The Dodson FFA Chapter recently traveled to Bozeman for the annual John Deere Ag Expo. Representing Dodson were Kataya Kill Eagle, Sebastian Best, Junior Stiffarm, Mason Lonebear, Lilyian Turnsplenty. The chapter competed in Meats Evaluation and Livestock Judging. Elim Lutheran Brethren Elementary and Jr. High students packed 55 shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child this week. Phillips County gained a new employee with the addition of Crystal Klein as the new Librarian. She was selected from applicants upon the retirement of Janeen Brookie, who retired after 28 years as the County Librarian. Crystal started on November 6th and joins Michelle Mitchell, part-time aide at the library. Although not a new face in the community, Crystal is relatively new to many. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, a lot of poultry was raised for sale in Phillips County. In 1931, 39,543 pounds of turkeys, ducks, geese and chicken were shipped through the Phillips County Turkey Pool. Fifty-six growers sold through the Pool that year. In December 1932, nearly 20,000 pounds of dressed turkeys were shipped from Malta to eastern markets for the Christmas season. Mahan, of Malta, and a Nevada man were convicted and sentenced on hunting-related charges in Phillips County Justice Court. Mahan, who had previously lost his hunting privileges for life, paid $6,310 and was sentenced to 180 days in jail, which he served under house arrest. In early March 1920, Malta found out it would be on the new transcontinental highway that was being planned across the northern U.S. It started at Portland, Maine and crossed the extreme southern part of Ontario, north of Lake Erie. From Grand Forks, North Dakota westward the highway closely followed the Great Northern Railway. The highway was completed in a piecemeal fashion.
