Last week I introduced you to Snakehead Gilbert and this week we meet another “character” that lived in Phillips County. Dum Dum Bill was the nickname that stuck to him. Dum Dum Bill lived in Landusky during the early days. He was known as a quiet and intellectual character with a lovable disposition. So lovable that it was reported, “He always shot to kill to avoid unnecessary pain and distress!” Now Dum Dum Bill did not allow his intellectual abilities to interfere with his mining town life. In fact, he used it while playing poker – makin...

We have had three nice rain storms, keeping the ground wet and the air quite cool. Grass and everything are growing and has needed mowing often. There are a lot of birds around and it is fun to watch them pull the worms out of the wet soil. Jerry Lankford said they had over an inch of rain at the farm. Jerry's crew has been working on Ava Welch's yard and has taken out most of the old dead brush and most of the trees which were also dead. Ava will have a clear coast now to work with. We often take physical indpendence for granted because shopping, attending events, and interacting with others offers at least a basic level of regular movement. Isolating at home poses a hidden danger of losing physical independence due to a lack of physical activity. Consider what movements you would do on a normal day - get into and out of a car, walk, lift and carry groceries, and interact with others. Two questions can reveal your risk. 1. Do you have "reserves" of strength, mobility, & endurance? 2. Are you replacing your usual activity w...
