1 years ago- Wednesday, July 6, 2011 Camper Fire Closes Highway Firefighters from the Malta Volunteer Fire Department work to extinguish a camper fire on Hwy. 2, west of the Malta Airport, at noon last Saturday. The fire closed traffic in both directions for approximately an hour. One incident truck and a tanker, along with six firefighters responded in addition to a Sheriff’s deputy and a Montana Highway Patrol trooper. Blister beetles have been confirmed in Phillips County. The beetles have many colors, but the same shape. They can be found with stripes, black and gray (see photo). The beetles get their name by exuding a toxic substance called cantharidin. It causes irritations to your hands if you crush one. During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 22, the Malta City Council gave the go-ahead to put in motion the acquisition of the old National Guard Armory with a unanimous vote. Mayor Demarais told the council that there is ARPA money, or "Covid money" that will be available to the city for the purchase of buildings that can become the new city emergency building if and when it would be needed. On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at 1411 hours, Phillips County Sheriff's Office dispatch received a report of an aircraft upside down on the Bowdoin Wildlife Refuge. Sheriff's Office personnel, EMS personnel, and fire personnel were dispatched to the location of the crash. Phillips County EMS Coordinator Rhei Tharp handed out a few plaques this past week to three well-deserving Malta residents. American Legion Riders Chapter 4, Dog Tag Buddies, and Tenacious Dames Riding Club teamed up to spread awareness about suicide in Montana. The Ride for Tomorrow, adding miles to the conversation, was held on Saturday, June 19. It consisted of an Iron Butt challenge and many other summer solstice routes that bikers could ride.
