Did you know that the Whitewater townsite wasn’t always where it is today? Whitewater was originally located at what is now called Forks. One building from Old Whitewater remains standing. That is the Forks Hall which was built in 1916. The Hall was built by the community when they saw a need for a gathering place to hold events. The original hall had a stage for plays and orchestras. The stage was removed so a small apartment could be made to provide housing for U.S. Immigration and Customs employees who were stationed at Whitewater. A m...

The winds came in such power and velocity, that all that was left, where the grandstand had been, was a slab of cement and memories. Bleachers were brought in from the drag strip in Malta, and have been in place since. This is the last year for the makeshift seating. Even though the County had insurance on the...

Hoping the summer is treating you all well. I took a trip to Malta (a couple of weeks ago) with a couple of constituents and colleagues. It was a great opportunity to get acquainted with the new Senate District 14 I will be representing starting 1 January 2025. You may recall, Montana was recently redistricted, which drew new political boundaries for congressional and legislative districts. I’m trying to familiarize myself with where the district lines are in the real world, not just on a map. East of Havre, I know the district includes all o...

According to newspaper accounts, there were more individual vegetable entries than ever before, and quality was 100% better. The livestock entries were up from previous years. So much poultry was exhibited that extra pens had to be made to accommodate it. The Malta Band and the Boy Scout Band from Chinook provided music throughout the fair. Looss Carnival Company was on the grounds for three days. Lucille and Willie, a comedy sketch act p...
