There have been quite a few changes to FWP law enforcement staff here in the last few months, but the public will still see many familiar faces. The changes began when Ron Howell, who had a been the warden captain at the regional headquarters in Glasgow for four years, accepted a position in Helena as the assistant chief of enforcement. Shane Reno, who had been the FWP Region 6 warden sergeant for 13 years and a field warden for 15 years before that, then stepped into the role of captain and will be based in Havre. Reno is originally from...
Winds up to nearly 90 miles per hour, hail, heavy rain, and even a small tornado in Dodson ripped through Phillips County last week, knocking over trees, ripping shingles off roofs, and leaving many without power for over 24 hours last Tuesday evening. Shortly after the power went out in Malta, sirens went off as two Phillips County Ambulance Service vehicles, a Phillips County Sheriff's deputy and members of the Phillips County Volunteer Fire Department headed to Dodson where a 5th-wheel...

In their final meeting of June, the Malta City Council heard about mosquitoes, the Municipal Pool being readied for the swimming season, and that literal tons of trash and junk were hauled away from residences during the City’s Clean-up Days. Malta City Public Works Director Jim Truelove said that over 40 loads — both on pull-trailers and dump trucks — were hauled away from homes in the city and to the dump, totaling approximately 15-to-20 tons. “It really helped clean up the community and people got rid of a lot of unwanted items,” Director Tr...
Whitefish is the busiest stop in Montana for Amtrak's daily Empire Builder passenger train, which runs between Chicago and Portland or Seattle. The more than 55,000 people who board or disembark the train in Whitefish every year account for nearly half the line's Montana ridership. So when news arrived a few weeks ago that Amtrak will reduce service from daily to just three days a week in response to declining ridership due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was yet another blow for a town that...
The Montana Nurses Association (MNA) strongly encourages all Montana citizens to wear facemasks to help limit the spread of the coronavirus. As COVID-19 spreads across the globe and cases continue to increase in Montana, the chances that you will be exposed and get sick continue to increase. When someone talks, coughs or sneezes they may release droplets into the air that land on surfaces and can infect others. If someone is ill or is an asymptomatic carrier, a face mask can reduce the number of germs that the wearer releases and can protect ot...
Surprises walk through our front door every week. This week’s surprise item was an Ingram’s Milkweed Cream jar. It was found by Ian Simanton. Curious about milkweed's facial cream properties started me on a fascinating journey. I was amazed at what I found. Milkweed floss (white stringy fibers attached to the seeds) has been used for many items. Settlers used the floss for stuffing pillows and quilts. Travelers often used it as a tinder for fires. And by far the most important practice was during WWII when it was used to stuff life jackets whe...

Congressman Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) today urged Amtrak’s president and CEO to reconsider cuts in service along the Hi-Line. “Reliable access to rail service is important for communities along the Hi-Line,” Gianforte wrote in a letter to Flynn. “Not only is passenger rail an economic driver for the state, it is also an affordable travel alternative. Reduced service threatens the connectivity of Montana’s rural communities.” On June 17, Amtrak officials announced Amtrak will reduce service from seven days to three for the Empire Builder, wh...
Please be advised: If you are planning on using Trafton Park shelters for an event in the future, please contact the Malta City Office, 654-1251, to reserve the shelters, get the key and pay for the electricity. The Phillips Co Sheriff’s Office will no longer be handling this. Thank you. Please remember to file a new burn permit for the 2020 year. If you plan on doing any burning in 2020, please file one BEFORE you start to burn. These permits are good for all of 2020 and you only have to file one a year, not every time you burn. All 2019 p...
Montana State University Extension educators say it is important for people to understand how titling personal property that is owned in joint tenancy with right of survivorship could have unintended consequences. MSU Extension family economics specialist Marsha Goetting and Pondera County Extension agent Wendy Wedum said factors like property title laws and intestacy statutes can impact how property is distributed after a person dies. Joint tenancy with right of survivorship, according to Montana law, takes priority over a written will....
On Tuesday, a huge storm with very high winds hit our area. It hit so hard that I was worried that my picture window might blow out or break. I'm still thankful for the absence of a hail! The rain came down hard and sideways! One of my neighbors lost most of the shingles on his roof, another lost his barn from the wind. The hay windrows were blown all over the fields. Then the sun came out! Also, as a result of the storm, many power poles were broken and the electricity went off. The crew at Big...

The warehouse across the street the old NAPA building is being taken apart and moved on 1st Street in Malta. I believe Malta Ready Mix is going to put a new building at this location. A week ago, I was riding my bike near the Malta Elementary School, I got to watch Derrick Welch use a machine to start building a driveway to a private residence near the alley. Across the street from the Phillips County Courthouse, Malta Ready Mix poured concrete for a private residence where a driveway was being...

The application, filed on June 22, 2020, and assigned Docket 2020.06.076, will be subject to the Montana Public Service Commission’s review and approval process. Phillips County Health Department and the Phillips County Hospital and Family Health Clinic are partnering to offer free, drive-through COVID-19 testing on Thursday, July 9 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Milk River Pavilion parking lot. A doctor's order is not required to participate, and the event is part of broader testing of asymptomatic people statewide to prevent community spread of the disease. The test is a molecular test, so unlike an antibody test, it will not tell if the person has had the virus previously, but will tell if the...
