    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Sep 16, 2020

Sympathy to victims of fires in California, Oregon, Montana and everywhere else. Again, happy birthday to all September birthdays. Last week, Jeanie G., Patty Y., and I attended volleyball games at Malta High School. Congratulations to the junior high penguins including Sommer Green of the Lady Mavericks. On Friday, my friend Irene Wendalyn of Chinook came to Whitewater and we had lunch and on Saturday traveled to Saco for Saco Fun Days. We saw the parade and I knew some of the riders in the...

  • Only 33.7-percent of PC Census in

    Sep 16, 2020

Dear neighbors, As a longtime advocate for economic development in Phillips County, there is a pressing topic that I would like to visit about with you, one which is often out of sight and out of mind compared to other priorities: the 2020 Census. I am concerned because only 33.7 percent of Phillips County households have responded to the Census as of September 4th. That is the seventh-to-worst response rate of any county in Montana, placing us as the 50th lowest response rate out of 56 counties. Our county has a lot at stake during this...

  • I have been waiting

    Parker Heinlein|Sep 16, 2020

The sun had yet to crest the Larb Hills when I let Ace out of the truck. He hit the ground running , and like he always does, raced 50 yards down the road before turning back to join me for the hunt. It takes him some time to settle down and he leapt and barked for a couple minutes until he got all the nonsense out of system and went to work, nose glued to the ground. Walking through the snowberries bordering the creek, I saw his tail become a blur of anticipation. A second later the morning...

  • Let's talk seasoning

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 16, 2020

I can’t think of anything else to talk about, so let’s talk seasoning. The earliest memory of seasoning meat was when I saw my parents seasoning chicken quarters that they would oven roast. They would use Lawry’s Seasoning and other basic seasonings including garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. I probably forgot something but that is how I remember it. I remember them using a base of Lawry’s for almost every protein that we ate. When I went to college, I wanted to try something differ...

  • Whitewater News & Opinion for September 9, 2020

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Sep 9, 2020

Sympathy to victims of hurricanes, riots and that Corona 19 virus. Get well to all sick with the virus, especially those in Phillips County and in Montana. Three grandchildren of Monica Taylor's visited in Whiewater. Monica took them to Virginia and then came back home to Whiewater. Whiewater school is having regular classes. They are all wearing masks, most with Whiewater Penguins pictures or other pictures. Whiewater Lutheran Church has resumed regular Sunday service at 11:15 a.m. All are welc...

  • He still wags his tail

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 9, 2020

My dog Jem turned 14 this week. He’s the last of my dogs that became acquainted with my father, who passed away nearly 14 years ago. Now the old dog is starting to act like the old man at the end. He moans and groans a lot, sleeps all the time, but always wakes up hungry. He demands to be fed, watered, let in, let out. He voices his unsolicited opinion on everything. However, there’s a big difference between old man and old dog. I never considered having the old man put down. I may have tho...

  • People need entertainment

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 9, 2020

It has been a weird year for everyone. I typically roll with the punches, so wearing a mask doesn’t affect me. I just try to be fun with it and hope that it keeps someone safe. Whatever. Not a big deal to me. The mass hysteria of COVID-19 makes me uneasy because I don’t even want to catch a simple cold, let alone something that could be worse, but again, I roll with the flow. The racial tension is unnerving to me, but I have lived life knowing that there are possibly people that at the wor...

  • And Various Other Things

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 9, 2020

Who Are We Right Now? Last week, I talked about how the paper should be a reflection of our past, present, and future. I’ve been thinking about how much things have changed here just in the last 15 years. As I was looking up population facts, it occurred to me that I still hadn’t filled out my census. Not only do we need to take the time to fill out the census so we can track our population, but Montana also relies on an accurate Census to provide critical funding for schools, health care, and highways, and it determines the state’s share...

  • Whitewater News & Opinion for September 2, 2020

    Sep 2, 2020

The birds were really gathering and now there doesn't seem to be so many around so they must have moved south. This has been such fall weather lately----first roasting us out, then cold. The nights have been really cold but not quite frost yet--it's coming though. Some of the smoke and haze from the fires have finally reached here--some said it is noticeable on the highway in the morning. High winds and rain in the southern part of the state have helped to move it out. This last week has seen the temps in the 90+ region again. I think I would r...

  • The two seasons

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 2, 2020

My life revolves around two seasons: hunting season and not-hunting season. Not-hunting season is almost over. From Sept. 1 through New Year’s I spend more days hunting than not. It’s what I do. During not-hunting season I fish a bit, grow a garden, and pound a few nails to impress my wife. But mostly I count the days until hunting season. If hibernation were an option I’d consider it. Go to sleep at the end of hunting season and wake up when it starts again. Just sleep through not-h...

  • Whitesox not disappointing for a change

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 2, 2020

As many that follow Major League Baseball know, there are only 60 regular-season games in 2020 due to the threat of COVID-19. I am a White Sox fan. And last week was a great week for the team. As of Monday, August 31, the White Sox were in first place in the AL Central. On Tuesday, August 25, Lucas Giolito had thrown one of the greatest no-hit games in MLB history. And on Sunday, August 30, rookie Luis Robert hit a walk-off three-run homer, which put the Sox in first place. I haven’t had a c...

  • Don't forget what you already know

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Sep 2, 2020

Hi, I’m Krista. I have been struggling with a way to start this column without introducing myself because you already know me, and if you don’t, you will read enough Grandpa Swede anecdotes in the coming weeks to figure me out soon enough. But I really don’t want to talk about me, I want to talk about us. I want to talk about who we are as a community, and who we have been, who we want to be. More than that, I want to tell you who we want to be as your newspaper. The first day that I met with Mark and Pierre we talked about how a paper is ba...

