bowdoin, down to the Missouri River, and west to the Blaine County line. Jake Myers was in charge of the round-up in western Phillips County while Hugh Simanton was in charge of the eastern section. The roundups started on Ap...
Again, Happy Birthday to all who celebrated birthdays in September. This includes Irene Wendlen (my friend from Chinook). Mrs. Stenvick, Anita Wisher, and others attended a Baptist Women’s Conference in Great Falls. “Get Well Wishes” to Pastor Bob Nagy, who had surgery and is home now. Pastor Steve Schumacher is preaching at Whitewater for now. As a change of pace here’s a chapter out of Dad’s book titled “Prairie Fire”. Prairie Fire My brother, Howard, and I met Dane on horseback the day he we...
My mother, a former high school English teacher, said cussing indicated a limited vocabulary. I never heard her swear. Dad, on the other hand, did swear on occasion, although not in mixed company, and there were certain words and phrases he never used or tolerated from me. I remember being knocked on my butt once after using the Lord’s name in vain. Profanity, however, has prospered since their passing. To a lot of folks, there’s rarely any polite company these days around which it’s impro...
Though I have a lot of respect for the honeybee, I loathe a yellowjacket, hornet, or whatever they are. As you all know, this summer has been crazy for the yellowjacket. My kids, like many on the hi-line, have been stung by these knuckleheads. So I got vigilant, setting a trap approved by Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. This trap can be quite dangerous if used the wrong way. For example, do not put it in an area where your children play, do not remove it until it is dark and cold outside,...
The days are certainly getting much shorter and colder. Friday was a nice day followed by cold and windy on Saturday. Sunday was cold and windy, then we had cold rain. The temps are really going down. Polly Solberg and Dora Henry were in Havre on Thursday for medical and other appointments. Not much activity around with the colder weather. Congratulations to Wendy Hopkins and all having birthdays this week. Best wishes and congratulations to Mark and Sarese Pankratz, Jim and Delores Shettel,...
The first month of the season has nearly run its course. What little green was left on the prairie vanished weeks ago, hiding out of sight over the creek banks. The rest of the country is the color of straw. The recent rains won’t make much difference except to turn dust to mud. Stock ponds that were brim-full in mid-summer shrunk to half their size by the first of September as hot winds blew and the ground cracked. Where there was good soil the grass grew waist high, but on the hard pan, o...
The fog was so heavy early Sunday morning that you couldn’t see a block away and then it moved away a little. Soon it came back heavier and thicker than before, I could hardly see my neighbor’s house. By noon the sun was shining, and it looked pretty good out. It was sure damp all day though. Mary and Doug Fauth of Rapid City, S.D., were here to visit for the day. They have been in Great Falls helping an uncle move into a nursing home and are now renovating his house. There was not much tra...
We have had so many flies, way more than we’ve had in other years. And they really bother the cows too! I’ve only drank two that were in my coffee. Oh, brother, that’s bad now! The temperature has been really cool in the evenings, but it warms up during the day. We had a couple of days of sprinkles. It was really welcome. Loring got just over a quarter inch. I know Malta had much more because there was a lot of puddles. I’m still working on sorting everything from Mom and Dad’s farmhouse...
To the Malta Athletic Club: You have given away enough guns to start a Civil War in Phillips County. Don’t you think it would be more practical to buy the athletes food, the bus gas, and uniforms instead of guns? Here in Whitewater, volleyball, cross country, and football are the present sports. Pat Dunbar’s grandson was injured in a football game. He is much better now. I’m not sure of his name, either Emmitt or Clayton. There was a volleyball game in Whitewater on Thursday. Dallas and Ashle...
Like me, my house has fallen into disrepair. My eyesight is failing. My teeth are falling out of my head. I can’t hear a thing. I have to plead with my knees every morning simply to get them working. My 108-year-old stone house has similar problems. It still looks good from a distance, but upon closer inspection, there’s a bit of rot to be found, a couple of doors need to be replaced, and the oven in the kitchen is kaput. That’s a big deal. Barb is no longer able to bake, her favorite escap...
The days are very noticeably shorter now and the trees are getting yellow leaves in places, so it is reminding us that fall is coming. Also, our nights are very cool. It all seemed to happen so quickly that we can hardly keep up. The Kirkaldie brothers pulled up with their racehorses just as we were leaving after lunch the other day, so we were able to see some nice-looking horses. Winner’s even. The kids have been out on the course really working on track. Good luck for a good year. Polly S...
This week the weather was nice and warm but cooled off in the evenings. That’s one more positive thing about this area: it can get warm but almost always cools off in the evening! Of course, the wind was still present! I just got back from a wonderful sibling trip to Yellowstone National Park. My sisters and brother stayed in a VRBO near Emigrant. It had 12 miles of really rough mountain roads, but the bunkhouse was very comfortable, and we played a lot of cards in the evenings and looked at o...