  • Whitewater News & Opinion for August 26, 2020

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Aug 26, 2020

Happy birthday to Sally Austin, Chalise Hoff, and Mitchell Moore. Did you watch the Democratic Convention? It was great — Michelle Obama’s speech was awesome. OF course, Joe Biden was fantastic! Make sure to vote in the 2020 election. Here in Whitewater, school has started. It is different as they are all wearing masks and practicing so-cial distancing due to the COVID-19 virus. Good luck to all students, teachers, and staff. Yesterday, Janet Dunbar (census taker) stopped by my house, but I had...

  • License plate discrimination

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 26, 2020

During a trip to Cooke City last week I was asked about my license plate. “Where’s 11?” the woman who brought my barbecue sandwich wanted to know. “Phillips County,” I replied. She said nothing, just gave me look. I didn’t think anything of it until I got home and told my friend Dave. “She probably thought you were diseased,” he said. Phillips County, which had skated through the pandemic unscathed, with zero cases of covid until it blew up a couple of weeks ago, now tallies 90 some odd cases....

  • Social Media is a cesspool

    Pierre Bibbs|Aug 26, 2020

There are times that I wish we could all unplug. What I mean is unplug from technology and media. What would a world like that even look like? I am lucky to remember times without Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and other social media apps. My kids won’t have that luxury. Instead, whenever they get a smart device, they will be ex-posed to so many things that I am just praying that it doesn’t ruin them. I have been taught that what comes out of your mouth is from the overflow of the heart. This is...

  • Maybe I agree with 45?

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Aug 26, 2020

Well, if I am not going to see it, maybe I am okay with no longer paying it. US President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders recently to provide temporary relief to Americans who are dealing with the economic-impact felt during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. One of those orders was to instructs employers to defer certain payroll taxes for the rest of the year for people who earn less than $100,000 annually. On August 8, President Trump said he intended “terminate the tax” referring to Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes. “It...

The presidential election is just weeks away! Are you registered to vote? You can find out if you are registered to vote in Montana online by visiting app.mt.gov/voterinfo, clicking start, and entering your name and date of birth. Beware in Phillips County because the COVID-19 virus is in our community. You know the precautions as that is all you hear about on TV and radio. The important thing is to not panic, just hope and pray that this will all be over soon. There have been many horrible...

  • And I'll do it again

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 19, 2020

When I was young and full of myself there were a number of things I did that I swore I’d never quit. They were too cool, too unique, too fun. I couldn’t imagine a spring without horn hunting or a fall without chasing elk. I promised myself I’d drive over the Beartooth Pass every summer, and I’d never miss the Mothers’ Day caddis hatch on the Yellowstone River. Time has a way of breaking promises, however, and that list of things I’d never quit has dwindled to a scant few. One of them is com...

  • I felt that

    Aug 19, 2020

I don’t do sappy TV Shows and movies. I am not one that needs a chick flick to open my emotions. But, every once in a while, a film does make me tear up. The first time that I noticed this was while watching A Walk to Remember. I try no to spoil things, but if you recall there was a certain tragedy in that film that set my waterworks off. Years later, I watched Man of Steel. You may think, what could make a person cry during in a Superman movie? This is a slight spoiler but during Clark Kent’s childhood, he was just understanding his pow...

  • Whitewater News & Opinion for August 12, 2020

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Aug 12, 2020

Get well wishes traveling prize was awarded to my sister, Janet Brown. She is out of the hospital and, for now, in assisted living. Happy birthday to Fred Allery Sr., and Fred Allery Jr. Also, happy birthday to my son Mitchell Moore and Irene Wendalyn of Chinook. Irene and I went to the Phillips County Fair Friday. We ate supper and went to the night concert that night and it was excellent Country music. Although the exhibits were down in number, congratulations to the 4-H children. What I miss...

  • Solving the Montana stockwater rights problem

    Aug 12, 2020

The Water Use Act (Act), passed by the Montana Legislature in 1973, mainly dealt with free flowing streams, irrigation and ground water. It did not address livestock water use. So why is this an issue? Irrigation from free flowing streams requires a specific point of diversion and a specific place of use. Priority dates and the amount of water allocated to a user become important when drought conditions reduce the amount of water in the stream. Similarly, ground water can become an issue when subdivision withdrawals start impacting the water...

  • I'm a newspaper guy

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 12, 2020

I was talking to my good friend Edub last week about folks we used to work with at the Bozeman Chronicle who had gone on to work for larger newspapers. We laughed about a rookie reporter at the paper who had struggled with the writing, couldn’t meet deadlines, and left after less than a year. Edub said he thought the guy was still working for the Boston Globe. Then he looked at me with a grin on his face and said: “And you’re working for the Phillips County News.” It’s true. My journalism career...

  • Sometimes simplicity is needed

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 12, 2020

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you matter. I had the privilege of having my cousin, his wife, and their son, over for their vacation; this also doubled as a stay-cation for Susan, myself, and the boys. When they asked me months ago if they could come through for their vacation, I was like, “are you sure?!?” People from the outside world don’t know how rural we are here in Phillips County. I tried explaining that there was almost nothing to do here. I explained that the closest taco pl...

  • Things my mother taught me

    Eunice Robinson|Aug 5, 2020

    1. My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE. "If you're going to kill each other, do it outside...I just finished cleaning.” 2. My mother taught me RELIGION "You better pray that will come out of the carpet.” 3. My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL "If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week.” 4. My mother taught me LOGIC "Because I said so, that's why.” 5. My mother taught me MORE LOGIC "If you fall out of that swing and break you neck, you are not going to the store with me.” 6. My mother ta...