Sympathy and prayers to the family of Courtney Hellie of Whitewater who passed away recently. She left 6 boys. She will be missed by family and friends. “Get Well” wishes to Howie Hammond of Whitewater. He is now at the Mayo Clinic. Late Happy Birthday to Rory Green of Whitewater. Congratulations to Somer Green who sang the national anthem at the recent volleyball game at the Whitewater School. You have a beautiful voice, Somer. Sports are in full force. Whitewater High School hosted a game on...
Our deepest sympathy to the family of Courtney Hellie who recently passed away. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her husband and six boys. Sympathy to my cousin Ray and Lois Austin on the passing of their son Christian Austin. He was involved in an accident in Seattle, Wash. Very sad. Back in Whitewater, the air is smoky coming from the fires in Canada. There are fires in western Montana also. Now that school has started, so have volleyball and cross country. Good luck to the athletes in...
Every morning when I look out to the east, I see more and more yellow and gold on my lawn and less on my trees! I’m hoping that when all the leaves fall, I will be ready for winter! Don’t get me wrong, I think the four distinct seasons are important up in this area! Carol Lumsden and I took in the Historic talks at the Phillips County Museum on Sunday. We both felt that the stories were portrayed well! Sympathy to the family of Courtney Hellie who passed away this week. We are all very sor...
I awoke Sept. 1 way too early. It was the first day of hunting season and I didn’t want to be late. After a quick breakfast I loaded the dogs into the truck, double-checked my gear, and grabbed a mug of coffee. On the drive down I worried that someone would be in my spot, but when I got there of course no one was. Opening day of upland bird season never draws a crowd despite my fears. It was dark yet, and I sat in the truck listening to Ace whine in his box. When it was light enough I f...
After countless suggestions, urging and flat out requests, this PCN Reporter will be reactivating an old tradition, formerly referred to as “On the Street.” This one will be more open to those encountered in my travels, so, it is not limited to Malta people “on the street.” The format will be the same, individuals will be asked a question, their picture will be taken and this is where your participation is important. It will only continue with the cooperation of the public. You can rest assured, no one has ever died from answering a questio...
We have been having some pretty good weather-----couple of little showers------a beautiful sunset on Sunday evening. Dora Henry had visitors this week, daughters of Elmer's, Sgt in the Marine Corps all through Iwo Jima and their occupation of Japan following World War II. Vicky and her husband were from Novi, MI, Rosalinda and Cristy from the Chicago area and Heather from St. Louis. It is so nice that their friendship has lasted so long, and they stopped on their trip west. Loretta Nordland...
Kathleen Murdock won another saddle, her fifth, in barrel racing at Gillette, Wyo. in the 2D group (over 60). Kathleen lives in Kadoka, S.D. This saddle she won was on her young horse named Tucker. The second saddle he has won for her. She also races on Salty Dog and Ima Folk Dancer whom she has won saddles. Grandpa Brent and Grandma Debbie Anderson helped Stone (Jace and Shae) celebrate his 3rd birthday. He had a party at the Sleeping Buffalo pool. Ryett Anderson turned 9 and celebrated with Dad and Mom (Jett and Brianna) and brothers in...
When filling up your car at the pump costs more than it used to, and the price of a gallon of milk soars, it’s nice to have someone to blame. Whoever is in office at the time typically catches the heat. But it’s not just D.C. politicians who bear the brunt of the criticism. It trickles down. Way down. John Demarais is the mayor of Malta, a town of about 1,800 people on Montana’s Hi-line. A genuinely good guy who sincerely cares about his neighbors, Demarais catches a lot of flack for thing...
Sympathy for the victims of the tornadoes. That’s one thing we do not have in Montana. Late “Happy Birthday” to all the August birthdays especially to my granddaughter (Challise Young Hoffman) and Sally Austin. It is September, “Happy Birthday to my friend Irene Wendlen in Chinook. It is harvesting time. Farmers are combining grain from morning until night. I see huge farm machinery go by daily. The machines are a lot bigger than they were in the 1950’s. Some are done combining, including...
The weather has still been getting quite warm in the daytime----some nights have been cooler. This week we have been getting more smoke from the fires into the valley. School is in full swing again, so kids are busy. Mac Minugh was in town to visit his kids. The Town had quite a bit of excitement with the bomb scare at the school. There were a lot of responders and they all seemed to be doing a good job. Thanks to all who were working on the situation. Congratulations and Best Wishes to all...
My sunflowers don’t have much seed left, the yellow-headed blackbirds and the grackles took a big share! But the goldfinches still stop in and chatter with their soft voices each day. I had the best time with ten ladies who wanted to paint on Thursday! We painted a fall leaf and a sunflower. There are so many lovely artists in our neighborhood! On September 26 at 6 in the evening, we will be painting door signs with Denise Watkins and Shandell Fouts at the Loring Church fellowship room. C...
